Now is ; the time to launch daughter(s) of the house on cookie baking sprees. Praise from father on the very first batch and you'll have a cookie career girl on your hands and that will add to the summer fun for everyone. Cookies are the most dem ocratic of foods. They're migh ty nice to have around the house and they're good travel ers. They're enjoyed by every one t . , any hour of the day or evening. They're great with fresh fruits, berrjes, ice cream and many other desserts at meal time. They're perfect snacking food for all the fam ily; unsurpassed for offering friends and family who drop in. A variety of ready-to-eat cookies in the cookie jar and a few in the freezer are good ideas. Transparent plastic wrap assures good protection anywhere; lets you see exactly what's in the package ycu're f reaching for. Who could ask for anything more? . 1 cup soft shortening 1 Mi 'cups sugar 1 egg 9 ounce can crushed pine apple and juice (1 cup) 314 cups sifted flour 1 teaspoon soda Vz teaspoon salt . A teaspoon nutmeg . Vfe cup chopped walnuts Cream shortening and sugar together. Add egg and blend well. Add crushed pineapple ' and juice alternately with sifted dry ingredients Add walnuts. Chill dough for about one hour. Drop by teaspoon ful onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake in moder ately hot oven, 400 degrees, 8 to 10 minutes. Hang on to this recipe. Quick Cookies With Basic Mix A batch of home-made cook ies are just minutes away when you use a basic cookie mix readily found on any grocer's shelf along with oth er flour mixes. The same, mix Snakes famous chocolate crunch cookies studded with morsels of semi-sweet choco late, rolled cutout cookies and brownies. We give you recipe for Fies ta Shrimp with Pineapple by way of celebration of the new shrimp season. For each four servings: ' 1 pound shrimp, fresh or . frozen 1 flat can sliced pineapple Vz cup vinegar ' 2 tablespoons soy sauce IVi cups water 3 tablespoons cornstarch Vz green pepper, cut in strips Vi cup blanched slivered almonds Clean and cook shrimp. Drain syrup frpm pineapple into a sauce pan. Cut pineap ple slices in half and reserve. Add brown sugar, vinegar, soy sauce and one" cup water to pineapple syrup; bring to a boil. Combine cornstarch and re maining one-fourth cup water; add to syrup. Cook and stir until mixture boils and thick ens. Add green pepper, pine apple and almonds; cook two minutes. Add shrimp and cook to heat shrimp through. Serve immediately. Rice remains the perfect accompaniment for shrimp, .. Honeydew Melon Time The luscious, flavor -rich, honeydew melon originated in Persia; came to the states in 1900, attains highest perfec tion right here. Refrigerate as you do a cantaloupe. Wash, dry well ' and wrap in foil, transparent film wrap or plio film or in heavy brown paper bag before placing in refrigerator- Serve well chilled with wedge of, lime or lemon. Low in calories,' too. ' . ' Fluffy Berry Sauce For Dessert Pancakes , Use any of the fresh berries ior tnis super sauce tor pan cakes or waffles. For dessert pancakes, make 12 thin pan cakes in the usual manner, about four to six inches in diameter. Spread with putter or margarine, sprinkle with lemon juice and sugar; roll I each pancake as for jelly roll. Serve with fluffy berry sauce Fluffy Berry Sauce. Pick over two cups fresh berries. They see a blending of various fash ion ideas with the ultimate situation one in which it will be difficult to tell the British: French. Spanish. Italian or other national from an Amer ican. . This isn't going to happen overnight. For some time. you'll be able to distinguish the various : nationals. The start comes in the sport shirt which is an accepted U.S. custom. Until recently, sports gar ments produced in Europe were used primarily by the wealthy when they engaged in sports. They were not used for leisurewear as they are in the United States, according to Back. The standard of living being raised abroad, particu larly in Europe and Africa, more and more men will be increasing their wardrobes, says Back. "Previously, they only bought dress shirts. They are now buying leisurewear garments as well. This trend will increase tremendously." All this is going to mean more income for the produc ers of men's wear, it is held. As men conform more and more they aren't going to wear last year's lapels or shoulders. Good news for the textile busr iness which makes the goods that make the shirts, the'suits, the neckties and the hats that men will junk to buy new shirts, suits, neckties, and hats to conform with the other men of the world. And once this thing really gets, going, you won't be able to tell a stock broker in Wall Street from a plumber in Mil an or a pilot on the Suex Canal. .. Footprints Point To Camels in Southland Los Angeles-(Science Serv- ice)-Rare footprints of mam mals that lived many millions of years ago have been found high on the wall of a small canyon. The footprints - large and small camels, an antelope and several carnivores or meat eaters indicate the possi bility of a water-hole before the sands came. One of the prints shows a well-developed heel and could have been made by a bear-dog, Raymond M. Alf of the Webb School of California, Claremont, report ed here. It is very rare, he pointed out, to find . mammal foot prints from the geologic time scientists call the Tertiary period. This period, which saw the Age' of Mammals, began about 60,000,000 years ago and lasted until about 2,- 000,000 years ago. These footprints, found along the Avawatz mountains near Baker, are the first to be reported from the Mojave Desert. The search for more prints will continue to gain more knowledge of the am mals, climate and life in the Mojave Desert millions of years ago.
