GIVES POLARIS REPORT

Rear Adm. W. F. Raborn told
the American Rocket Society
Thursday night that at least
40 to 50 test shots are needed
before the Polaris missile will
be operational. Raborn said
he believed the Polaris, a sub
marine launched ballistic mis
sile, may be the key to dis
couraging surprise attacks.

dollar I ever earned honestly. The other, if I remember
correctly, was on June 14, 1952.

Two Injured in
Highway 62 Crash
Two persons were injured
in a two car collision Wednes
day at the intersection of
Crater Lake highway and Del
ta Waters rd., Medford police
said.
Injured were Mary Jane
McGoodwin, 35, and Sara Jane
McGoodwin, 3Ji, both of 1507
East Main st., Medford. Mrs.
McGoodwin was treated for
minor injuries. Her daughter
suffered a bruised right shoul
der and other injuries. They
were taken to Rogue Valley
hospital by Medford Ambu
lance Service, treated and
later released.
The other driver, James
Sorenson, 2985 Crater Lake
highway, was cited by Med
ford police for not having an
operator's license and failure
to yield the right of way to
oncoming traffic.
Sorenson was traveling east
on Crater Lake highway and
had pulled off onto the shoul
der to let traffic pass. He told
officers he made a left turn
onto the highway to enter a
driveway and did not see the
car driven by Mrs. McGood
win until too late.

Validity of Parks
Group Questioned

The county judge of Linn
county has questioned the
validity of the several parks
and recreation commissions in
western Oregon counties.
Before a group of Linn
county residents this week the
judge said he could find no
legal authority for establish
ing such a board until forma
tion of a parking district in
cluding all or part of the
county has been approved at
a countywide election and
then only after such an elec
tion has been petitioned by 25
per cent of the voters residing
within the proposed district
boundaries.
In commenting on the Linn
county judge's stand, Judge
Earl Miller said the Jackson
county parks and recreation
commission was setup in ac
cordance with the one in
Marion county.
He explained that the coun
ty's order for the establishing
of the advisory committee was
submitted to the district at
torney. In the DA's opinion
he stated that the county court
had the authority for setting
up advisory commissions at its
own discretion under Oregon
statute.
The nine members of the
county commission receive no
compensation except for trav
el expenses, stationery and a
meeting location. Judge Miller
stressed that the group had no
authority but acts strictly as
an advisory group to the
county court.

VI paddle-wheel satellite that
is whizzing around somewhere
out there in the outer void. It
didn't HIT Explorer VI. It
didn't even explode an atomic
charge. But, presumable it
could have done it. The dis
patch adds:
"The shot could lead to de
velopment of air-launched
missiles to knock down enemy
satellites and maybe enemy
missiles." .
