48 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Wednesday, April 8, 1959 New Construction Material Featured in Men's Sportswear As bracing as a Spring tonic in the 1959 range of mascu line sportswear. In addition to colorful good looks, these gar ments for fun and leisure also boast new construction fea tures for greater comfort and ease. And greater use of "sci ence" fibers in the fabrics makes for easier care says the American Institute of Men's and Boys' Wear. A quick run-down of what's new for and in tune with 1959 starts with sports jackets, fashioned in lighter-than-ever wool fabrics, wash-wear cot tons, man-made fabrics, or blends of any or all of these. All are designed for that basic consideration: to keep cool in the hottest weather, and to look smart and crisp at all times. Rang of Jackets As for the good looks, the jackets range all the way from the traditional blazers in solid colors, to bold checks and kingsized plaids. The muted tones of India madras are also in favor. Fans of wool will find light weight hopsacking weaves at tractive, while other men will prefer thes leekness and soph istication of silk coats. Flannel blazers never go out of style, and this year will be found in solid colors, stripes, and again solids with contrasting piping. ' The same variety and ap ' peal are to be found in the range of sports slacks, with Ivy models heading the list for many. Some of these feature back-flap pockets, English-inspired self-supporting beltless slacks, and the new-as-tomor-row "Continentals" which are distinguished by their single pleat cut, slim lines, polo pockets and side tabs, among other features. The growing demand for wash-wear slacks brings about a greater variety of them than ever. There are even wash wear, f eatherlight flannel slacks this year, ready to wear after laundering and drip-drying. Other models include slacks with that now-familiar iridescent sheen effect and a great variety of patterned types that go with solid col- Cavitation Used By Boating Fans Cavitation is a frequently used word in boating circles, and just as frequently misun derstood. Cavitation is the condition when a propeller races ineffi ciently like an automobile tire spinning on ice. This occurs in soft water caused by air pock ets, motor gases or turbulence caused by an under-the-boat obstruction. Improper outboard motor set-up can cause cavitation. The commonest reasons are the motor being tilted too far from the transom or the motor too high on the transom. It's a safe prediction that more men will turn- out in walking shorts this year than ever, with Bermuda lengths or slightly longer versions get ting the preference. Sweaters continue to enjoy their great revival, with cardi gans among the standouts. These feature button-up fronts among other styles, and are woven in lightweight wools, "science" yarns and cottons or blends. Crew-necked bulky knits are showing in great pro fusion this Spring, along with V-neck styles, all in a range of colors and patterns that are open invitation to the leisure life. Beachwear for 1959 is high lighted by a range of knit briefs, elasticized shorts, mid length boxer shorts and the new, long-legged surf riders. As complements, cabana sets are available in great variety, with matching shirts and trunks in terry cloth and other cottons. With Classic styling, brought up-to-date through the use of in teresting fabrics and colors, marks sportswear this spring. Among the most popular of the classics is the "separate" shirtwaist, composed of a matching blouse and skirt. Many outfits center around versatile jackets, from waist to hip-bone length, with easy Chanel - influenced lines, soft collars and, often, double breasted detailing and dolman sleeve treatments. They ap pear in a wide range of fab rics, including pique, linen and Provincial prints, and may be worn over skirts, pants and dresses. As an alternative to classics, the modified empire line has been adapted to casual fash ions through optical illusions that suggest the silhouette without actually indenting un der the bosom. High tabs, but tons and yoke interest are the chief devices. Spotlight Blouses The importance of both cas ual suits and skirt-and-jacket combinations has focused a lot of attention on blouses. There are both no-show and fill-in necklines, many soft bows and draped scarf treatments, cum merbund and self belt effects and raised waistline detailing. Overblouses in waist-length, hipbone length and in-or-out types share popularity with tuck-in styles. Both overblous es and blousons are often co ordinated with skirts, pants ic Style and shorts. Colors range from vivid to white, with delicate tone-on- tones looking especially new, Prints include hand-screened and warp-type silks. Sweaters Look Two Ways Sweaters tend to be either very long or very short. At one extreme is the loose chem ise sweater, around 21 inches. In. contrast are short jackets and boleros reaching just to the midriff. Among the new fabrics are a wider-than-ever range of rugged blends and wash-and- wear types. Old favorites have been fancied up, such as terry decorated with gold threads and "hot" plaids in off-beat iridescent colorings. Prints include native ba tiks, abstracts and lots of stripes. THEY'RE REVERSIBLE "Reversible" is an impor tant trend in new coats and jackets. Solid color on one side, print . on another is a popular turnabout effect. Oth er reversibles offer a quick change from color to color and from fabric to fabric. Gowns Have New Ideas for Charm Gowns for the spring bride combine traditional influ ences with new - ideas for freshness and charm. High empire waists are marked by bows, bands or sashes, often in contrasting pastel shades. Lace, floral ap pliques, seed pearl and crystal headings are also used to em phasize an empire bodice. Silhouettes range from dome shapes to styles with flat fronts and side fullness. Carriage skirts with bouffant backs and fan skirts with soft waistline pleating are other choices. Many skirts are slightly raised in front, with court trams in back. Period influences include high - rising Regency backs and trains, Watteau panels and Victorian self-roses and bustle - back effects. Sleeves are usually never longer than elbow length. Among the favored fabrics are Chantilly lace, taffeta, ny lon chiffon and nylon tulle, peau de soie and satin. Sheer fabrics, such as organdy, are often embroidered with all over floral patterns or feature all-over lace appliques. PLACEMENT - Created for dramatic placement on high rise silhouettes is mobile pendant pin, combining irides cent cabochon topaz stones with aurora borealis. Bracelet and drop earrings blend with pin. All by Coro. New Textures Join Stockings Fashion Growing interest in new textures joins the continued trend to color, to create fash ion news in stockings for spring. Shades range from pale bis que tones and. pastel mists to dark off - blacks. Stockings may have only a whisper of a tint or come in such hues as deep, rich blue or bright pink. These are colors to com plement just about every fashion shade, including greens, lilacs, golds, apricots, grays and beiges. Some are treated so as to give a fragile glow to the leg. Textured sheers with a 16 ok of lace are sometimes remin iscent of the early Thirties. Among other textured stock ings are those with a very fine rib effect, shadowy check and tweed patterns in such two -t one combinations a s beige-brown and gray-white, and honeycomb weaves. Many come in seamless styles. It's not always necessary to match hose to costume colors. More striking effects may be achieved by wearing dark stockings with white, pale stockings with bright colors and adventurous shades with prints. CHECKED FOR SPRING Checks form the most im portant fabric design for spring. There's great varia tion in size and color. Promi nent are black, brown, red or navy with white. CUTAWAY LIKED A modified cutaway line -high in front, dipping slightly lower in back - is liked for easy suits. Wide belts for dresses and suits f611ow the same line. Phoenix Korse Club To Present Show The Phoenix Horse club will .present a horse show both Saturday and Sunday after noons at the Crater Lions Sportsfair this .week end at the Medford Armory. Starting time for each show will be 2 p.m. Ribbons to be presented by the Phoenix 4-H club have been donated by the Crater Lions. Arabian and native costume will add to the event at the fair. Divisions competing will include three and five gaited horses, English, parade horses, Appaloosas in Indian costume, reigning stock horses, hack ney ponies and combination horses. Janet Young, president, said there will also be a halter showmanship class and dem onstrations on horse groom ing and the western pleasure. Both young people and adults will compete in the show.
