A Sunday, Aug. 16, 1959 Garden Party Held by Club The Ernest Barnes' home, 1906 East Main street, was the scene for the Contempor ary Book club party August 8 when members entertained their husbands and friends at dinner in the gardens. Tables for 72 were set on the large lawn. Flaming torcheres among the back ground of shrubbery encir cled the patio and garden, which had been enhanced by Mrs. Raymond Miksche's ex otic flower arrangements. During the cocktail hour Caesar Muzziola, playing his accordion, wandered among the guests on the patio and found himself frequently joined by impromptu barber shop quartets. Mrs. Barnes was assisted in planning the dinner by the Mesdames Edwin R. Durno, Dwight Findley, McCleod Maurice, Raymond Miksche and Jean Hart. Shower Honors Miss Boardman Miss Sue Boardman, whose marriage to Gary Hueners will be an event of September 4 at ' the First Methodist church, was honored guest at a bridal shower given August 11 by Miss Nancy Adams and her mother, Mrs. Ross Adams, at the Adams' new home on Pioneer road. The bride -elect is the daughter of Mrs. Alberta Boardman 726 West Fourth street. Mr. Hueners is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hue ners, Jacksonville. The serving table was deco rated in pink and white. The honored guest was presented a shower of gifts which were , J " M 3 piaceu in a wiuie juuicu umbrella. Guests included Mrs. Gary West, Mrs. George Thomas, and the Misses Lynda Smith, Suzan Hubbard, Carolyn Carr, Jeanne Klatt, Carolyn Hillyer, Carol McKeown, Sue Knight, Judy Anderson, Sonya Lea, Myda McCabe and Nancy Nie dermeyer. N. Johnson, 130 Hargadine street, Ashland, in a ceremony held August 9 at Trinity Episcopal church, Ash land. The Rev. John Thompson III officiated at the three o'clock afternoon ceremony held on the birth date of the bride's mother. Miss Helene Robinson of Southern Oregon college, music teacher of both the bride and bridegroom, played the organ wedding mu sic. Pink and white gladiolus decorated the church. Mr. Johnson is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rayno Anton John son, Mt- Edgecumbe, Alaska. Mrs. Johnson flew from Sitka for the ceremony. Given in marriage by hep father, the bride wore a waltz length white nylon lace dress with long i sleeves. Her veil was shoulder length and she carried a bouquet of white or chids and stephanotis. Her ru- bv earrings were a gift of the bridegroom and a small gold nugget -cross she wore was brought from Sitka by Mrs. Johnson. Miss Ann Garner attended the bride. She wore a pink lace waltz length frock witn pink lace picture hat and car ried a bouquet of white spider chrysanthemums. Little Kris- ten and Randi Johansen, Port land, nieces of the bride were flower girls. Barry Pitts, Ashland, serv ed as best man. Alan H. Jo hansen, Portland, brother of the bride, and Michael East man, Ashland, seated the guests. Steven Johansen, Port land, nephew of the bride, was ring bearer. Following the ceremony a reception was held in the par ish hall of the church attend ed by 65 relatives and friends. Mrs. Clarence Weida, Port land, cut and served the wed ding cake and Miss Irene Sim mons. Portland, presided at the punch bowl. The newlyweds traveled to the coast and Eugene on their wedding trip. The bride wear ing for. traveling an orchid colored suit with white acces sories. They are making their home at 130 Hargadine street, Ashland. The bride attended , Med ford High school and South ern Oregon college and is a stenographer in the county ex tension service office in the county courthouse. Portland Schedule, for Opera Company Announced Portland Program for the September 3-7 performances of the San Francisco Opera company in Portland has been announced by Kurt Herbert Adler, general director. The director and members of the Oregon Centennial Fine Arts committee chose six great operas from the world renowned company's repertoire.- . Included will be the world premiere of the company's presentation of a Gluck opera, "Orfeo and Euridice," Sep tember 6. On opening night Septem ber 3 will be a seldom seen opera, "L'Amore dei Tre Re" starring Dorothy Kirsten and Giorgio Tozzi. Gov. and Mrs. Mark O. Hat field will serve as official host and hostess on Youth night, Saturday, Sept. 5, when "I Pagliacci" and an opera new comer, the ballet-filled "Car mina Burana," are performed. Two Puccini operas, "La Boheme" September 4 and visiting at the home of Dr. Byers' brother and sister-in-law, the Malcolm Byers. The guests are from Nebraska. Arrangements of bird of gladiolus decorated the area, floral arrangements on the f Area Students Win Scholarships Eugene - John Robert Pond, 703 Kenyon avenue, Medford, has received the $250 Harry and David Holmes Scholar ship for study here next year. He will major in. mathematics or physics at the University of Oregon. Three other Medford area students will enroll in the university this fall 'under scholarships. Miss Elaine Vir ginia Kroon, Central Point, has received a $252 scholar ship from the University of Oregon Mother's club; Donald Hammersly, Gold Hill, has re ceived a $400 Joseph Kinsman Starr Scholarship, and Steven Kelle of Riddle