Crater lost the ball after the kick-off (Johnson had re turned - 46 yards to the Lion 42) on Roe's interception but CG after a 10-yard loss was forced to punt. McKibbin, -trimmed Illi nois Valley 20 to 0 in football contention at the Medford sta dium on Friday night. Bob and Dick Evans on long runs and Terry Cooper with two kicked conversions in three attempts were the scor ers for the Crusaders. . Bob Evans went 45 yards ohr a punt runback for the opening St. Mary's touchdown in the first quarter and travel ed some 40 yards on a keeper in 'the third canto for another. Dick got the final touchdown in the - third quarter on a sweep and cutback which went for 43 yards. While the Evans " were run ning the ball well, George Lucas led the defensive play in the line.. The downfield blocking and. screening show ed up well for the Crusaders with several good' punt re turns. ' ' i Each team had six first downs. St. Mary's netted 228 yards by all means on the ground and Illinois Valley 92. The Crusaders completed just one of six passes, making nine yards and McKibbin in dicated that the aerial game will get attention in practices this week. - The Cougars tried three passes and completed none. Shasta, Calif., 31 to 23 Friday night in a wild and exhilarating grid iron encounter at Mt. Shasta. The scuffle featured the pinpoint pissing of the Cali fornia school's Tom McHugh and the long, spectacular runs of the Pi.-ates' Mike Cons bruck and Dan Lumley with Corisbruck having the major ity of the romps. While Phoenix could not cope with the Shasta aerial assault, neither could the home team stop the Oregon ians on. the ground. The Pi rates' attack was particular ly effective in the second half when they scored four touch downs, had an 80-yard run to the goal by Consbruck nulli fied by a clipping penalty. Lumley Scores The Pirates' crossed the goal line first after a recov ered fumble gave them the ball on their own 45-yard line. Consbruck ran 37 yards to the MS 18 and Lumley scrambled the rest of the way on a reverse. Mt. Shasta after the :Phoenix kick-off moved from its. own 35 to the Phoe nix 12 and Jim Addler kicked a field goal for 6 to 3. Phoenix took the Shasta back to its 25. The Pirates were held for f downs but a roughing the kicker penalty brought another chance and Consbroke broke to the Mt. Shasta 21 yard line. There, again, Phoenix was stymied. A long McHugh pass carried the Calif ornians to the Pi rate 26 and McHugh tossed a touchdown aerial to John Heile. That made it 9 to 6 for Mt. Shasta at the half. On the third quarter boot off, Phoenix fumbled but re covered on its 12. The Pirates then shook Consbruck open for an 88-yard TD jaunt and MEDFORD a 12 to 9 margin.-The home club came back and Mc Hugh s passes helped it to th Phoenix three-yard line. Heile got over the pay line from there and Addler's ex tra made it 16 to 12. .-.''-Fumbles Help Pirates ' A , fumble recovery gave Phoenix the ball at midf ield and runs by Consbruck, Lum ley and Leon Small moved to the 15. Small . circled the flank to the end zone for Phoenix 18 to 16. Another Mt. Shasta nuff gained the Pi rates possession on their won 35 and Lumley got loose for a 65 yard TD ramble and a 24 to 16 score. McHugh hit John Hotten steinstein with' a long one on a 63-yaru pass play and Hot tenstein journeyed the last 15 yards with the ball. After Addler's bonus boot, the Phoenix lead was just 24 to 23. Then followed the 80-yard run by Consbruck which was called back. However, the Pi rates moved out to the MS 40 with the aid of a 25-yard run by Small. Consbruck shook loose on a pinner for the fi nal touchdown run, and Small went around end for the bonus. Notice! Steve Gray took a hand-off from Dave Jackson and, pass ed to Bob Voris on the 10-yard line on the winning play. ' Bob Hardy set up both Ash land touchdowns with recov eries of the pigskin. In the fi nal moments he fell on the ball on the Yreka 38-yard line when Miner Tom Nelson could not get off a punt. Three plays later the Grizzlies had their touchdown, after having been set back by a penalty. Hardy recovered a fumble in the second quarter and five plays later Voris went the last V-A yards to the goal. " Nelson ran 76 on "a cross buck for the Miner touch down.
