Industrials Close
With Small Gains
New York -UPD- The stock
market closed the week today
with small gains in industrial
and utility averages and a
small loss in rails.
The DuPont decision, due
after all markets close,
seemed to have less worry for
PuPont stock than at first
imagined. It gained late in
the day.
General Motors also took
the decision in stride and rose
more than a point. A state
ment by Henry Ford III that
Ford will not be split at this
time seemed to help rather
than hurt the stock which re
gained part of a loss of nearly
two points.

Revolt Fails
To Materialize
New Yprk - DPD Material
shortages that could lead, to
lay-offs of factory and build
ing workers spread today as
result of a dock . workers
strike that has stopped cargo
handling in ports from Maine
to Texas.
The strike by 85,000 long
shoremen on the Atlantic and
Gulf coasts was consolidated
today with the quelling pf a
back to work revolt by Brook
Jyn locals of f he Internation
al Longshoremen's Union.
Construction Threatened
A cut in construction work
in Florida was threatened by
the tie-up of steel and ce
ment. Manufacturing in New
England began to feel the
pinch of raw material short
ages. Layoffs of industrial
workers were anticipated if
the strike continues.
The ILA and the New
York Shipping Association,
representing ports from Maine
to Norfolk, Va., met separate
ly to map strategy. No joint
talks were in sight.
Ready To Negotiate
"We are ready to negoti
ate and I hope a settlement
will be reached soon," Wil
liam V. Bradley, international
president i of the ILA, said
"We can. meet with an hour's
notice."
The association scheduled
an afternoon meeting pf its
Labor Policy Committee to re
view the situation. It had re
fused to continue negotiations,
and, charged the union broke
a contract to extend the ex

agreement.

the men to go home.
"This (the strike) is effec

Anastasia had ordered his
men, members of the only
ILA local with a sizeable
treasury, back to work in the
face of a $1 million damage

The association claimed the
ILA broke an agreement to
