Local and Chimney Fir City fire men were dispatched to a flue fire about 9:15 p.m. Saturday at the home of Elzie W. Roberts. Father Diet E. John Rossi, 919 Whitman ave., has left for Virginia, Minn., to attend funeral services Tuesday for hig father. He said he expect ed to return here in about one week. Has Surgery - Curt Nes heim, southwest district war den for the Oregon state de partment of forestry, under went surgery this morning at Rogue Valley hospital. He is to be absent from his forestry duties for the rest of this week. , Pulled Into Car - An un identified man pulled a 16- year-old Medford girl into his car on Ivy st. between Main and Eighth sts. Sunday after noon, drove her eastward out of the city and finally re leased her unharmed at the junction of Barnett and Hill- crest-Phoenix rds., according to Medford police. Meeting - American Legion Post, Ashland, will honor past commanders at a dinner at 7 pjn. Tuesday, April 14, at the Ashland American Legion hall. The dinner will precede the business meeting. During the business meeting reports will be given including one by the nominating commit tee. Tractor Damaged - Charles Ernest Bennett, 820 Marshall ave., informed Medford po lice Sunday afternoon of dam age to his tractor-loader over the week end while it was parked on the west bank of Bear creek behind the' 800 block of North Riverside ave. The air-breather was damaged, dirt was placed in the fuel tank and grease was smeared on various parts of the ve hicle, according to the report. Shrubs Taken -Gordon Willis Conrad, 3286 New Ray, Central Point, told Medford police Sunday afternoon that three boxwood shrubs worth $3 had been taken the night before from the premises of the Bethel Assembly of God church, 1225 East McAndrews rd. - Car Fire Entire motor of a car owned and operated by Oliver Morton, Old Military rd., was damaged by fire yes terday, city firemen said. Paint on the hood and fenders was scorched. The fire broke out in the 1200 block of South Riverside ave. and apparent ly originated from wiring, firemen stated. Commissioner Frank Van Dyke this morning on a fed eral grand jury indictment from Denver, Colo., for the theft of nine automobiles. He was also arraigned on a complaint from Oklahoma City. Okla., for the theft of another car, it was reported. Bail was set at 55,000 on the Denver indictment with $1,500 on the other complaint. Matchetti waived the right to a preliminary hearing and vJill be returned to Denver. Local Charge The local man was arrested April 5 by Phoenix and state police on a burglary charge. He had pleaded guilty in dis trict court to removing furni ture and miscellaneous ar ticles from the Southern Or egon Trailer Mart north of Phoenix earlier this month. Local federal authorities arrested Rudd Folarich, 35, of Veterans Domiciliary, Camp White, April 9 as a condi tional release violator on a warrant from the board of paroles, Washington, D. C. Authorities reported that he would be returned to the court from which he was originally sentenced on a charge of forging and cash ing checks. Both men are being held in the county jail for the U. S marshal. James Gleason Of Stage Fame Dies Hollywood-dTD-James Glea son, who rollicked and wise cracked his way across the na tion's stages and screen for all but two months and a cou ple of Army hitches of his 72 years, died Sunday night. The veteran actor under went surgery last December and went to the motion pic ture home in the San Fernan do valley to convalesce. - Gleason, whose family tree was liberally sprinkled with stage celebrities, came into the world in the proverbial theater trunk in New York on May 23, 1886. His wife, Lucille, died in 1947. Russell Gleason, the cou ple's only child, plunged to his death from the fourth floor of a New York hotel while attached to the Army Signal corps in 1945. Roseburg Man Dies In Auto Collision Cottage Grove - (UPD - State police today were investigat ing an accident which killed one man and hospitalized six others in a two-car accident south of here Saturday night. Killed was LeRoy Junior Dypr, 38, of Roseburg, the driver of one car. One of the occupants of the second car involved remained in "critical" condition at a hospital here Sunday night, according to attendants. She was identified as Shirley Mae Peterson, 18, of Junction City. Car Thief Should Learn How To Drive New York -(UPD- Donald J. Hickey was first picked up about 4:35 a.m. Saturday for a routine check by a Medford policeman who observed him driving along a downtown street with another man and a woman in the car. He was arrested after