Bacteria Will Be
'Test Animal' in
College Research

ly thought of as an enemy of
man, will be used as a "test
animal" for man's benefit in
basic research on cell behav
ior at Oregon State college.
Special bacteria are the
"guinea pigs" in the study be
cause their cell chemistry is
similar to that of man and
animals and because some re
search results can be checked
out in a matter of hours or
days. With small test animals,
it may take weeks or months
and research costs are also
greater.
The research centers around
investigations of normal cell
behavior, including how the
cells get energy and what
they do with it. Long-range
objective is to uncover in
formation that may be useful
in treating diseases that upset
cell behavior and growth.

Cheldelin said.

be supported by grants, from
the National Institute of
Health. Grants of $22,900
have been approved each
v year for the study, or a com
bined project total of $114,-
500. .
In addition to Cheldelin,
staff members working on the
project are Dr. Tsoo E- King
and Dr. Annette S. Baich.
