The Fat Child All over the country thou sands of unhappy mothers are struggling to try to keep their chubby daugh ters of sons from bee o m ina baby ele phants. Usual ly, they find that it . is an i m p o s s ible job. The moth- frr the child from Br. According to a release by the N u t r 1 1 i o n Foundation (99 Park ave., New York, N.Y.) on talking with- 100 over weight hospital patients, phy sicians found that 65 per cent bad been fat in childhood. ; The commonest cause for the fatness of these children is heredity. At least 50 pet cent had. a fat father and 60 per cent had a fat.-taothef. When both parents are fat, their poof children have a hard road to go. Among adults with a normal weight only l per cent had a fat father and 38 oer cent had a fat mother. According to the Nu trition Review, this problem of juvenile obesity is a major U.S. problem. . Serious Diseases It not Only -Is a problem which produces great unhap- piness to the boys and girls concerned, but the abnormal weieht. in middle life, is like ly to bring out a tendency to serious heart or arterial diseases, or to diabetes or gout. The fat child has to nut nn with a lot of kiddinff. and often has to accent the fact thai he or she is notJ going to Jje popular with per sons of the oDDOsite sex. The very.ftt girl at a dance is likely to be a well-cower. These unhappinesses, nat urally, tend to produce cer tain disturbances in charac ter. Fat men and fat women tend to be slow and. easy going, and when the obesity is marked, there is not much chance of the person's ever getting a job. Usually, I think, all the Deputies Checking Burglary Reports- Jackson county sheriffs deputies are investigating the burglary of the Addie Price residence in Gold Hill and of the Gus L. Witte residence, 2914 South Pacific highway, Gold Hill police . reported Thursday that apparently the burglary had occurred at the Price home some time during the past several months. Sev eral items were taken, includ ing four silver dollars, pellet guns and ammunition, a dia mond ring valued at $300, -two cigarette lighters and a small gas motor. The burglary of the Witte residence was also reported Thursday. A total of $80 was taken from a purse in a cedar chest and $30 from a desk drawer some time between Sunday and Tuesday. I doubt if they should try. All their effort does is to make an awful lot of conflict in the home, an awful lot of annoyance, and an awful lot- of unpleasant argument. Young People Marrying Early In a tecent release the Population Reference Bureau, Inc., of Washington 5, D.C., tells us that brides and grooms in the United States are' getting younger all the time. Last year, the average age for first-time bridegrooms was 23 years and for first time brides was 20 years; but now many girls are getting married at 18. In 1890, first time bridegrooms averaged 26 years and first-time brides 22 years of age. In many ways early mar riage is good. In parts of Europe many a clerk or sales man cannot hope to get mar ried until he is 30 or 35. Un til then, his salary is too small for two! Last year in America some 45 per cent of women marrying for the first time were less than 20 years of age and more than 13 per cent of first-grooms were also under 20 years of age. For tunately, today, in several of our states girls are no longer allowed to marry at the age of 12. In 1958, the lowest minimum marriage age for girls in any state was 14. Curiously, I read that Idaho and Missouri have permitted boys of . 15 to marry. Many Re-marriages Many people will be inter ested to see that last year in the U.S.A. about a quarter of all marriages were re-mar- riages; It is saddening to note that one in 20 divorced worn en re-marrying was a teen ager! Obviously, many early marriages don't work out. The divorced men re-married on the average at the age of 36 and divorced women, re married on the average at the age of 31. Many oldsters mar ry a second time. These wid owers average 57 and the widows average 47. One of every eight widowers return ing to the altar has passed his 70th birthday, and one out of every 25 widows getting married again was past 70. -. Cataracts in a New-Bern Baby A woman who says she had German measles during her pregnancy tells me her baby was born with cataracts. It may well be that the mea sles was the cause. I can't give .any advice as to what to do. The parents should con sult the best eye specialist available and abide by his opinion. Housing Construction Planned at Portland Portland - (UPD - Robert F. Paul pleaded guilty to charges of striking Thomas Shepard, Of the Tom Thumb Market, Table Rock rd., in the face July 25. - 31 Burglaries Reported To City Police in July A total of 31 burglaries were reported to Medford po lic eduring July, a sharp in crease from the 14 reported during June. The figure also represents an increase over the 21 bur glary reports in July, 1958. The over-all total for major offenses last month was 93, compared to 80 in June and 82 in July of last year. Besides burglaries, there were reports in Julyfof 2 rob beries, 5 larcenies involving more than $50, 48 larcenies ifi volving less lhah $50 and 7 auto thefts. ' .. Miscellaneous Offenses M i s c e llaneous Offense re ports totaled 73 6, "against 684 in June and 779 in July, 1958. Among these reports last month were 2 involving forg ery or counterfeiting, 19 in volving embezzlement or fraud, 8 involving sex . of fenses, 8 involving liquor law violations, 59 involving drunk enness, 9 involving disorderly conduct, 7 involving vagrancy and 4 involving driving while intoxicated. In the traffic department, there were 116 road and driv ing law violation reports, and 337 traffic and motor vehicle law reports - compared to 134 and 298 in June and 102 and 460 in July, 1958. A total of 56 citations for violating the basic rule were reported.
