In 19 5 8, the number of ad missions was 210,000 com pared with Dr. Alvarez 1 0 , U U U in 1957. Of the 228 mental in stitutions inspected by the American Psychiatric Asso ciation, only 34 were " ap proved. I read that the "Open Hos pital" policy,, which gives many of the patients in a mental hospital much freedom -perhaps even to go.into town, is becoming more and more widespread throughout the country. It makes the pa tients much happier, and speeds their recovery. Re- Cooks' Delight SIZES S-10-12 M-14-16 -18-20 Success apron! Mayo CUala I cently, when I was visiting I with my old friend, Dr. Fran j cis Braceland, head of the fine Institute of. Family Relations, in Hartford, Conn., I asked the nurses if many of their patients took French leave, and they said, "No, not many." Usually, when a pa tient fails to show up, all they have to do is to look around through the nearby bars and cocktail lounges, and there they will find their man. They say to him, "Come on, bed-time," and back to the hospital he goes.' It is good .to read that the number of community mental health clinic is increasing. Al ready, new laws are encour aging the formation of such clinics, and in many cases helping to finance them. Such clinics help 'in the treatment, rehabilitation and education of mentally disturbed people. Let us all keep remembering that mental disease is the commonest disease there is in this country, and our worst problem next to the threat of war. Quit Being Touchy We must quit sticking our heads in the sand about this problem. We must quit being touchy about the fact that grandfather died in an "asyl um" or brother is in a V.A. mental hospital, or daughter is in psychoanlysis. As I often say, little could be done to clear tuberculosis out of this country so long as people were terribly ashamed of hav ing the disease in their fam ily, and nothing could be done to protect our soldiers from syphilis so long as no news paper editor dared mention the word in his columns. No one is going to be able to do much for our unhappy epil eptics until we face the dis ease squarely, and quit writ ing nasty letters to anyone who tries to get people to un derstand the problem and to treat the patient with exactly the same sympathy as they have for a child with a brain tumor. He said" it was short - sighted and un sound. In a message to the House, where the bill originated, the President said the measure might be of short-run financ ial help to the new state of Alaska but that: ".' . . I believe this to be a short - sighted goal for it eventually could well result in depriving both the Alaskan and federal government of substantial revenue. Sacrific ing sound principle and the long-run public interest in order to achieve a limited im mediate gain does not seem to me to be wise."
