Car Overheats Firemen were sumomned to the 600 block of 'South Ivy st. about 10:30 a jn. yesterday when a car fire was reported. They said .that there .was no , fire and no damage and that a car owned by Harmon Tobler, no address learned, had just overheated. An odor of gas was reported about 3 p.m. yesterday at the Craterian theater but firemen investi gating found no odor of gas or evidence of. gas escaping. CRUSADER DIES New York - Charles Culp Burlingham, 100, one of New York's leading crusaders for civic reform, died Saturday night after a short illness. A lawyer, he played a major part in the election of reform Mayors John Purroy Mitchel and Fiorello H. LaGuardia. London - (UPD - The conven tion of licensed victualers pub keepers who are licensed to serve food - adjourned for lunch to a pub across the street. Eight members came down with food poisoning. Obituaries MILDRED R. BONER Mildred R. Boner of Ana cortes, Wash., died yesterday in a local hospital. Arrange ments will be announced by Conger-Morris Funeral home. JODIE D. LAFEVER Jodie Dean LaFever, two months -old son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry L. LaFever, of Central Point, died yesterday in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at Con ger - Morris Funeral home Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Bruce Weber, Central Point First Presbyterian church, will officiate. Com mittal will be in Hillcrest Memorial park. The baby was born March 31, 1959, in Medford, and sur vivors besides the parents in clude the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry LaFever, Cen tral Point; and Harvey Mit chell, Ft. Bragg, Calif. MRS. MILDRED B. SMITH Private funeral services were held today at the Perl Funeral home at 1:30 p.m. for Mrs. Mildred Beebe Smith, 78, of rt. 2, box 412, Medford, who died Thursday in a local hospital. The Rev. Thomas McCamant of Congregational church, officiated, and the in terment was in the Siskiyou Crematorium. Mrs. Smith was born in Calmar, Iowa, on July 27, 1880 and had been a resident of this community for the past nine years. Survivors include one daughter, Miss Elizabeth Smith, Medford, one son, Robert Smith; two nephews, Robert L. Baldock of Los An geles, Calif, and Fredrick Bal dock of Pittsburgh, Pa. RALPH IRWIN HILKEY Services for Ralph I. Hil key, 61, of Rockaway, who died there Thursday, will be held in, the Conger - Morris Funeral home Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Rev. William C. Piper, First Christian church, will officiate. Committal will be in Siskiyou Memorial park. Mr. Hilkey was born Oct. 29, 1897, in Missouri, and married on April 13, 1918, in Phoenix to Miss Ethel Tol bert, who survives. He came to this valley from Colorado in 1914 and left this area in 1942. He had lived in Rock-; away for six years. Surviving besides the wife are two daughters, Mrs. Allen Clark, Cascade Locks, Ore., and Mrs. Willie Jones, Cen tral Point; four brothers, John H. Hilkey, Otis Hilkey, and Glenn Hilkey, all Portland, and Howard Hilkey, Eastern, Ore.; two sisters, Mrs. L. O. Geppert, Butte Falls, and Mrs. Grayden Klepper, Campbell, Calif.; and 7 grandchildren. One son Irwin, preceded him in death. ROBERT J. HENRY. Services for Robert Jeffer son Henry, 58, of 285 High st., Ashland, who died Thurs day, will be held in the Ash land Mortuary chapel, Fourth and C sts.; Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Committal will be in Mountain View cemetery, with Ashland lodge, AF & AM in charge of graveside serv ices. .Mr. Henry was born Oct. 17, 1907, in Oklahoma. He was married July 31, 1931, in Oklahoma City to Doris Clark, who survives. He came to Malin, Ore., in 1938 from Oklahoma and owned and operated a ranch there until moving to Ashland in 1955. He was a member of Masonic lodge in Verden, Okla. Survivors besides his wife include his mother, Mrs. Em ma Henry, Verden, Okla.; two brothers, Paul Henry, Los Angeles, and Cpl. Frank Henry, Ft. Lewis, Wash.; three sisters, Mrs. Jean Spears, Modesto, Calif.; and Mrs. Sereda Curland and Mrs. Lindy Hembree, both Los Angeles. GARY JOHNSON Services for Gary Johnson, 22, of Grants Pass, who was killed in an automobile acci dent Saturday, will be held in the Hope Presbyterian church, Rogue River, Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Rev. Mr. Johnson was born Oct. 13, 1936, in Medford and married on June 29. 1956, at Rogue River to Miss Mar garet Miller, who survives. Rooney may run into some legal complications because of his announcement that he and Barbara were married in, Mexico before his former, wife's divorce became final. Helicopters Refuel Here During Week End Two Army helicopters, both with d ouble rotary blades, stopped at the Medford air port Sunday for refueling. The helicopters, traveling in dividually, arrived here at noon and approximately 2:30 pjn., it was reported. Desti nation of. crafts was not known locally. This is the second time within four days that Army helicopters have used the lo cal airport for refueling, oper ations. Thursday five helicop ters, four with double rotary blades, stopped here. COOPER Herbert Henry Cooper, 72, died this morning at his home in Gold Hill. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Conger-Morris Funeral home. State Police Office Open 24 Hours Daily The Medford district office of the Oregon State police is open 24-hours, 7-days a week, local state police officers re minded residents today. It was reported that the of fice had received calls lately from residents who believed that state police assistance was only available 40 hours a week and that the office was closed at night. Local officials explained that the t misunderstanding might have been due to recent state legislation putting state patrolman on a 40-hour week. This legislation will not change the operating hours of the state police force, it was reported. CATHOLIC DEAN DIES New York - Msgr. Michael P. O'Shea, 61, pastor of St. Peter's Church in Poughkeep sie, N.Y., and dean of the Ro man Catholic Church in Dut chess and Putnam Counties, died Saturday. The bite caused bleeding but did not require stitches, it was reported. Police said two dogs, a box er and a part-husky, part-German shepherd, chased Carson and the husky-shepherd bit him. The boxer had nipped him on a previous occasion, according to the report. The incident reportedly occurred at the intersection of East wood dr. andKeene Way dr. The dogs belong to Fred Allen Wetnerly, 62 South Keene Way dr., police reported. Six Youths Arrested On Liquor Charges . Six Grants Pass teen-agers received $35 fines each in Medford municipal court this morning on charges of illegal possession of intoxicating bev erages. They were reportedly ar rested Friday night on South Central ave., at Boyd st. Among those fined were Darrell John Deters, 19, and Stewart William Morrow, 18. Another' boy, 17, and three girls-two 17 and one 16-also were charged and fined after Jackson county juvenile au thorities, according to police, declined to take action. Log Jam Causes Boat To Capsize in Rogue C. H. Hollis and . his son, Charles, both of 510 Mae st., Medford, escaped injury early Sunday morning when their boat captized in the Rogue river above the McLeod bridge. ' . According to Charles Hol lis the boat caught on a log jam in the river shortly after they started fishing, causing the boat to captize in the swift current. The two men, both wear ing life jackets, managed to reach shore but lost both the boat and their fishing gear. Broomfield, Robbins and two passengers in Robbins' cab escaped appreciable ' in jury, according to the report.