in terrogation for violating a city ordinance by being out after hours. He pleaded guilty to that offense in municipal court this morning and re ceived a five-day sentence. Hickey was arrested at the police station after the court action today, in connection with the theft of a car from Huffman's used car lot on Ohio st., police reported. Hickey told police in a sign ed statement that he had spent most of Friday in a tavern on North Riverside ave., . before going to the used car lot. It was his birthday. Progress Reported In Shortage Study Salem - (UPD - The emer gency Transportation Com mittee appointed by Gov. Mark Hatfield to study a pos sible railroad car shortage in Oregon this summer reported "gratifying progress" in an all - day meeting Saturday with representatives of major railroads serving the state. Chairman R. J. Hogue, Med ford lumberman, said the committee approved a plan calling on shippers and re ceivers of freight to expedite efficiency in loading and of fered other suggestions to avoid a "tight-car situation." The .committee criticized the car service rules of the Association of American, rail roads, which controls the al location of various types of cars throughout the country. The dead were Terri Lee Jones, 20 months, and her 6-month-old brother, Allen Da vid Jones. The mother, Jlrs. Maleeta Lynn Jones, 20, suf fered second and third degree burns over one third of her body. Authorities said the father, David A. Jones, attempted to save the children by smash ing the windows of the burn ing one-story frame structure. He was brought to a hospi tal here in deep shock and treated for severe wrist and hand cuts. Washington - (UPD Rep. Richard E. Lankford (D-Md.) has proposed that former fed eral employees be given pref erence when 200,000 persons are hired to take the I960 census. Obituaries BERT L. COOK Ashland -Funeral services for Bert Lawrence Cook, 65, of 493 Siskiyou blvd., who died Saturday, will be held Tuesday, April 14, at 2:30 p.m. at Litwiller's Mountain View chapel. The Elks lodge in Ashland will be in charge with interment in Mountain View cemetery. Mr. Cook was born Aug. 17, 1893, in Lostine, Ore., and moved to Ashland in 1928. He married Florence White, who survives March 3, 1937. He was a member of Elks lodge, Ashland. He. has been in failing health since December, 1958. Other survivors include two children, Wilda Cook, Los tine, and Wesley Cook, Springfield, Ore., and seven grandchildren. ALBERT F. LEHMAN Albert F. SHUCK HOOTS Services for Harold David Shuck Hoots, 22, who died Saturday, will be held in the Ashland Mortuary chapel, Fourth and C sts., Ashland, Wednesday at 10 a.m. The Rev. E. E. Crawford of the Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Committal will be in Mountain View cemetery. Mr. Hoots was born July 26, 1936, in Moline, 111. He was formerly married to Shir ley Hoots. He attended Ash land High school, was gradu ated in 1954, and was active in athletics. He served with the U.S. Navy from March 21, 1956, to Dec. 23, 1957, and was a member of Laborers' Union, Local 1400. He hed re cently moved to Medford. - Survivors include his step father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. James B. Hoots, Ashland; his father, Harold D. Shuck, Highland, Calif.; two chil dren, Steven James Hoots and Michael William Hoots, both of Medford; a brother, Robert Shuck, Medford; his grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Mrs. Sutherlin. was born April 2, 1868, in Italy, Texas, and was married on Nov. 29, 1893, in Texas to William H. Sutherlin who preceded her in death in 1942. Mrs. Sutherlin came from Oklahoma in 1921 to Lakeview and then moved to Medford in 1924. She had been a member of the Chris tian church since she was 15 years old. Survivins are four sons. S. A. Sutherlin, Medford; L. R. Sutherlin. Hudson. Ind.; H. F. Sutherlin, Willowbrook, Calif.; and J. E. Sutherlin of Selma, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. A. B. Holt and Mrs. Alma Matthews, both Central Point, and 'Mrs. Eldec Lacy and Miss Ruth Sutherlin, both Medford: also several grand children; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The local drive-in will be one of five scheduled to be constructed in Oregon cities. The company was reported to be currently .negotiating for locations and operators throughout the state. President of the chain, Thomas A. Anderson, estimat ed each drive-in will represent an investment of approximate ly $100,000. Each building in the chain has a Vermillion roof which slopes to the ground and is topped by a 21 foot golden spire.
