Flying Fish Environments Prior To Birth Declared Important in Lives By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor Atlantic City, N. J. - (UPD -A panel of medical scientists heard it suggested that the things that can happen to people before birth might be the most important events of their lives. The suggestion was made by Dr. A. S. Norris of the State University of Iowa. When science knows more than it knows now, he said, the obstetrician will be able to practice preventive psy chiatry in behalf of the un born. In fact, he will be "the first line of defense against mental illness," Norris said. The panel discussion was a feature of the annual meet ing of the American Medical Association. It called atten tion to the usually ignored fact that we all live approxi mately nine months before our lives begin officially. Before-Birth Environments Norris thought it a pity science has paid so little at tention to the influen6es of people's before-birtb environ ments while making elabor ate studies of how after-birth environments mold people in to what they are, good and bad. He pointed to the situations in which before-birth environ ments rob after-birth environ ments of most if not all mold ing influence. Some human beings die before they are born. Others are born men tally or physically defective. The accent was en the bad, of course, because science is ignorant of the good which before - birth environments create beyond the fact that most people at birth are quite normal. The Little Which Is Known But people are born with astonishing endowments of body and mind, as well as with defects, and science has never been able to show heredity is the full explana tion. Norris's complaint basic ally was that the little which is known points to the im portance of happenings in the before - birth environments, and why don't scientists get more facts? He cited a number of ex amples. One was the ability of German measles in a wom an during the first three months of pregnancy to so change, the environment of the unburn child that it could be born mentally deficient -or blind. For hard-pressed poultry men, the report brought no comfort. Egg prices on May 15 were down nearly 11 per cent from the previous month. Broiler prices also dropped. Average poultry and egg prices were at the lowest level in 18 years. it's here . . . the Shelton Stroller for Suite v MEDFORD uSJUMMEUmME VALUES" ElfidPM MEBFQMB'S COMPLETE .
