DDuren Murls Ymh Victory; CBiiDcago Traps Graves, 2L0-5 United Press International An 0-83 earned run average and a string of 31 13 consec utive scoreless innings stamp Ryne Duren today as the fel low who may yet save the New York Yankee's hide and pride. Casey Stengel called him "my guy" after Duren saved Tuesday night's 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians and it's obvious no Yankee manager ever has relied so heavily on a relief pitcher since Bucky Harris toasted Joe Page in wine and song back in 1947. No American league relief pitcher ever has won a most valuable player award but Duren could be the first to do so. His 1-2 won-lost record is completely deceptive, of 'course, because he is credited with eight "saves" and the way he is pitching he could wind up setting two new league records. With his string of consecu tive scoreless innings, Duren is getting into position to threaten Walter Johnson's 46-year-old record of 56 straight. And Ryne's current 0.83 e.r.a. is considerably lower than the 45-year-old league mark of 1.01 held by H. B. Dutch Leonard of the Boston Red . Sox. Protects One-Run Lead Duren did it again Tuesday night when Stengel hustled him out of the bullpen to pro tect the one-run Yankee lead which existed since the sec- : ond inning. Ryne faced eight men, walked one, allowed one hit and struck out three to protect Whitey Ford's first victory in three weeks and the ninth of the year. The victory braked the Yan kees' five-game losing streak and also enabled the Chicago White Sox to move within two percentage points of the In dians via their 7-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. The Balt imore Orioles beat the Kansas City Athletics, 3-1, after a 1-0 defeat and the Washington Senators downed the Detroit Tigers, 4-2, in the other A.L. games. , First place San Francisco was rained out in the Nation al league but neither of the two principal contenders The Chicago Cubs whipped the Milwaukee Braves, 10-5, and the Pittsburgh Pirates romped over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 9-1. The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds, 6-5, in 11 innings and ended Don Newcombe's eight game streak. Bobby Richardson, who had driven in only seven runs all season, singled home the only run . of the Yankee-Indian game off Herb Score in the second inning. Score had walked Elston Howard to start the Inning and the New ' York first-baseman went to second on an infield out. Pierce Squares Record Billy Pierce squared his record at 10-10 as the White Sox banged out 13 hits in cluding a homer by John Ro mano and a two-run single by red-hot rookie Jim McAnany Milt Pappas pitched a five hitter and drove in a run with a single to win his 10th game for Baltimore after Ray Her berts four-hitter bested Billy O'Dell for Kansas City in the first game of a twi-night dou- bleheader. Bob Allison hit his 23rd homer and Roy Sievers his 11th for the Senators as Pedro Ramos chalked up his 10th win. The Senators clinched the game with a three-run fourth-inning rally. Ernie Banks' double and pitcher Bill Henry's bases- filled single were the big blows of a four-run seventh inning rally that lifted the Cubs to their fifth win in 10 f meetings with the Braves. Winner Henry allowed only . two hits and one run over the last 5 13 innings.' Vera Law won his 10th game for the Pirates behind a 14-hit attack that included a triple by Bob Skinner and two doubles by Dick Groat. Johnny Podres was routed in the first inning by the Pirates who moved within 2Vfc games of first place. Joe Cunningham singled in the 11th inning for his fourth hit of the game to break up the 11-iining Cincinnati 'St. Louis game. Lindy McDaniel won his second game for the Cardinals while Newcombe ouiici cu ma mui ueieai com pared to nine triumphs. While Los Angeles remained lVz games behind first-place San Francisco, the Pirates strengthened their four-place spot and came within one game of the third-place Dodg ers. Drysdale, 10-6, who won in relief against the Braves in his last outing, seeks victory No. .11 tonight against Bob Friend, 4-10. The big right hander f or the Dodgers hurled three perfect innings against the American league nine in the All-Star game last week It was a disappointing re turn to action for Johnny Podres Tuesday night. Podres, sidelined by a bad back after holding the club together on its last road trip, didn't sur vive the first 4nning in the Pittsburgh game, After one man was retired, the Pirates banged out five hits in a row, including a dou ble by Dick Groat and triple by Bob Skinner. Dick Stuart, Roberto Clemente and Bill Mazeroski all singled. Five runs crossed the plate in the single inning Roger Craig was next in line for the Dodger pitching crew, and managed to get through five innings without further damage. He was lifted for pinch-hitter Ron Fairly in the sixth. The only Dodger run came in that sixth inning when Charlie Neal banged a double and Wally Moon singled him home. Giants, Phils Play Tonight Philadelphia-(UPD-Mike Mc Cormick, 8-7, who has shut out Philadelphia three times this season, takes the mound for the San Francisco Giants against the Phillies tonight. Rain, which has a habit of falling when the Giants arrive here, washed out Tuesday's scheduled twin bill. But the gloom of the night's rain was lessened considerably by the defeats handed to Los Angeles and Milwaukee. , As a result, the Giants in creased their lead to a game over the Braves and a game and a half over the Dodgers. The Pirates are only two and a half games out in fourth. The Giants will play a twi night double-header against the Phillies Thursday before moving to Pittsburgh where they will .play four games. After that they return home for a big set against the Dodgers. Schoendienst Hopes To Play By September St. Louis- (DPD -Red Schoen: dienst, who fought a success ful battle against tuberculosis, continued workouts today for his return to the Milwaukee Braves' lineup Sept. 1. , "I've been working out since the first of June and doing a little running," Schoendienst said Tuesday, "and I hope to start batting practice the beginning of August. I also have been throwing a ball around and it feels great." Schoendienst was found to have tuberculosis last Novem ber and was admitted to Mt. St. Rose hospital. In February he underwent surgery to have part of the diseased right lung removed. Dr. William A. Werner, Schoendienst's physician, said the operation hastened recov ery. 1 "Red thinks September first is the date and I agree," Wern er said, "and next year he might be able to play all sea son." The 3,6-year-old second base man said he would start swinging a bat with some minor league players here and possibly get the feel of County Stadium again. I might do a little batting practice with some minor league players in Milwaukee in August while ' the Braves are on the road," he said. Sikes Medalist In Golf Tourney Denver-(DPD-Dan Sikes Jr. is off to a better start in the National Public Links golf tournament than he was a year ago when he won the championship. Sikes, a 28-year-old law student at the University of Florida, became the tourney medalist ' Tuesday when he toured the 6-617-yard Well shire Municipal Course in 68 strokes, three under par. It gave him a two-day total of 137 over the 36 qualifying holes. The skinny Jacksonville, Fla., golfer won the 1958 title at Orland Park, 111., after barely surviving the qualify ing rounds. He, squeezed through an extra hole playoff, and went on to defeat Bob Ludlow of Indianapolis, Ind., 3 and 2, in the finals. Tuesday's medal rounds trimmed the field from 150 to 64 for the start of today's match rounds. Two rounds to day will trim. the field to 16. He has fought only 41 times during the decade, win ning 36 fights and losing 4. One ended in a' draw. Mims has faced such top notch fighters as Ray Robin son and Joey Giardello but is only a slight favorite to night because Benton's repu tation is higher than his rank ing.
