Try and Stop Me
-By BENNETT CERF-
SHEPHERD MEAD has these words of wisdom for brand
new fathers (you'll find said words in his book: "How to
Succeed with Women Without Really Trying"); "What a
different place your U
bouse will be when the
new little one comes
home from the hospital!
Lose no time: get ao
quainted. You must learn
to know your baby, and
the sooner the better. You
will find there Is a Gold-
en Time: a ten-minute
period following each
bath during which your
baby will smell fresh and
clean. Take advantage of .
this. Dandle him, both
on the knee and free
hand. A little dandling
will go a long way. ' ''

know you!" .

Study of Virus
In Chickens Upped
Washington - (Science
Service) A virus-caused can
cerous disease of chickens is
coming in for some intensive
study with the awarding of a
$100,000 research grant, the
U. S. Department of Agricul
ture announced here.
Funds from the grant, made
by the American Cancer So
ciety, will be used to step up
research on three main types
of avian leukosis, as the dis
ease is called. Scientists at
the USDA's Regional Poultry
Research Laboratory in East
Lansing, Mich., have already
shown that this poultry can
cer is caused by a virus. They
have transmitted the-virus to
other chicks and have immu
nized chicks against the dis
ease. Poultry cancers cannot be
transmitted to humans but it
is expected that research re
sults can be applied to human
cancer studies.
Dr. Ben R. Burmester,
USDA biologist, will direct
the research program which
will now include a larger
staff. Study of visceral lym
phomatosis, or "big liver" disease-one
of poultry's biggest
killers-will be emphasized. It
is one of the most difficult of
the avian cancers to detect.
