was arraigned before U. S.

Dyke this morning on a fed
eral grand jury indictment
from Denver, Colo., for the
theft of nine automobiles.
He was also arraigned on a
complaint from Oklahoma
City. Okla., for the theft of
another car, it was reported.
Bail was set at 55,000 on
the Denver indictment with
$1,500 on the other complaint.
Matchetti waived the right
to a preliminary hearing and

The local man was arrested
April 5 by Phoenix and state

Of Stage Fame Dies

cracked his way across the na
tion's stages and screen for
all but two months and a cou
ple of Army hitches of his 72
years, died Sunday night.
The veteran actor under
went surgery last December
and went to the motion pic
ture home in the San Fernan
do valley to convalesce. -
Gleason, whose family tree
was liberally sprinkled with
stage celebrities, came into
the world in the proverbial
theater trunk in New York
on May 23, 1886.
His wife, Lucille, died in
1947.
Russell Gleason, the cou
ple's only child, plunged to
his death from the fourth
floor of a New York hotel
while attached to the Army
Signal corps in 1945.

was held in Medford jail to
day on a charge of grand lar
ceny in connection with the
theft of a car from a used
car lot Friday evening, Med
ford police reported.
Hickey was first picked up
about 4:35 a.m. Saturday for
a routine check by a Medford
policeman who observed him
driving along a downtown
street with another man and
a woman in the car.
He was arrested after in
terrogation for violating a
city ordinance by being out
after hours. He pleaded guilty
to that offense in municipal
court this morning and re
ceived a five-day sentence.
Hickey was arrested at the
police station after the court
action today, in connection
with the theft of a car from
Huffman's used car lot on
Ohio st., police reported.
Hickey told police in a sign
ed statement that he had spent
most of Friday in a tavern on
North Riverside ave., . before
going to the used car lot. It
was his birthday.

railroads serving the state.

committee approved a plan
calling on shippers and re
ceivers of freight to expedite
efficiency in loading and of
fered other suggestions to
avoid a "tight-car situation."
The .committee criticized
the car service rules of the
Association of American, rail
roads, which controls the al
location of various types of
cars throughout the country.

Authorities said the father,
David A. Jones, attempted to
save the children by smash
ing the windows of the burn
ing one-story frame structure.
He was brought to a hospi
tal here in deep shock and
treated for severe wrist and
hand cuts.

died Saturday, will be held

View chapel. The Elks lodge
in Ashland will be in charge
with interment in Mountain
View cemetery.
Mr. Cook was born Aug. 17,
1893, in Lostine, Ore., and
moved to Ashland in 1928.
He married Florence White,
who survives March 3, 1937.
He was a member of Elks
lodge, Ashland.
He. has been in failing
health since December, 1958.
Other survivors include two
children, Wilda Cook, Los
tine, and Wesley Cook,
Springfield, Ore., and seven
grandchildren.

Mr. Hoots was born July

ated in 1954, and was active
in athletics. He served with
the U.S. Navy from March 21,
1956, to Dec. 23, 1957, and
was a member of Laborers'
Union, Local 1400. He hed re
cently moved to Medford. -

Mrs. James B. Hoots, Ashland;
his father, Harold D. Shuck,

home of her daughter, 123
Kenwood ave., will be held
Wednesday at 10 a.m., in the
Conger-Morris funerpl home.
The Rev. William C. Piper of
thp First Christian church
will officiate. Committal will
be in Siskiyou Memorial park.
Mrs. Sutherlin. was born
April 2, 1868, in Italy, Texas,
and was married on Nov. 29,
1893, in Texas to William H.
Sutherlin who preceded her in
death in 1942. Mrs. Sutherlin
came from Oklahoma in 1921
to Lakeview and then moved
to Medford in 1924. She had
been a member of the Chris
tian church since she was 15
years old.
Survivins are four sons. S.
A. Sutherlin, Medford; L. R.
Sutherlin. Hudson. Ind.; H. F.
Sutherlin, Willowbrook,
Calif.; and J. E. Sutherlin of
Selma, Calif.; four daughters,
Mrs. A. B. Holt and Mrs.
Alma Matthews, both Central
Point, and 'Mrs. Eldec Lacy
and Miss Ruth Sutherlin, both
Medford: also several grand
children; great-grandchildren
and great-great-grandchildren.
Two sons and one infant
daughter preceded her in
death.

National Chain to

The Golden Hamburger
Drive-in corporation, a new
national chain with headquar
ters in Chicago, has announc
ed that they will construct a
drive-in in Medford this year.
The local drive-in will be
one of five scheduled to be
constructed in Oregon cities.
The company was reported to
be currently .negotiating for
locations and operators
throughout the state.
President of the chain,
Thomas A. Anderson, estimat
ed each drive-in will represent
an investment of approximate
ly $100,000. Each building in
the chain has a Vermillion
roof which slopes to the
ground and is topped by a 21
foot golden spire. Exteriors
are of porcelain enameled
steel and will be lighted at
night by floodlights.
