Odd-Ball Offenses Set Unusual Grid Problems San Francisco-(UPD-The lit tle matter of odd-ball offenses is sending defensive-minded coaches out of their minds this year on the intercollegi at gridirons. Efficiency of Grid Officials Noted by Coach By PAUL DIETZEL Htad Coach Louisiana Stat University (Written for UPI) Baton Rogue, La. - (DPH - Kill the "umpire! : How many times have we heard that cry? Saturday afternoon in Shreveport that feeling enter ed my thinking late in our game against Baylor. We had just accomplished a rather spectacular play good for a touchdown, only to no tice back up the field that an official had dropped a red flag. Inasmuch as the offic ial was from the Southwest conference, of which Baylor is a member, some real skull duggery had apparently just been accomplished. The play was a fine screen pass to our right halfback Johnny Robinson, who behind a. fine wave of blockers had traveled down to the 15-yard line and then lateralled to our right table, Bo Strange, who raced into the end zone for a score. The natural reaction was that the officials were trying to "hold down the score" and the . partisan crowd reacted with a chorus of "boos". But after carefully scrutinizing our game movies, we found that that official was right. Actually, we examined the pictures on each penalty and we had lots of them, and found that for some unknown reason, we deserved every one of them. Frankly, we have been able to prove by our movies that we earn nearly every penalty we receive. After having the opportun ity to meet and become ac quainted with many officials throughout our section of the country, it has been a real pleasure to see how really efficient our officials are. Strontium Removal From Milk Planned Washington (UPD Govern ment scientists ann ounced plans today to develop meth ods of using in dairy plants a newly discovered process for removing deadly radioactive strontium-90 from milk. ? Agriculture D ep a r t ment spokesmen emphasized that the levels of radioactive fall out from past atomis tests "do not justify action to decontam inate milk supplies." But, officials said, the new research Droiect would rro- vide "Dractical answers to problems that might arise" if nuclear fallout increased, in the future. 1 V, - 1 third world series .game, "I don't know what I'm go ing to do against Washington Saturday," Cactus Jack Cur tice, Stanford coach, said to day. "I've had my top scout, Dutch Fehring, following them and he tells me that so far they have used 14 dif ferent varieties of offenses." Variety In Attack But the Huskies aren't the only club with the multiple offense. "We have been using be tween six and seven types of offenses," says coach Len Casanova of Oregon. They all must be good be cause the Webfoots are un beaten this year with vic tories over Stanford, Utah and Washington State. But hear the sad story of Joe Verducci, San Francisco State coach with a 3-0 record this year. "Occidental shows a spread of 15 yards on each side of the center. On the right are four linemen; on the left two linemen the guards being more than 30 yards apart. "Then it shows two backs behind the four linemen; and two more backs behind the other two linemen on the left side. "On top of that, nine yards back of the center, is another back. "The way I figure this all out is that Occidental has been playing 12 men all year but the opposition is so con fused with players spread all over the field that no one has noticed it yet." It used to be the single wing and-or the T-formation. But now you can take your choice: single wing, double wing, multiple wing, T-formation, Split-T, spread forma tion, etc. As a matter of fact, it has got to the place where a coach can't even have good night mares any more. He's too con fused to dream. Auto Accidents Reported to Police Two automobile accidents were reported to state police Monday afternoon and eve ning, .i At 4:45 p.m. two vehicles collided on Highway 99 four miles south of Medford. Ac cording, to police an automo bile, operated by Daisy Vic toria Miller, 82, of route 1, box 294, Talent, was traveling south when it turned into the northbound lane apparently intending to head north. Her vehicle struck one operated by Don Dick Hickey, 33, of 791 Cherry st." Police informed Daisy Mil ler hat a complaint would be signed against her for failing to drive on the right side of the highway. Later Monday a vehicle dri ven by Ervin Henry Wellard ing, 49, of 1404 East Main st. struck a steer on Highway 99 north of Gold Hill. Tuesday, Oct. i, 1959 Dodgers Nab Go Motto From Sox Los Angeles - (UPD - "One to go, go, go" was the twist the Los Angeles Dodgers gave to the White Sox motto, "go, go, go," after taking a 3-1 lead in the World Series Mon day. The Dodgers version of "go, go, go" was chalked on a blackboard in the team's dressing room and drew smiles from the players as they trooped wearily to the showers. Needing but one game to win the 1959 world champion ship, the Dodgers were still not boisterous. ' Gil Hodges, the hero of the game with his solo eighth inning hon.er that put the Dodgers out in front, 5-4, took a joshing from his teammates because his mouth was smear ed with lipstick. "That lipstick, is my wife's," he explained sheepishly. ' Roger' Craig Downcast Another center of attrac tion was 24-year-old Larry Sherry, who got credit for his first World Series pitching victory by hurling two score less innings in relief of Dod ger starter Roger Craig. Craig was downcast in the dressing room. You might think he had lost the ball game because of the home run ball he pitched to White Sox catcher Sherm Lollar in the seventh with two men on. "I tried to throw him a slider low and outside," said the lanky pitcher sadly, "but I'm afraid it got over the plate more than I wanted." Manager Walter Alston who would make no predictions about the length of the series but said he hoped the Dodgers did not have to use their plane transportation to Chi cago, said, "I probably went one man too far with Craig. I went out and asked him if he was tired, ha said 'no' so I let him pitch to Lollar." In the White Sox dressing room, Lollar said the home run ball broke inside to him. "There was nothing cheap about that one," he said, "even though it went over the left field screen. I would have been a homer at Comis key Park in Chicago. I'd say our trouble is that we're not running like we did during regular season. These Dodgers are the best running club we've met aside from the Yan kees." Manager Al Lopez would not concede defeat despite the third loss to the Dodgers. "We still have a helluva, chance," he said. "We haven't done it the easy way all year and we might as well figure we won't have it easy the rest of the way." LINESCOEES: (4th game) Chicago (A) 000 000 400 4 10 3 LA. (N) 004 000 Olx 5 9 0 Wynn. It sure beats me. Funny thing, when Gerry Staley was in the National league, I never had too much luck against him. He had good stuff then and I think he has even more now. , That was a real good pitch he threw me in the eighth inning. It was a sinker away from. the' plate and generally those kind .;.e tough to pull. But the moment I hit it I knew it was gone. That ball made a mighty nice sight sail ing into the seats. Waved to Wife Maybe you may have no ticed that I jvrvved to my wife, Joan, as' I trotted around the bases. That's a habit I got into while the club still play ed in Brooklyn. Then, after the game was over, she came down the run way and kissed me as I was going to the clubhouse. She also said something to me but in all that noise and excite ment I couldn't hear exactly what it was. I'd have to say things look pretty good for our nine now, but none of us is getting too cocky. We all remember what happened between the Yan kees and Brav s i- last year's Series. Milwaukee jumped to a three-game to one lead but the -Yankees wound, up as world champs. We don't want that happen ing to us. ' ' I don't think it will.