has received a $300 Starr Scholarship. Miss Kroon will major in medical technology, Mr. Hammersly in law, and Mr. Keele in liberal arts. All four will be fresh men here' this fall. "Madame Butterfly" Septem ber 7 will complete the pro gram. A repeat performance of the lively "La Boheme wnn miss jursten as the so prano lead is scheduled 'for the Labor Day matinee Sep tember 7. Art Society Show Today in Ashland Ashland - The Greenwich Village art show of the South ern Oregon Society of Artists will continue through today at Lithia park in Ashland. Main St. Medford Footlighters Play to Open i The Footlighters' produc tion "On the Bridge at Mid night" will open August 18. The melodrama, written by Bruce Brandon and directed by Bob Ford, will run five successive nights in two weeks, Tuesday through Sat urday. The , cast includes many newcomers. Among them are Dr. Lawrence Ware as the comical Southerner, Jack Frost; Mrs. Marie Pierce as the aristocratic Mrs. W i 1 d a Wainwright; Mrs. Joseph Mur phy as the stammering daugh ter of the town gossip, May belle Billings; Mrs. John Lusk as the hero's ex-girl friend; and Miss Marianne Samuel son, the heroine of the play, Queenie DeLorme. The Footlighter fans will remember from past perform ances Chuck Tucker who will portray the hero, Horatio Wainwright; Mrs. Al Reiss, who will appear as the 19 year old "baby" Eunice Wain wright; Mrs. Thayer Tarvin as the spinster, Minerva Courte nay; Mrs. Paul Dix, the viva cious and "lower class" Gypsy Heather: Mrs. Marion Keim as the prying Cora Billings; Dr. Frank Roberts as Queen- ie's father Joe North; Thayer Tarvin as the sly, black-heart ed villain, and Frank Buchter as the surprismgly love-sick butler, Halstead. The story is about Mrs. Wil- da Wainwright trying to be courageous about her son's sudden and unexpected mar riage, until she hears local gossip that her new daughter-in-law was once a common dancer. She then tries to break up her son's marriage. How the beautiful heroine saves her marriage and her reputation is the basis for the evening's entertainment. California Family Are Valley Guests Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George L. Watson, 2236 Ruhl Way, are their son-in-law and daughter, Techni cal Sergeant and Mrs. M. E. Vanderlinden, and children, Oceanside, Calif. The children are Mark, 13, Becky Lane, 8, Trudy Kay, 5, and Kristin Ann 9 months. Sergeant Vanderlinden is in 30 dayi leave from the Marine corps. The family plans to return home August 20. While here they have visit ed Lake of the Woods, Crater and Diamond lakes. Others were Sally Haley and Michele Russo, Portland. Forty-three paintings were selected by the judge, Adolph Dehn, ANA, New York, a widely known painter' and stone lithographer. Less than 25 per cent of the paintings submitted were admitted to the highly-ranked exhibition. Wolf's oil painting, "Mo ment of Dejection," is an "ab stract expressionism of a mo ment of loneliness", in. dull, soft patterns of gray. The Russo painting, "Stone scape," won a $100 prize. . The exhibition will contin ue through August 30 at the Charles and Emma Frye mu seum, Terry at Cherry streets, Seattle. Recent Bride Honored by Bridal Shower' Central Point Mrs. Gerald Mattey was honored recently at a bridal shower given by Mrs. Jack Griffitts, Central Point. Mrs. Charles LaCasse was co-hostess. Mrs. Mattey is the former Georgetta Leedy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 'John Leedy, 5323 Table Rock road. Her wedding was an event of July 3 at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. R. H. Mathewson, of the Foursquare Gospel church, Medford. Members of the family attended. The newlyweds are making their home at 508 Palm street. Guests at the shower were Miss Darlene Graves, Mrs. Sam Graves, Miss June Hop kins, Mrs. Robert Phariss, Mrs. John Leedy, Mrs. James Jones and Mrs. Paul Hopkins. Visitor Attends Festival While Visiting in Valley Robert Middleton, Long Beach, v Calif., spent three weeks recently with Mr. and Mrs. Edward C. Root, Jack sonville highway. The visitor, a long-time friend of the Roots, had re cently returned from Glascow in his native Scotland. While her, he attended the Shake spearean plays, with which he had been familiar in Scotland, and visited other attractions in the valley. Mr. Grosbeck is a son of Mr. . and Mrs. Liman Gros beck, Seattle, Wash. The Gros- becks also plan to be in Salt Lake City for the August 17 wedding. Officiating at the afternoon ceremony will be one of the council of the twelve apostles. Miss Wilde is a graduate of Prospect High school and at tended Southern Oregon Col lege. She is a graduate of the University of Utah and ia now working as a public health nurse in Seattle. For two years she was a missionary in Central America. Mr. Grosbeck attended Se attle schools and is a medical student at the University of Washington. He also served as a missionary in Central America for two years where be met Miss Wilde. Lithia Park Picnic Planned by Circles Members of Mary, Miriam, Lydia, Ruth and Esther circles of Zion Lutheran church will have a combined potluck picnic at Lithia park in Ash land Thursday, August 20.
