Try and Stop Me -By BENNETT CERF- ACHAP NAMED Charlie took an active part in just about everything that was going on in his pleasant little home town except church services. Try as she would, his wife just couldn't seem ! : , to talk him into attend ing services on Sunday morning. One Sunday, however, , she broke down his re sistance, and even per suaded him to greet peo ple at the door. He hailed almost everybody by heir first name, until the shurch was filled and the tervices about to begin. ,. At the last moment, a straggler appeared. Charlie shook his hand, told him how glad he was to see him in church, and expressed the hope he'd be back the following Sunday. ' Til be back, all right," the straggler assured him cheer fully, then walked down the aisle and up into the pulpit to start-the services. ' ' . Freda Karlitz reports a tense moment in a fourth-grade qtris contest. The teacher asked, "Who said God' in his Heaven, Un's right with the world?'" One kid answerrd, "Mrs. God." In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS Bird's-eye view of the news of the world on the day this is written: In the U.S.A., a list of strikes not yet settled. Until they are settled, the U.S. econ omy will tend to stand still, or even decline. In Britain, a national elec tion that will indicate wheth er the British people want the Labor or Conservative party in power. . In Iraq, a would-be assas sin takes a pot shot at Pre mier Kassem, but misses a vital spot. Nobody yet knows what's back of it all. And, of course, there's the world series, which in popu lar interest probably out : weighs them all. As this is written, it isn't settled. SO- ' While the news pot boils Let's take a look at the economy of Oregon, as it 1 is affected by future contracts for building construction. A BRKAKDOWN of con tracts by the major con . struction categories in August of this year, compared with August of last year, shows son - residential construction down 15 per cent: heavy en gineering down 27 per cent; residential UP 34 per cent. . The same trend is shown by the figures for the eight months of 1959. For this per iod, non-residential construc tion is down 41 per cent; heavy engineering : construc tion is down 8 per cent and residential construction is UP 25 per cent. - ' WHAT does it mean? , ; " The answer is rather simple. f ! v ' It means that in Oregon the trend of construction of the types that end to PROVIDE MORE JOBS is downward, while the trend of the type of construction that tends to pro vide more housing for PEO PLE WHO WILL NEED JOBS is sharply upward. That's about the long and the short of it. ALL of this brings us around to -Oregon's No. 1 prob-lem-which is to provide more jobs for Oregon's increasing population. !- If that isn't done, Oregon's long range economy will suf fer. What is said here of Ore gon applies in principle to Far Northern California.
