Senior Center Orchestra Slates First Group Meeting Thursday Tht Senior Center orches tra will hold its first meeting at 1 pjn. Thursday, March 12, at the Senior Activity Center, 601 Jackson st., Center offic ials have announced. The orchestra is being con ducted by Edwin Root, form er music director for Jackson county schools, who is organ izing the group as part of the leisure time program at the ing heard reports from the committees and plans for fu ture activities at a meeting last week. Mrs. Fred Rankin, member of the state council, which will meet in Salem March 14, discussed the interest of other communities in the success of the volunteer center being conducted here. Earhart of the health committee reported that 45 men and women have now joined the Friendly Visit ing Corps, which held its sec ondt raining session Feb. 25, New volunteers have been as signed nursing homes to visit and are scheduled to visit them this week. Mrs. Earhart said more volunteers are needed from Medford and Ashland. The board voted to close the Activity Center Fridays except for special meetings so members may attend soc ial meetings of the 50 Plus club which meets each Fri day at the Episcopal church Guild hall. Frank Glonning, chaiman, recommended the council work toward larger facilities so social club activities of the Center could be centralized. He suggested a location where park facilities could be devel oped for outdoor activities in summer weather. Employees Seek More Adequate Facilities More adequate sanitation facilities are being sought for various county shops, accord ing to six resolutions submit ted to the county court by the Jackson County Employees as sociation Friday. More adequate toilet facili ties are requested for road de partment shops on Barnett rd., at Gold Hill, Applegate, Eagle Point, Ashland and in the weed control shops on Barnett rd. Salem-(UPD-A bill to permit legislators to be reimbursed for expenses incurred by them in serving at the Legislature has been introduced in the House. Medford's Bargain Center Sixth and Central ROBERT RUCKER Named Local Agent Local Man Named Insurance Agent' Robert Rucker, 25 Quince st., Medford, has been named local agent for the Oregon Funeral Insurance Agency, Inc., Portland, William A. Kummer, manager of the agency, has announced. The company is devoted to writing funeral insurance, and has been endorsed by the Ore gon Funeral Directors associ ation, members of which may hold stock in the firm. .The firm started operations in Portland Sept. 15, 1958, and plans are to have -branch offices throughout the state. A downtown office is planned in the future, Rucker said. Last rite plans are written in amounts ranging from $300 to $3,000, Kummer said, and are payable either in cash or on a payment plan. The plan covers any last rites expense and at the time of death, the funds are controlled by sur vivors, Kummer noted. PHOENIX CSub Meeting Scheduled By LILLIAN KNIGHT Phoenix The Phoenix Community club wil lhold it's annual meeting in the Fire place room Monday, March 9, at 8 p.m. Members and all Phoenix adults are asked to attend this meeting to discuss plans for the festival: from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Benefits from the dance will be used to buy equipment needed by the department. The Rev. Marvin Lumley of the Nazarene church is in Florence, Ore., for this week and next, holding a series of revival meetings. Details Pending On Spaying Plan Details on a proposed spay ing program for dogs have yet to be worked out, it was re ported at a meeting of the Southern Oregon Humane Society last week. Dr. Douglas Philips, Med ford, and Mrs. W. O. Gibbs, Medford, society, directors, said adequate funds are still needed to start the program. The proposal would be to spay all female puppies in the county which are not intended for breeding. It would be done on a voluntary basis with local veterinarians charging a nomi nal fee. All female puppies taken from the county pound and the Humane Society shelter would be spayed be fore they would be turned over to their new owners, it was suggested. County Com missioner Ralph James told the group that the lethal chamber would be put into operation in the near future at the county dog pound. He also spoke highly of the work being done by the society and approved of the proposed spaying pro gram. Three directors re-elected for two year terms are Mrs. Perry Duncan, Lawrence Clark and Mrs. George Sta cey, all of Medford. Outside of the Himalayas and the Andes, the only moun tain topping 20,000 feet is Mount McKinley in Alaska. The Coast Guard Station at Chelsea, Mass., is the sup ply depot for lighthouses on the Atlantic seaboard- Mrs. Ida Poling left for her home in Billings, Mont., Fri day after visiting with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mitchell.. Nortons' Food market is having an addition built on to the store. Besides enlarging the store, the new expansion will be used for a retail bak ery. This part of the building will be leased by the Hendrix brothers. Dick Hendrix and his wife, Lillian, are from Southern Calif, and Morris and his wife, Agnes, are from Cave Junc tion. Members of the Phoenix fire department are selling tickets for the annual St. Pat rick's day ball to be held at the Community club Satur- Daughter, 15r Held for Assault Hillsboro-fliPD-Louis Joseph Puncochar Jr., 36, N o r t h Plains, underwent surgery for several hours at the Uni versity of Oregon medical school hospital in Portland early yesterday, police said, after his 15-year-old daugh ter pumped five bullets into his side, arms, neck and ab domen. The. girl, identified by po lice as Lou, an eighth grader at North Plains school, was being held in juvenile deten tion on a charge of assault with intent to kill pending further investigation by the Washington county sheriff's office. State Patrolman Wallace Ummel said the man was shot as he emerged from the back door of his home to empty ashes. He was an unemploy ed carpenter. Officers said the girl gave a statement in which she claimed her father had mis treated her on several occasions. The Rev. and Mrs. Kenneth Arnold and their three boys have moved into a home on Cottage st .in Medford. The Rev. Charles Nahss of Eagle Point is temporary pastor at the First Church of Christ. Car Reported Taken Found in California A car reported taken from Dale Franklin Millett, Ash land, Feb. 25 or '26 has been recovered in California, sher iff's deputies said Friday. The car was recovered and a George Michael Andrews is being held by San Diego po lice, deputies reported. An drews is to be extradited, they said. Montgomery re turned home Sunday after a five month's vacation in south ern California visiting rela tives, and in Texas visiting her mother. Her daughter, Mrs. John Miller of Fresno, Calif., and her daughter, Julie, brought Mrs. Montgomery home and will return to their home to day. Charles McCann, News Analyst, Dies New York-(DP&-Charles M. McCann, who served for more than 40 years as corre spondent, editor, and world news analyst with United Press International, died Fri day. He was 66. McCann -had been ill for several months, suffering a complication of diseases. Last Dec. 31 he was made a con sultant on foreign news. Sur viving is his wife, Judith Mc Cann, costume jewelry de signer and manufacturer. They were married in 1940. McCann had written the "Foreign News Commentary" column for the news service, analyzing world news, since 1954.
