Judge Fred McHenry denied two motions by the defense to dismiss the case. Defense At torney Arthur Higgs said he would attempt to" show that a confession by Bodi was ob tained by persuasion and kind ness, rather than through du ress and intimidation. Higgs charged Bodi was promised freedom if guilt was admitted. Bodi is charged in the death of little Peggy Susan Smith, daughter of Mrs. Clara Smith. The child died one day after being struck by Bodi. The national monetary unit of Panama is th btlboa. The Medical by TREATMENT FOR DIABETES A new oral drug, now call ed DBI, and - useful in the treatment of diabetes was re cently report e d b y D r s. Louis Freed man, Georges Ungar, Sey mour L. Sha piro and Har vey Sadow of New York. - - At the re c e n t meeting of the Ameri can Medical association, in At lantic City, the authors re ported that with the new drug, most of the 1,708 patients treated for from three to 15 months did well. Even many young patients did well. No serious signs of toxicity were observed, but there were some side effects such as digestive upsets. Ten per cent of the patients treated failed to re spond to the treatment. The chemical name of the drug is phenformin, and it belongs to the group of bi guanides. It's mode of action is still unknown. It works in some cases in which the previously discovered drugs have not worKed. in seven out of 10 adult patients it took the place of insulin. Sexual Abnormalities As I must keep pointing out in this column, people must not look on the sexual deviate with disgust or disapproval or a desire to punish. Some day our cruel and antiquated laws must be changed so that these people can be treated as sick or malformed persons, and not as criminals. An important paper on this subject was just published in the London Lancet by Dr. K. L. Moore. He reported studies of cells taken from the lining of the mouth of infants just born. During a year, cells from 3,715 babies born in a hospital in Winnipeg were ex amined under a microscope. In all but five of these babies the sex was determined by the microscopic test was the same as that suggested by the appearance of the child's ex ternal genitalia. The five ex ceptions were all in infants who looked like boys but who had body cells typical of females. Apparently, they were girl babies who, because of some abnormality of devel opment in the womb, had ac quired a male type of external genitals. Something, perhaps, went wrong with the internal secretions. The point I want to keep hammering home is that when, perhaps 14 years from now, these infants who have been brought up as boys, keep maintaining that they have always been girls, with a girl's set of emotions, plus a tenden cy to get a crush on a boy, and later a desire for a home and children, we-all of us must be ready to admit that a mistake was made, and that it should be rectified as soon as possible. Why can't we feel sympathy for these unfortu nate boys and girls, so cruelly gypped by an accident of na ture? Why do we persist in re fusing them their right to be operated on? Why, when they are operated on, do we refuse to change their birth certifi cate? On my desk right now are very sad letters from three fine people who know that surely a horrible mistake was made when they were born. The doctor said they - were boys, but these people have always known that they were feminine. As one says, "He", is never so happy as when cooking, or sewing, or clean ing house for his sister. These people want terribly to have the mistake rectified,, but in Factory Parking Lot Is Former Home East Hartford, Conn.-flJPD-Clifford R. Brewer, a 25-year veteran at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Corp., goes home when he goes to work. The tobacco farm where he lived as a boy had been turn ed into a huge parking lot at the aircraft factory. 'JEWELERS! 129 S. Mayo CUass this country it cannot be done. Why? Partly because good people who know exactly how God feels about everything say, "God wouldn't like it done." Also, our laws have never been changed to make possible the helping of these people. Perhaps worst of all, if an operation were to be performed, it would be "big news" all over the world, and the publicity would scare out the hospital authorities, the doctors, and the patient.
