Friday. April 3, 1939 7 MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. . Piciorial History Of Area Published By GP Instructor A new booklet, "The Pic torial History of Southern 0 Oregon and Northern Cali fornia," has been prepared by a Grants Pass history teach er. Jack Sutton, and published by the Grants Pass Bulletin. The 100-page booklet is a condensation of the writer's original pictorial history, "The State of Jefferson." It begins with a brief pre - ice age description of the area, followed by descriptions of the ice-age and early geo graphic changes in the Pa cific coast. Sutton's pictures and draw ings describe early Pacific area Indians, the arrival of the white man, the Indian wars and the history of state government. Author's Explanations All the book's illustrations are accompanied by the auth or's explanations. It ends with a map of the area "in tended to serve as an addi tional aid in determining central points from which side trips may be taken to the more remote regions covered by the text." Copies are available at the Jacksonville museum and will also be on sale later in Med ford, Grants Pass and Cave Junction. In the process of prepara tion for a number of years, the booklet was undertaken because of the lack of avail able material for classroom use, according to the Southern Oregon Historical society. The few books devoted to this area have been out of print for many years. ' Sutton decided to produce the material in a paper-backed volume, which would fall within the limited budget range of schools using it as a supplementary history text. Rain Probability Forecasts Found To Be Successful Chicago-Science Service) Weather forecasts that include a percentage figure stating the chances of rain have : proved very successful, Jack C. Thompson of the U.S. Weather Bureau, Washington, D. C, reported to the Ameri can Meteorological Society meeting here. j He said the added informa tion, tried experimentally in San Francisco and Los An geles, was aimed at helping people make the best use of a weather forecast. Attached to the usual prediction is a phrase like the following: "Rain probability 40 per cent today, 80 per cent to night, 30 per cent tomorrow." Results of the experiments indicate many persons are highly in favor of this kind of prediction. A public survey of the Los Angeles area indi cated a response of 75 to one for continuing to include the percentage rainfall chances in daily weather forecasts. The replies also showed a good un derstanding of the wording of such forecasts. Thompson said similar fa vorable reactions have been received from other parts of the country where quantita tive probability predictions have been issued for those concerned with making agri cultural and business de cisions. Studies show, Thompson re ported, that important econ omic savings can be achieved through the use of the infor mation provided by probabil ity forecasts.
