Raborn told the American Rocket Society Thursday night that at least 40 to 50 test shots are needed before the Polaris missile will be operational. Raborn said he believed the Polaris, a sub marine launched ballistic mis sile, may be the key to dis couraging surprise attacks. Try and By BENNETT CERF- rpwO HORSE THIEVES in the Utah Territory years ago J- were caught by a posse representing law and order and promptly strung up. The gallows was constructed so that the bodies would dangle over Great Salt Lake. The noose loosened on the first prisoner and he went plumeting into the water. As they tied the rope around the neck of the second varmit, he im plored, "Make sure this one's tight, fellers: I can't swim a stroke!" A couple of hoboes were sunning themselves in New York's Bryant Park. One began a ram" bling reminiscence, oblivious of the fact that his companion had fallen fast asleep. "Ah, those were the days of my glory," he recalled. "That dollar to which I just referred, incidentally, was the first dollar I ever earned honestly. AT Contract 5 Validity of Parks Group Questioned By Lane Judge The county judge of Linn county has questioned the validity of the several parks and recreation commissions in western Oregon counties. Before a group of Linn county residents this week the judge said he could find no legal authority for establish ing such a board until forma tion of a parking district in cluding all or part of the county has been approved at a countywide election and then only after such an elec tion has been petitioned by 25 per cent of the voters residing within the proposed district boundaries. In commenting on the Linn county judge's stand, Judge Earl Miller said the Jackson county parks and recreation commission was setup in ac cordance with the one in Marion county. He explained that the coun ty's order for the establishing of the advisory committee was submitted to the district at torney. In the DA's opinion he stated that the county court had the authority for setting up advisory commissions at its own discretion under Oregon statute. The nine members of the county commission receive no compensation except for trav el expenses, stationery and a meeting location. Judge Miller stressed that the group had no authority but acts strictly as an advisory group to the county court. In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS Hmmmmmm. I reckon we'll have to talk about satellites today. We've launched a new one (Explorer VII) and it has some interesting points. For example: Explorer VII, tossed into space from Cape Canaveral, carried an automatic gag to make sure it won't make a beeping nuisance of itself. This thoughtful little jigger is a timer developed by the Bul ova Watch Company for the express purpose of telling the satellite, exactly a year from now, to SHUT UP. THIS morning's dispatches JL tell us that this will please space scientists the world over no end. Th- dispatches add: "If there is anything space scientists hate, it's a satellite that keeps talking LONG AFTER IT HAS ANYTHING NEW TO SAY." 0 ,H, BOY! Wouldn't it be WONDER FUL if the same jigger could be attached to politicians? If that could be done, it might be worth all the money we're spending on space ex ploration. THE reporters go on to tell us that Vanguard I, launch ed on March 17, 1958, may live 1,000 YEARS. They add: "It's yipping little voice, powered by the sun, may last nearly as long. Nobody has any idea how to squelch it. As one scientist says, 'all we can do is to listen AROUND it.' " THERE are, politicians like that. As a matter of fact, one of them comes from out this way. I suppose all we can do is to "listen around him." CONTINUING with this space stuff, one of our B47 jet bombers fired a Bold missile the other day ACROSS THE PATH of our Explorer VI paddle-wheel satellite that is whizzing around somewhere out there in the outer void. It didn't HIT Explorer VI. It didn't even explode an atomic charge. But, presumable it could have done it. The dis patch adds: "The shot could lead to de velopment of air-launched missiles to knock down enemy satellites and maybe enemy missiles." . H OW would it work? Imagine a duck swinging across fast and high. You turn loose at him with a fancy load of shot that cut across his bow and then homes on him-and WHAM! All you have to do after that is to find your duck in the tules. , Ain't science wonderful?
