Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1959 1959 County Fair Here on Week End The third annual Kiwanis county fair at the Medford Armory will officially open at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, accord ing to Russ Renner, general chairman. Exhibitors will move in and set up booth displays Wednes day evening starting at 8 o'clock, following erection of booth units and electrical lay out by a work party from the Kiwanis club. - Renner said the booth units have been leased from Co active Crafts, Inc., Portland, are are of the skeleton frame type with fabric drapery back grounds. Work parties from the club will be busy Wednesday eve ning assisting booth exhibi tors with both inside and out side displays, in setting up the show, and working with other service clubs who have con cession rights for the show. Exhibitors Must Have Products in Fair by Thursday Individual exhibitors in the food, textiles, floral and land products departments of the Kiwanis Fair must register their exhibits between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, according to Larry Horton, chairman of the exhibit com mittee. Horton stressed the fact that all entries must be delivered to the Armory prior to 3 p.m. in order to be eligible for the judging which will take place following the close of registra tion. He noted that prior applica tion to exhibit would not be mandatory and that all who brought exhibits in the va rious departments would be welcome. The chairman stated that entries are slightly ahead of last year, but that there were still several classifications that lacked entries. He noted that the county fair could only be successful and maintained from year to year with the support of the adult exhibitors who bring their products to the Armory for the fair. The determination of wheth er another Kiwanis Fair will be staged next year and ex panded to encompass all classes for exhibitors in the years to follow would depend on public acceptance this year, it was reported. "It's up to tne general pub lic," Horton said, "if the pub lic supports the fair - it will be continued. We think this year's show will be outstand ing, a credit to the commuft ity, and worthy of full sup port." DELIVERS OWN CHILD Los Angeles (UPD A 36- year-old policeman who has delivered three babies for mothers unable to reach the hospital in time chalked up his fourth delivery Sunday. This time it was his own child. Austin Burt Fernald performed the task when his wife, Anita, 23, gave birth to a daughter as he raced toward a hospital in their car. Prize Beef To Be Awarded Sunday A prize 4-H beef, to be pur chased by the Medford Ki wanis club at the 4-H-FFA auction Friday, Aug. 21, will be a top door prize of the Kiwanis County Fair, Aug. 20-23. Arrangements have been completed for a special draw ing Sunday evening, Aug. 23, to award the door prize. Officials of the Kiwanis event stated that the move was made in an effort to stim ulate interest in the 4-H auc tion as well as an added in centive for attendance at the Kiwanis County Fair. Officials also reported that Mrs. Oregon, "Mrs. Dorothy Jean Chase of Eugene, will be a guest of the Kiwanis for the four-day event. Her ap pearance in Medford has been arranged by the -Kiwanis County Fair in cooperation with Big Pines Lumber com pany, Puruckers Piano House, and Lawrences Jewelry store. The traveling grandmother, Mrs. Emma Gatewood, of Gallipolis, Ohio,- will make one appearance on Friday eve ning, Aug. 21. Average school teacher in 1879 was paid $195 per year. Parachute Drops Set During Fair Several exhibitions of sky diving, a European import sport, will be a feature of the Kiwanis County Fair at the Medford Armory, Aug. 20-23. The Southern Oregon Sky Divers club will stage exhibi tions of free fall and con, trolled parachute drops Satur day and Sunday afternoon. Tentative time is 2 pjn. both days. Members of the club will also give demonstrations of parachute packing in the Armory Thursday and Friday evenings. J. ' MOLLY Dwight Harsh, 11, member of the Peter Rabbit Misfits 4-H club of the Central Point area holds his favorite rabbit, Molly. County extension agents and 4-H leaders had trouble making room for the rapidly multiplying rabbit ex hibit at the county fair grounds. The poultry and rabbit exhibits are possibly the largest at the annual Jackson county 4-H and -FFA fair which started Sunday and continues through Saturday. Another Big Fair!
