Johnson (D-Texas) is the 1 e a d i n g Presidential choice of Democrats in Con gress, according to a Congress ional Quarterly poll released yesterday. - In the same poll. Republican Senators and Representatives made Vice President Richard M. Nixon their top choice for President by a 6-1 margin over New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller (R). Rockefeller was their first choice, for Vice President. ? Johnson, the Senate major ity leader, was named to head a ticket with Sen. John T. Kennedy (D-Mass.) for vice resident. t The poll, distributed July J2, just before Nixon's trip to Russia and Poland, asked each member ot Congress to- give fyour judgment on your par ty's strongest possible ticket for President and Vice Presi dent." J The response was unusually peavy. Anonymous replies JVere received from 189 Demo crats, comprising 55 per cent If the party's total member ihip, and 115 Republicans, making up 61 per cent of the ntire GOP strength in Con gress. . . Democratic Results Johnson moved up from third place in a CQ poll last January on the Democratic presidential race. Sen. Stuart Jymington (D-Mo.), the winner t)f the January poll, fell back into a virtual tie with Adlai i. Stephenson and Sen. John t. Kennedy (D-Mass.). Sen. kubert H. They also ' passed over Svmineton and Humph r e y , Mboth of whom are classed as willing candidates, to pick a man who says he is not inter ested in trying for the nomi nation. . , ' Johnson was given an ad vance look at the poll results and commented: "Any mem ber of Congress appreciates the confidence of his col leagues." . , But the majority leader re peated his often-issued states ment that "I am not a candi date for the Presidency." Republican Results In the Republican Presi dential race, Nixon widened his lead over Rockefelled by 9 percentage- points from the January poll. The only other man to draw mention was Sen. Nixon led Rockefeller, 25 votes to 11, in the East, and scored a near sweep in other parts of the country. He was the Presidential choice 'on all five ballots from Southern Re publicans, on 47 of 52 from the Midwest and on 20 of 21 from the West. In the Democratic voting, on the other hand, each section had a different choice for President: Johnson in the South, Stevenson in the West, Symington in the Midwest and Kennedy in the East. Johnson received 39 .of his 60 votes from the South, but he also gained strength in each of the other sections of the country from the January poll. " - Symington, despite his loss of votes in the South - and West, shared with Stevenson the distinction of having the best-balanced strength in all four regions. Kennedy receiv ed more votes outside the South than anyone else, but was named on only three Presidential ballots in Dixie. Other Democrats who re ceived votes for President were: Michigan Gov. G. Men- nen Williams (D), 4; Rep. Ches ter W. Bowles (D-Conn.), 3; Sens. Frank J. Lausche CD Ohio), John L. McClellan CD Ark.), Estes Kefauver (D Tenn.) and Richard B. Russell (D.-Ga.), and Reps. A Sunday, Aug. 16, 1959 Timber Sold at 6LM Oral Aifcfion Two facts of ;thnber in southern Douglas county were sold by the Medf ord district of the bureau of land manage ment at an oral auction ;Sale here Aug. 13. The two tracts, which contained an estimated 11,278,000 board -feet, brought a total price of $339,837.80 j There was heavy competi tion for the first tract contain ing 1,702,000 board feet locat ed on Whitehorse Creek near Azalea. Of the four bidders taking part in the sale, Cave- neer, Inc. of Grants Pass made the highest offer, . which in cluded a price of $44.20 for the Douglas fir and a total price of $70,367.60. Patterson Lumber company, Inc. of Glendale was the high er of two bidders competing for a tract located in Elk Val ley containing 9,576,000 board feet. Their bid was $29.75 for the Douglas-fir and $269, 470.20 for the total sale. " The Medford district of the bureau has indicated that the next sale planned by the office will include six tracts vary ing from 13,000 to 5,405,000 board feet with a total volume of 16,060,000 board feet. Three of the tracts, containing 10,- 577,000 board feet are in Klamath county. Two tracts in Jackson county contain 5,470,- 000 board feet. One 13,000 board feet sale is in Josephine county. r Tests Scheduled For School Pupils Tests for under-age children who wish to enter Medford public schools in the fall term will : be held from Aug. 17 