Scoring in all but one frame of the short five-inning game, the Central Pointers were still able to collect only one hit from losing pitcher John Rhodes. The lone smash came in the first inning off the bat of Pat Pepper. Larry Johnson and Galen Roberson collected theh two Ashland hits yielded by Ed Bowman. Central Point chucker. Bowman struck out 4 bat ters and Rhodes fanned three Central Point led all the way, scoring one run In each of the three first innings and two in the final fifth frame. Nina Hits by Yanks ' The Yankee-Giant fracas, a free-swinging affair, saw a to tal of 15 hits given up. Yan kee pitcher Mike Barnes gave up 6 and Giant pitcher Gilles pie allowed nine. ' The Yanks trailed, 1 to 2, going Into the second Inning but they held the Giants score less while they tallied twice. A walk to Jack Lowery, a tri ple by Wayne Couch, and sin gles by Terry Gardner and' Jim Teague brought two runs in for the Yanks and they led for the rest of the game. Big stickmen for the Yanks were Barnes and Jim Cal houn, who got two hits each, and Couch and Danny Miles, who belted out triples. QtpajajaaaT FLUID FLYER-Colleen Dodge of Sacramento, Calif., is listed among the hoped-for total of 100 water skiers for this week end's two-day meet at Gardener Lake. Colleen last year was second in slalom and jumping and fourth in tricks in junior girls' regional competition. Sponsor of the meet is the Gardener Lake Water Ski club. About 1000 spectators are expected to be at the lake Saturday and Sunday. Bears Trim Chiefs, Gain Narrow Lead Oregon Men To Compete Eugene (DPD A four-man track and field contingent from University of Oregon planned to join other members of the United States team to day for the dual meet with Russia Saturday and Sunday. From Oregon will be de cathlon ace Dave Edstrom, who finished third in the meet when it was held in Moscow last July; miler Jim Grelle, who went the 1,500-meter dis tance in the same meet a year ago; veteran Bill uemnger, who lost a hair-line decision the first time the Americans and Russians met; and rookie Dyrol Burleson, national AAU 1,500 -meter champion. Softball Game Jan Bateman of Central Point had a shutout going un til the last inning, when a hit, two walks and an error put five runs in the Eagle Point scoring column Monday night during the girls' softball rec reation league. ' . Central Point came up with the win, however, scoringv18 runs to 5 for the Eagle Point ers. The game was held at Camp White Memorial stadi um. The league is for girls 16 years old and younger. Miss Bateman, who gave up only two hits, swung a big stick to help win her own ball game. She collected three hits at four trips to the plate-a triple and two singles. Carol Strauss of Central Point knocked out a triple and a double and Judy Patter son connected for a triple to aid the Central Point cause. Miss Huffman of Eagle Point clobbered out the only home run of the evening. Jay Callahan and Miss Per ry pitched for the losers, giv ing up eight hits. Fishing Was Fair At Lake Last Week Fishing was reported as fair at Diamond Lake last week, with best catches being made on trolling flatfish or flies. A. J. Dichura Jr. and party of San Francisco limited out. The largest kamloop caught to date has been a nine-pounder, 28 inches long." The weather last week at the lake was cool but it warmed up for the week end. Hot weather and cool nights are expected for the coming week. WeeEt -..Encl Congest IFor Water Skiers Slated! fit lake A wet week end is on tap for area residents this Sat urday and Sunday when the Gardener Lake Water Ski club makes its annual splash. Local novice skiers are es pecially invited. The two-day meet has at tracted champion skiers from Seattle, Portland, Eugene and California points-with entries still flowing in-but a special appeal is made to local skiers. , Cliff McGinty, club secre tary, said that novice events are not often scheduled and that this is a good opportunity for area ski enthusiasts to enter competition. Those who want to test their water wings can pick up application blanks at Skinner's Buick - Cadillac agency. A crowd of about 1000 Is expected at Gardener Lake this week end to watch the motorized mermaids slide through slalom, trick, jump and speed skiing. A hoped-for 100 skiers will be in the competitive swim, with men's, women's and junior classes represented. Registration deadline is 7 a.m. Saturday. Entry fee for juniors (under 15) is $3 and for those over 15 it is $5. These amounts in clude insurance. A one-dollar admission fee has been placed for specta tors, with . 50 cents set for those under 18. Free admis sion will be made for those under 8 years. Among the aqua athletes already registered are Bill Barlow of Piedmont, Calif., men's 1959 Washington state trick champion; Lon Skinner of Medford, 1959 third place slalom winner in the Cali fornia state water ski cham pionship meet; and Wally Pal lack of San Francisco, 1957 58 senior men's division re gional champ, along with eight novices from his ski club. Miss Mazzuca, who has hurled several no-roun, no-hit games for the Florists this sea son, will face Bertha Ragan, ace pitcher for the Connecti cut club. Games are scheduled for both Friday and Saturday nights. The Brakettes will play the Florists July, 28, 29 and 31 at Portland's Normandale Park while on a tour of the West Coast. Florists Nab First Half Gals' Title Portland -(DPD- Pearl Pinion pitched the Erv Lind Florists to the first half title in the Northwest Women's Major softball league Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over the Salem Shamrocks at Farragut Park here. The three-hit triumph gave the Florists a perfect 10-0 rec ord. The Florists tallied twice in the sixth inning on a double, a triple, and a single to record the win. Salem scored in the seventh on a single and a pair of Florist errors.
