COSSETTE - .- In -the practice of GENERAL DENTISTRY 836 E. Main St. White Oak Lodge Site of Event Attended by 500 By A Mail Tribune Staff Writer In a secluded spot on hill side, overlooking a broad ex panse of green canyon in nothern Jackson county, some 500 members of the North west district of the American Sunbathing association gath ered last week for their an nual five-day regional con vention. Purpose of the conventions, held every year around the Fourth of July, is to elect of ficers for the coming year and conduct other business of the organization, as well as to compete in various athletic games and to just plain "loaf' in the sun all in the alto gether. , The convention this year was the largest ever held in the region which included the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, and at tracted sun bathers from as far as Los Angeles and north ern Alberta, Canada. The site of the gathering was White Oak lodge north of Trail, which has been a "going nudist club since 1951 . . . sanctioned by area law en forcement agencies and ac credited by the American Sun bathing association. 500 Guests The 500 guests, a good num ber of whom were children, for nudism is based on family participation, camped in tents or stayed 1 in trailer houses parked in a special area near the lodge. A few families stayed in the cabins on the premises. Laundry was no problem. The camp would remind one of any one of a number of southern Oregon resort areas, with people standing here and there talking or on their way for a soft drink or a swim. Children played table tennis or badminton or took turns on -a big rope swing, completely nude and without embarassment. Psychologically Capable Nudists believe that there is nothing indecent about the human body and that vulgar ity is only in the mind. They also claim that among teen-age members of nudist families, there are almost no records of deliquency. They accept the body as something perfectly natural and not an object of shame or subject of levity. They admit, however, that not everyone is psycho logically capable of becoming a nudist. At White Oak lodge, as other reputable nudist clubs, no alcoholic beverages are al lowed and rowdyism is strict ly out. Individuals are screened carefully before be ing admitted as members. Although single persons are allowed to join the or ganization, most of the mem bership is made up. of family groups. Married persons are not admitted without his or her spouse and children, if any. Annual membership dues amount to about $30 in most areas. Nudists are not necessarily "cranks" on the subject of health. They are not food f ad ists or physical culturists. They are just normal people that could be found in a cross section of most any commun ity. Form of Relaxation . " They look upon nudism more as a form of relaxation than as a "religion," for most fam ilies have their own faith, be ing Protestant, Catholic, Jews or others. A number of fam ilies in southern Oregon are avid sunbathers. On Saturday, July 4, many festivities were held at the camp, which included election of a king - and queen and prince and princess of the Northwest district. Volleyball, the official sport of the Na tional Sunbathing association, was played tournament style throughout the five-day ses sion, with various clubs in the area competing. Other activities included a beard contest and nightly musical entertainment pre sented by various delegates.
