MoAwesten Edges Close To (LonoDsiiana State's Head New York-dTD - Northwest ern, vito over Iowa in one of Saturday's top football games, cut Louisiana State's first-place margin to six points today in United Press International's major college ratings. The wave of, weekend up sets jilted Army, Clemson, Notre Dame and Ohio State out , of the top 10. Georgia Tech, - Tennessee . and Purdue moved into the select group. Louisiana State, rolling be hind a defense which has al lowed only three points in three games, received 23 first place votes and a total of 317 points from the 35 coaches who rate the teams for UPI. Northwestern, runnerup' for the second straight week, closed in on L.S.U. when it received six first-place votes and 311 points. Southern California advanc ed from sixth to third and Texas moved from eighth to fourth. Georgia Tech advanc ed from 12th to fifth, Ten nessee swept from 13th to sixth and Purdue moved from 19th to eighth. Mississippi was seventh. ' Wisconsin remained ninth and Iowa slipped from third to 10th. ' Army, fourth , last week, failed to receive a vote among the 24 schools mentioned on this week's ballots. Clemson, seventh last week, and Notre Dame and Ohio State, tied for 10th, suffered the same fate. Army lost to Illinois, 20-14; Clemson bowed to Georgia Tech, 16-6; Purdue whipped Notre Dame, 28-7,' and Ohio State was shut out, 17-0, by Southern California last week end. Syracuse was 11th and Penn State 12th. South Caro lina, Oklahoma, Auburn, Michigan State, Southern Methodist, Florida, Air Force Academy, Duke and Oregon rounded out the first 20 in that order.- Arkansas, Texas Tech, Washington and Mis souri were the other teams mentioned on the ballots. JV Romps To 27-7 Win Medford Junior Varsity foot ball team romped to a 27 to 7 victory over Grants Pass junior Varsity team in a game Monday evening at Grants Pass. - Mike McCullough ran 60 yards for Medford's first TD in the first quarter for a lead of 6 points after the kick for the extra point failed. Bob Ellyn's 55-yard pass connect ed with Grants Pass' Fritz Debo to score. The extra point attempt was good, putting Grants Pass ahead in the sec ond quarter. Sam Knutson ran 10 yards for Medford's second touch down and McCullough ran the extra point for the halftime score of 13-7. Following a scoreless third quarter, Medford's George Clearwater and Dan Coghill ran for the two additional touchdowns in the fourth with extra points run by McCul lough and Ron Gandee. : ' Junior varsity teams also playing Monday evening were Ashland and Crater in Ash land. Ashland held Crater scoreless on the Ashland field with the home team scoring in the. first, third and fourth quarters to win 20 to 0. Two Mining Claims Reported Nullified Two placer claims on the Little Applegate river have been officially, nullified, the Jackson county recorder's of fice has been informed. Undecided Vote Being Sought in British Campaign London - (UPD - Both major contenders in Britain's neck-and-neck campaign sought to day to woo the undecided vot ers who will hold the balance of power in Thursday's parli amentary election. A poll published by the lib eral News Chronicle showed the Conservatives and Labor ites tied, with 37.5 per cent each of the voters who have made up their minds. V The pollsters found that 20.5 per . cent of the people they talked to don't know how they'll vote, a 2 per cent increase in a week. The findings of other polls differed in detail-the Conserv ative Daily Express, for ex ample, showed the Conserva tives leading the Laborites 43 per cent to 40-but there was a general agreement that the number of undecided voters is increasing. Pilch Made Laborite Leader Hugh Gait skell v made a pitch for the "don't know" vote in an ad dress Monday night, and Prime Minister Harold Mac millan is expected to do the same tonight. Despite White House' deni als, Macmillan repeated Mon day that "the way is open" for an East-West summit meet ing. He said he will "keep up the pressure" for such a con ference to be held "as soon as practicable." The prime minister said es sential agreement has been reached oh every feature of a summit conference except the time, the place and East-West leaders who will attend. Fuel Blows Up Kenvil, N. J.-(UPD-One thou sand pounds of high-powered rocket fuel exploded at a dy namite factory late Monday killing two men, injuring three others and destroying three buildings. The explosion at Hercules Powder . Co., which makes dy namite and rocket propellent for the government, touched off a fire and second explo sion in nearby buildings. State police said the blasts destroy ed a mixing plant and two storage sheds. ' This wasn't exactly cheery Portland Man Gives Up To Police Portland - (UPD - A Portland man sought by police since last Thursday's gunshot wounding of a narcotics fig ure turned himself in at po lice headquarters here. The man, Charles Edwin Redd, 47, was charged with assault with intent to kill and bond was set at $5,000. - The shooting and beating victim, Ernest Duke Arnold, 37, Portland,; remained in a Portland hospital. He is await ing trial in San Francisco on an indictment linking him with a widespread dope ring. Officers said Redd admit ted being in a car with Ar nold when the incident oc curred but denied shooting or beating Arnold. Nyssa Voters Pass Sewer Bond Proposal Nyssa, Ore.-(UPD-A $178,000 sewer bond proposal received a' 7-1 favorable vote from Nyssa residents in ah election held Monday. The final vote was 181 for and 25 against. Right close to Dick Bass." - Arrest of Boy Clears Recent Burglaries A 17-year-old Gold Hill boy was lodged in the county jail Monday by state police for the burglary of the James Bunke. Birdsong residence in Gold Hill Saturday evening, state police reported. Police said that the boy had the guns in his possession at the time of his arrest. Report ed taken were two rifles, a shotgun and a .22-caliber au tomatic pistol. Police reported they are still investigating the inci dent. The arrest of the youth also cleared a burglary at Gold Hill service station, police said. The other incident, dur ing which nothing was report ed stolen, also occurred Satur day. His one-run time was a disappointing 325 mph, far below even the American land speed record he set here last month of 362 mph. Whether or not he breaks Carbo Trial Resumes Today New York (UPD Under world boxing czar Frankie Carbo's trial on charges of op erating as an unlicensed fight manager resumes . in Manhat tan's general sessions court today. The trial opened Monday in what Carbo and his attorney, Abraham Brodsky, thought would be a routine appear ance. But before the day was out, the dapper Carbo wound up in jail with a million dollar federal tax suit to think about and Brodsky wound up in a heated debate with Judge John S. Mullen. Brodsky sought to gain a postponement because he is scheduled to take part in a murder trial in Brooklyn on Oct. 19. He told Mullen he was under the impression that Monday's appearance wa s only to set a date for Carbo's trial.
