Erickson, Oregon state health officer, said this week. Dr. Erickson made the statement to answer ques tions on whether Salk vac cine gives everyone absolute protection against polio. His statement was released by Dr. C. I.-Drummond, acting part-time health officer for Jackson county. "There have been, and will continue to be, a few individ uals who develop paralytic polio even after receiving three or more properly-spaced shots of Salk vaccine," the state public health officer said. Prelection Expected About 80 per cent protec tion can be expected for ade quately - inoculated persons, Dr. Erickson said. Medical authorities have emphasized this since the vaccine was re leased for public use in 1955 and many times since, the health officer pointed out. "Those persons who devel op paralytic polio after hav ing three or more Salk shots still usually receive some benefit from vaccination," Dr. Erickson explained. "Cases are likely to be less severe and deaths are rare." "Salk vaccine does not pre vent polio itself; it prevents paralysis and this reduces polio to a non-dangerous dis ease." Short Supply It's dangerous to believe that one or two shots give protection, Dr. Erickson warned. Salk vaccine today is in short supply, but as soon as it becomes available every one should obtain the full three-shot protection, he ad vised. Also, if it has been at least a year, since the, third shot a fourth booster dose should be given, Dr. Erickson said. The Salk vaccine seems to be giving higher than 80 per cent protection. This was the first age group to be vaccin ated. Today this group has the lowest incidence of paralytic polio. Pre-school children and adults formerly had fewer cases of polio than did the school children. Fewer ' of them have been vaccinated so far and, as a result, doc tors are finding a greater per centage of the polio cases oc cur in these two groups, Dr. Erickson concluded.