through Aug. 31, school offi cials have announced. - According to Oregon law, children are accepted for Sep-, tember entrance if their sixth birthday is on or before Nov. 15. Medford public schools will accept children whose sixth birthday is on or before Jan. 31, 1960, however, providing they show a mental develop ment of 6Vi years on a men tal age test. She said the event brought about $150 for the group's use in furthering the neighbor hood park-development proj ect. " . ' ' About $125 may be used fo purchasing a merry-go-round, it is understood. Those attending were also entertained by Mrs. Davidson herself, masquerading as a clown, and by rides on the American Legion's 40 et 8 voiture.' , . Receipts Are Profit The receipts from sales of food and refreshments, repre sent a clear profit, it is un derstood, since all the items were donated. x Many who attended, Mrs. Davidson said, expressed the hope that the evening of "sur prizes and prizes" could be come an annual affair. A group of residents in the area around the park, which is located between Hamilton and Plum sts. at 13th st. on Medford's west side, have brought it from a vacant lot to a popular neighborhood playground through their vol untary efforts. The "Fun for Funds' eve ning represented the latest in their continuing efforts to im prove the facility. Blue Tongue Found In County Sheep- Blue tongue, an infectious disease, has been identified in two Jackson county sheep flpcks", Dr. L. E.' Bodenweiser, state veterinarian, reported Friday. The state department of ag riculture's chief livestock san itary oficial said a third Jack son county flock is being in vestigated and that the de 'pEtment will cooperate with sheep owners and veterinar ians in obtaining additional blood samples for use in di agnostic laboratories. f In alerting ranchers to the menace, the state veterinarian listed these early symptoms: swollen ears, swollen muzzle, sores in mouth, bleeding ul cers, swelling of gums and lameness. Control of blue tongue in Oregon is traced to prompt vaccination where possible. State and local veterinarians have the , flocks in question under quarantine and super vision. 4 ' . The disease- is most com monly transmitted by a tiny insect. v 17 Disease Cases Reported Last Week Seventeen cases of com- municable disease were re ported to the Jackson County Health department for the week ending Aug. 14, accord ing to Dr. C. I. Drummond, public health physician. Influenza accounted for more than half the cases. Three cases of influenza were reported in Ashland, three in Shady Cove, and two each'in Trail and Phoenix. Camp White reported two cases of tuberculosis. " Medford reported t h r e e cases of chicken pox an Ash land reported one. One case of strep throat was reported at Shady Cove." On Tuesday of last week, Korny-Kampers painted , the drums green and this week the project was completed with white letter ing by Penny Sampert. During the business meet ing, club members discussed the coming fair and the'pre fair outdoor cooking : contest held July 20. Jan Main received champi on and blue ribbon awards in twister making and complet ed twister. Marda Heffner, Cynthia Charley, and Hugh Charley were awarded second glace in twister making and third in completed twister. In the cornbread contest, Craig- Wright received -champion and blue ribbon awards for the making and completed cornbread. Linda Smith, Bec ky Gates, and Penny Sampert will exhibit outdoor menus during Jackson County Fair this week at the fairgrounds. Boe as recruiter-in-charge of the Medford Navy recruiting station. Chief Boe has been order ed to the USS Interceptor, a radar picket ship operating out of San Francisco. Chief Emmerlich is a vet eran of 23 years Naval service. His most recent duty was aboard the escort destroyer, USS Jenkins, operating out of Pearl Harbor. He has indicated the inten tion of retiring in the Rogue river valley upon completion of this tour of duty. Previously radar domes were made with overlapping seams that pro duced slight distortions of the radar beam.: The new "ra dome," developed'- by the Aviation Products Division of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber company here, is constructed in staggered and laminated sections to give a uniform thickness of about three thirty- -seconds of an inch. The 54,000 cubic foot radome, to be used in the Nike-Zeus anti-missile missile program will have a , base diameter of 37 feet. .
