More cases of influenza have been reported in Oregon ' already this year than in any previ ous like period.. Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF GET INVITATION Moscow - (UPD - The Soviet news agency Tass today re ported that Premier S. Khru shchev and First Deputy Pre mier Anastas Mikoyan have been invited to visit Indonesia. THE LATE' VP., Alben Barkley, liked to teE of election campaigns in his boyhood days, when no Southern poli tician stood a chance unless he could prove he had been wounded in the "War Be tween the States. One campaign was so spirited that three candidates were conceded an equal v chance right down to the wire. The final rally saw all three on a platform. "Vote for me," urged the first. "I left a leg at Shiloh." "The second boasted of the patch he wore over an eye lost at Vicksburg. The third candidate had himself carried to the . , , podium by a couple of husky henchmen. "Friends,' he thundered, 'T wasn't old enough to fight in that thar war, so I wasn't wounded. But if physical disability is to be considered a criterion for office holding, I can tell you this: I am the doggonedest cow-kicked son-of-a-gun you ever sawl" - ' "I do most of my work sitting down," the late Robert Benehley explained once to a youthful interviewer, "because that where I shine." . ' In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS In Washington - the chair man of the Federal Communi cations Commission, Mr. John C. Doerfer, says in a copy righted interview with a na tional weekly ' magazine that the public should have pa tience with television's grow ing pains, including fixed quiz shows. With just a little pa tience over a period of time, he thinks, many of the un desirable practices will disap pear. He adds: , "It isn't necessary, and per- mmmi Don't Miss BUTTONS . . . What he means by that, one assumes, is that tightening of the regulations might be the toe in the door that would lead to government censor ship. ; . i ' ; .' -.. T ET'S TAKE a sharp - and realistic - look at these quiz shows. How did they get started? What kept them going - and growing? Why - eventually - did they get out of hand? .... rpHEY GOT STARTED like A everything else that is good gets started. Somebody with a bright mind thought up something new and fascinat ing. The public liked them. They dealt with huge sums of money. Everybody - likes to see even SOMEBODY ELSE raking in huge wads of dough. It leads to the thought that MAYBE I MIGHT DO IT and how wonderful that would be. If they hadn't been popular and profitable, be cause they attracted big spon sors - they would have died quickly. WHY DID they get out, of " hand? That too is simple. "If they were to keep on growing,, they had to get bigger and better. As it became harder to find enough, people with 'photo graphic minds, it became nec essary to paint the lily. The actors had to be SCHOOLED. There weren't enough NAT URALS to keep the show go ing in a big way. That led to the juggling of the questions and ahswers-which was done to make the show more excit ing and to keep it going long er. . ' ' ' . ' : - ; N ARRIVING at an accurate judgment of these, affairs, we must remember that they were QUITE different from ( fixed sport events in which somebody is paid to LOE a game or a fight, thus giving the bettors a sure thing. None of that, it appears, entered into the fixing of the shows. That was done to keep up the interest, to keep the audiences growing. In the "fixing" 01 inese auiz shows, however) a fraud was practiced on the public - which thought it was witness ing an amazing exhibition of PURE KNOWLEDGE,. with the most knowledgeable ones carrying off the rewards-both money and glory. The public thought it was seeing an amazing revelation of photographic memory of things that are interesting and important to the k n o w e r thereof. Instead, what - the public was really witnessing amounted to a carefully sta ged puppet show. V Therein lay the deception. WHATEVER d i s credit at- taches to the fixing of the quiz show arises out of the j yen for the quick buck. In I arriving at a judgment as to that, let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
