Otherwise line is unchanged. identical contours and the same 1,740 square inches of surface area. The works of GM's Hydra matic transmis sion have been redesigned to fit into a smaller case, reducing the hump in the front compart ment. Every make but Cadillac now features an engine designed for operation on regular grade gasoline, although power options are available that demand premium. Ford, along with the Edsel which shares a common body shell, claims to be produc ing in 1960 what it originally planned for the following year. The all-new styling permits two important improvements: elimination of the annoying "dog leg" underneath the wind shield in the front door- post, and a narrower front fender that enables a mechanic to reach into the engine compartment easily. Mercury stylists have softened the projectile theme, but Lincoln and Thunderbird are continued with little change. - The galaxy of 1960 standard-sized models is indeed sparkling. In any other year the assortment would have been big news by itself but now, of course, it is overshadowed by the compact-car revolution that is only beginning. GM plans to supplement the Corvair with an aluminum V-8-powered small car that will be sold by its Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac divisions. Right on its exhaust will be the compact 1961 Edsel, and Chrysler is tenta tively reserving the DeSoto name plate for another entry in this new class which will wed luxury to compactness. Even the biggest cars will not be sacro sanct. Plans now call for changing Lincoln's Continental model into a superlatively plush Thunderbird-style car. Auto makers, in fact, are just tapping the edge of a market for 'special-purpose vehicles to fill specific needs. Where the model "T" put the American family on wheels, this new era will put each member of the family on his own wheels.
