Duff remained at home today, still convalescing from a stomach ailment which has kept him from his office near ly two weeks. City hall sources said he was not expected back at his desk until next week. Duff was reported resting comfort ably but following his doctor's orders in extending the convalescence. WSnmers Announced For AppDegate- Kuch Pre -Fair Karen Jossy of Antelope and Truman Elmore of Ap plegate were double winners in the Applegate-Ruch Pre fair held at the Ruch Grade school July 31. Karen was named champion in both the swine and dairy showman- MEETING NEWSMEN in Washington, California's Gov. Edmund G. Brown calls himself probable favorite son candidate for President and indicates be might make real try at prize. With him is Mrs. Brown. Governor is in Capital for conferences with California congressmen. IHE EVIDENCE STACKS UP there's no Gin like GORDON'S -- - ship divisions as she bested some 40 other competitors in the swine and dairy show manship divisions. Truman was the outstand ing livestock judge and won the trophy as the best beef showman from the Applegate-Ruch clubs. Other top winners named include Craig Wright, West side as champion sheep show man; Ron Anderson, Ante lope, champion beef show man; Robert Straube, Ruch, swine trophy winner; Madge Barker, Ruch, sheep trophy winner; and Richard Bottger, Ruch, dairy trophy winner. Club members from all parts of Jackson county practiced their judging and showman ship in the final practice fair before the regular county fair which is scheduled Aug. 16-22 at the Jackson county fair grounds in Medford. Watkins Katy Did ... But What Wall Never Know "Katv" should be ashamed of herself for whatever it was that she did. What she did seems not so important as the fact that so many seem to know "she did." Funny that with all the hullabaloo that goes on about it, it is never a voice at all; for the Katydid has no voice. He can't sing a solitary note. His "voice" that accuses Katy of doing something is actually in his legs. He has a large pair of stomach muscles in his little i n s i d e s that stretch, releasing a membrane that snaps like a drum-head. This, together with a sawing action of a wing on a small vein, produces the sound. It's the same idea as the small boy holding a stick against the pickets of a fence while he walks along. About the same noise can be made by rubbing one's finger nails on a washboard. The Katydid Modem Equipment! Speedy Delivery! deadly Mix. The Loudest Noise It is agreed among men ofl science that the "song of the Katydid" can be heard over a! quarter of a mile. In compari son with the size of the in sect, it is the loudest noise made by any living creature The trouble in measuring the distance the Katydid can be heard is that it would be im possible to hear just one. Katy- did, without having its "voice" jammed by a couple of lozenl others, all trying to outdo one another. The Katyd'd "sings" only all night, and only the, male cad make the noise. The poor lit-l tie female is voiceless; she must sit silently and listen! while he accuses her. Actual-I ly, the "call" is a mating song, or a serenade celebrating a successful courtship. Grasshopper The Katydid is the best known of the so-called long horned grasshoppers; is everi better known tor tne "caus than bv its aDDearance as few neoDle ever see these tree-l dwelline insects. The Katydid in general bodv aDDearance resembles! the grasshopper in outline; id has a high back and a green color that blends in with foli age so well the insect becomes invisible. Even the ey are green. If you 'have a flair of scientific, observation you will further discover that the female's "ears" are located on the front lees. Be careful searching, in the late summer, you may find little rows of eggs firmly at tached to twigs where they wait for the spring warmth to bring them to life. What you can't find out, however is just what it was that "Katy did."
