Disappearance of Couple on Desert Continues To Be Mystery ; Los Angeles ' (DPD - The final chapter may soon be written in the mysterious case of Klaus Martens and a pretty nurse named Marajune Walk er who vanished together on Arizona's sun - seared desert more than eight years ago. Martens, a German - born salesman, and Miss Walker, then 22 and a native, of Mal verne, N.Y., left Pasadena, Calif., July 15, 1951, on a Sunday morning flight in a rented plane'for Blythe, Calif. Aircraft Found Their small aircraft, some gasoline still in its tank and its engine in working order, was found 16 days later in the desert 50 miles from Yuma, Ariz. . ; . . The couple was never seen again. No trace was ever found of their bodies. "A case like this one is nev er really closed under these circumstances," s a i d Yuma County Sheriff T. H. (Pete) Newman. "For' one thing, there were too many imex- nlained things. And for another thing, we just had what might have been a new development recently. "Some bones and a skull were found in the general area where they disappeared. But it turned out they had been on the desert too long more than the eight years .these people have been miss ing to be them." Newman is bothered by many unexplained aspects of the case, especially why the .two young people landed, and then abandoned, a still func tioning plane. Newman said it was 10 minutes flying time to safety at the small Arizona town of Welton just '30 miles away from where the plane was found. ., And he said tracks from the plane indicated the couple walked across a plain ly marked but little used road leading to Welton. , "If they could have made it to Welton, they would have been safe," Newman said. The boy was found crumpled in a city park. His pal, Frankie Mack, 11, tear fully told police he was too scared to admit the shooting. Doctors reported that Stanley's chances of survival are good, but complete recovery is doubtful. J " A Brief note found on the plane said the couple had walked west. It had their names and was timed "2010 hours Sunday." A postscript to the note also in Martens' handwriting but much more firmly written, added "5:45 A.M. Monday." There was no explanation in the note of the desert landing. No Hope for Life Newman has no hope the couple ever will be found alive. "They couldn't stay there long without water, and there isn't any there," he said. "If they tried to walk out 35-40 miles, they might not have made it. "Nobody knows why they landed. Hess' daughter had been married to, and divorced from, the young salesman. The lawyer is handling the missing man's small estate, which he said amounted to $500. An insurance policy on Martens' life for $3,000 has been paid to his mother, Mrs. Ferdinand Martens, who now lives in Frankfurt, Germany. important for the well-being of the community. Only when these antiquated laws become annoying or a nuisance are they likely to be removed from " the books. Usually it is enough that they are forgotten. Consider the difficulty or logic in enforcing these odd bits of legislation, all of them "law" in a par ticular city or state: No Tombstone Ads -"' In Roanoke, Va., it is against the law to advertise on tombstones. A Georgia law calls for the arrest of any citizen who goes tp, church on Sunday without a loaded rifle. . The only vehicle that a per son under the influence 'of liquor may operate with im punity in Kansas is a wheel barrow. Boston has a law which re quires a hotel owner to put up and bed down the horse of a guest. A Michigan statute requires inmates of State Prison to pay for their own room and board. A Los Angeles ordinance makes it unlawful for young people to dance together un less they are man and wife. Kingston, N. Y., forbids bathing in the nude between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Six visits to the home of a Maryland lass is the equival ent of proposal of marriage in that state. El ' Paso, Texas, -churches are required to provide spit toons.. - Dallas, Texas, required all dogs to display headlights at night. Two Union Jail Escapees Returned . La Grande-(DPD -Two Union county jail escapees who fled Friday night were back in the lockup today. Brow Provost, 24, was taken into custody about noon Sun day at North Powder and Larry Morand Cornelius, 16, turned himself in about 10 ajn. Sunday at a ranch house near the town of Union. ' They got away after getting Jailer Jay Conley into the cell and throwing a blanket over his head. Cornelius is being held for Washington state authorities. He escaped from the reforma tory at Chehalis while serving time for auto theft. Provost, held on a forgery charge, was scheduled to ap pear in court today. He- has pleaded guilty to writing bad checks. Robert Taylor's Wife Gives Birth To Girl Santa Monica,. Calif. (DPD The wife of Robert Taylor gave birth Sunday night to the couple's second daughter, at St. John's hospital.
