Anastasja, president of the International "Longshoremen's association and boss of the Brooklyn docks, - did an about-face and ordered his men to stay on strike. Thursday, in defiance of orders from William Bradley, Anas .tasia had said Brooklyn dock workers would be on the job this, morning. The DuPont decision, due after all markets close, seemed to have less worry for PuPont stock than at first imagined. It gained late in the day. General Motors also took the decision in stride and rose more than a point. Z 75?i 67 'i 57 3i Brooklyn Local Revolt Fails To Materialize New Yprk - DPD Material shortages that could lead, to lay-offs of factory and build ing workers spread today as result of a dock . workers strike that has stopped cargo handling in ports from Maine to Texas. The strike by 85,000 long shoremen on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts was consolidated today with the quelling pf a back to work revolt by Brook Jyn locals of f he Internation al Longshoremen's Union. Construction Threatened A cut in construction work in Florida was threatened by the tie-up of steel and ce ment. Manufacturing in New England began to feel the pinch of raw material short ages. Layoffs of industrial workers were anticipated if the strike continues. The ILA and the New York Shipping Association, representing ports from Maine to Norfolk, Va., met separate ly to map strategy. No joint talks were in sight. Ready To Negotiate "We are ready to negoti ate and I hope a settlement will be reached soon," Wil liam V. Bradley, international president i of the ILA, said "We can. meet with an hour's notice." The association scheduled an afternoon meeting pf its Labor Policy Committee to re view the situation. It had re fused to continue negotiations, and, charged the union broke a contract to extend the ex piration date of their labor agreement. Bradley Had beaten down a move by-. Brooklyi dock leader Anthony (Tough Tony) Anastasia te- put the Brook lyn longshoremen back to work. . , ' - i ' Manpower Insufficient A few longshoremen re ported for work at 8 p.m. but there was not enough manpower to form work gangs. Anastasia,; touring the piers at the morning, shapeup,, pass ed the word' at 8:33 a.m. for the men to go home. "This (the strike) is effec tive from Maine to Browns ville, Tex., including Brook lyn," Bradley said. Anastasia had ordered his men, members of the only ILA local with a sizeable treasury, back to work in the face of a $1 million damage suit threatened " by the New York Shipping Association. The association claimed the ILA broke an agreement to extend its labor contract to Oct. 15. Drivers Escape Injury in Mishap Two drivers escaped injury in a logging truck and pickup truck accident at the intersec tion of Highway 62 and Little Butte rd. yesterday, state po lice said. Extensive damage re sulted to both vehicles. A loaded logging truck driv en by William Kenneth Stog dell. 27, of route 3, box 186B, Medford, attempted to pass a pickup truck driven by George Lang, 51, of Red Blanket mill when the acci dent occurred. The pickup truck attempted to make a left turn in front of the logging truck toward Eagle Point police said. The impact forced both vehicles off the east side of the highway into a ditch where the logs spilled and the trailer turned upside down. The pickup truck land ed on its wheels, officers said. Police said Lang was cited for failure to signal and Stog del for violation of basic rule. Lorena Agnes Klenner, 18, of 916 West Fourth st., Med ford, a n d a Consolidated Freightways truck driven by James Wooton, 1309 Fortune dr., were involved in an acci dent yesterday morning, po lice said. Lorena Klenner was cited for making an improper turn. The accident occurred at Coleman creek rd and High way 99 near Phoenix. Neither driver was injured, police said. Harney Jail Escapees Captured in Wyoming Green River, Wyo. - (DPD -Two of three men who es caped from the Harney coun ty jail in Burns, Ore., Mon day were in jail here today. : Police identified them as Larry, McMurphy, 20, and Clyde Patterson, 35. In another development in the bitter campaign, Defense Minister Duncan Sandys hopped aboard the Khru shchev bandwagon and pledg ed the Conservative party to total disarmament. In a speech at Grimsby, Sandys said 'Nothing short of total dis armament is good enough to day." Pomestic Issues Important 1 But the main battle was pver domestic issues. Labor Party secretary Mor gan Phillips started things off by sayipg that if Labor Wins it will scrap the unpop ular sales tax on furniture, clothes and many household goods. . . Blast Damages Portland Plant Portland-(UPD-An explosion at Precision Test Parts Com pany here today injured one employee and caused about $2,000 damage. The injured person, Margie A. Benson, 33, Gresham, was taken to a Portland hospital and treated for right arm and body burns. She was released. Firemen said the blast ap parently was caused by alco hol exploding in wax during a dye-casting process. Win dows were blown out, light fixtures destroyed and water damage was extensive.
