The six-cylinder engine sits straightforward and erect up front. Components which require periodic service, such as distributor and spark plugs, are visible and accessible even to, the home mechanic. The neatness and simplicity underhood, in fact, invites amateur tinkering of a Saturday afternoon for those so inclined. These, then, are the revolutionary new comers that are out to expand the market opened in recent years by Ramblers, Larks and the legion of imports. Surprisingly, those who formerly had the lush compact field to . themselves don't worry much about the new competition. . . . America's two successful independent pro ducers believe their strength lies in the variety of models and accessories they offer compact car buyers. Rambler has performed major metallic surgery on the exterior of its 108-inch ; wheelbase model and on the slightly larger Ambassador. It still lists the only four-door ' hardtop in the compact field, along with a choice between six- and eight-cylinder engines, air conditioning, reclining seats and a wide variety of trim options, rang ing from austere to luxurious. The company's new three-seat station wagons feature a side hinged door at the rear end for easy entrance. In the smaller American series, a four-door sedan has been added. Studebaker, too, has been busy broadening its line to take advantage of its first year of renewed prosperity. It has high hopes, sales wise, for its trim Lark convertible the only one in its field as well as for a four-door model which rounds out its wagon line. It also has a choice of six- or eight-cylinder engines. Exterior changes in the Lark are hardly dis cernible, a policy followed in the belief that buyers resent "forced obsolescence." Despite the compact-car "revolution," the big car will still dominate the American scene. Family Weekly, October 25, J959 In fact, Detroit has spent record sums on its revisions for 1960. Once again the "face lifts" tend. to be conservative. Chromed geegaws are conspicuously absent in most cases. For individualists, most of the special mod els such as the Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Thunderbird, Studebaker Hawk, and Chrys ler 300 are continued in addition to the Dodge Dart, a new line in" the low-priced field, The dart is a Plymouth-dimensioned car, but with its own styling. It has in common with other Chrysler models the company's new unitized body structure, which is chassis less except for a stub frame protruding in front. This type of construction is exception ally strong and serves as a firm mount for the torsion-bar front suspension. . Dart buyers can; choose engines ranging from the newy inclined six to a powerful V-8 featuring ram-air induction. It works like a supercharger in that the air and fuel mixture is rammed into the engine at the speed of sound when the throttle is opened. Other notable advances on Chrysler-built cars include an optional vacuum device that automatically locks all doors when the engine is started, a switch that will operate all four flashing lights simultaneously for roadside emergencies, and front seats that swivel auto matically wheneveV the door is opened or closed. More expensive Chrysler models offer an "electroluminescent" instrument panel that glows in the dark without light bulbs. General Motors products continue the styl ing themes set in 1959, but the exterior sheet metal is new in most cases. In a design princi ple established last year for manufacturing economy, certain basic body parts, such as the cowl structure, are interchangeable between all models. Considering the many external variations, this may be hard to visu alize, but it can be proved by noting that Cadillac and Chevrolet windshields ha
