Spring Topcoats Make Style News This Year SDrine toDCoats - lighter than ever in weight, but just as warm as the heavier vers ions of past seasons are making style news right now. These new topcoats weigh scarcely more than a Spring suit, yet they give all the warmth needed in nippy weather, hold their shape ' well, and many boast a built in resistance to wrinkling. The new styling also fea tures shorter lengths this Spring. And there are new colors and shades that give the latest models a truly new look. Newest Models Among the newest models is an adaptation of the split raglan style that is now seen so much in rainwear. They're tailored for a set-in sleeve effect when seen from the front, while having the easy fitting raglan sleeve look at the back. . Designers of the new short er length coats indicate they will prove to be a boon on car-driving occasions or for men who do a lot of walking. Lengths have beep shortened by as much as three inches in some models. Aside from its practical features, the. new length boasts what the design ers call "better balance" in appearance. Variety of Fabrics But whatever length is to be preferred, topcoats for this Spring will be found in a superb variety of fabrics, in cluding silky gabardines, lux urious Shetland s, rugged tweeds, durable covert cloths and classic polos. "Ivy" styles are also much in evidence, including models that feature natural shoulders and sweeping raglan lines. Prints Assist Lingerie Look Interesting colors and prints and feminine trims help to make lingerie look very fresh and pretty this spring. Flowers "bloom" every where. Floral accents are em broidered on pastel slips, peig noirs and sleepwear, while flowery prints team with har monizing solid colors for a new look in sleep sets. These prints are character ized by a delicate air, inspired by Oriental watercolors or English gardens. Other prints are bright and bold, sometimes with an opal escent effect. They include over-blown blossoms, space prints over pigment white stripes and scattered fruits in flat black outlined technique. All are effective designs for dusters, on glazed or plain percales or cotton satins. Embossed cottons and flock ed and printed nylon sheers for robes make use of such new ideas as allover lace ef fects and patterns that sug gest Swiss applique. Baby doll pajamas appear in flowery cottons. with lacy accents. Flaring trapeze skirts stem from high waistlines and bustline borders in gathers, tiers or bias cut styles. They are often topped by very short coats. Bustlines continue to be ac centuated on waltz and full length gowns, though they usually have ribbon belts, midriffs and piping at the natural waistline. Spring Suits Give Endorsement to Checks in Fashion Creating fashion excitement in new shades and silhouettes, spring suits give a special endorsement to checks. In all sizes from mammoth to min ute, and in all colors, checks enliven a variety of styles, and bid fair to make the checked suit one of spring's favorite ideas. Among the new shapes of fered, in checks and, of course, solids and other prints, are the' suit with short (just below the waistline) and lightly fitted packet, the suit with the short-short (rib cage length) jacket, and the demi fitted costume suit with mat ching blouse and jacket lin ing. Looking especially new is the suit with fitted jacket, now making a comeback by popular demand. A compromise silhouette is the fitted-effect suit jacket, which indents slightly at the waistline and has a belt or half-belt. Leather belts return as an important part of many suits, and fur trimmings put in a spring-suit appearance. Heightened Waistline Extremely high-waisted ef fects are bypassed in favor of jackets that hint at a height ened waistline through belt ing, seaming or gathers. Variations in fit are con fined mostly to jackets, which range from easy and unfitted through semi-fitted .to fitted. Skirt silhouettes generally agree on slim and smooth-fit ting lines, with a pretty mi nority of pleated skirts and skirts softly gathered at the waistline. When it comes to color, eve rything goes! And, in a season bright with color, the neutrals - navy, beige, gray, black -hold an unusually strong posi tion.
