county schools, who is organ
izing the group as part of the
leisure time program at the

oil painting, wood carving,

Committee Report
Mrs. S. D. Earhart of the
health committee reported
that 45 men and women have
now joined the Friendly Visit
ing Corps, which held its sec

and are scheduled to visit
them this week. Mrs. Earhart
said more volunteers are
needed from Medford and
Ashland.
The board voted to close
the Activity Center Fridays
except for special meetings
so members may attend soc
ial meetings of the 50 Plus
club which meets each Fri
day at the Episcopal church
Guild hall.
Frank Glonning, chaiman,
recommended the council
work toward larger facilities
so social club activities of the
Center could be centralized.
He suggested a location where
park facilities could be devel
oped for outdoor activities in
summer weather.

The company is devoted to

Last rite plans are written
in amounts ranging from $300
to $3,000, Kummer said, and
are payable either in cash or
on a payment plan. The plan
covers any last rites expense
and at the time of death, the
funds are controlled by sur
vivors, Kummer noted.

On Spaying Plan
Details on a proposed spay
ing program for dogs have yet
to be worked out, it was re
ported at a meeting of the
Southern Oregon Humane
Society last week.
Dr. Douglas Philips, Med
ford, and Mrs. W. O. Gibbs,
Medford, society, directors,
said adequate funds are still
needed to start the program.
The proposal would be to
spay all female puppies in the
county which are not intended
for breeding. It would be done
on a voluntary basis with local
veterinarians charging a nomi
nal fee. All female puppies
taken from the county pound
and the Humane Society
shelter would be spayed be
fore they would be turned
over to their new owners, it
was suggested.
County Com missioner
Ralph James told the group
that the lethal chamber would
be put into operation in the
near future at the county dog
pound. He also spoke highly
of the work being done by
the society and approved of
the proposed spaying pro
gram. Three directors re-elected
for two year terms are Mrs.
Perry Duncan, Lawrence
Clark and Mrs. George Sta
cey, all of Medford.

McCann, who served for
more than 40 years as corre
spondent, editor, and world
news analyst with United
Press International, died Fri
day. He was 66.
McCann -had been ill for
several months, suffering a
complication of diseases. Last
Dec. 31 he was made a con
sultant on foreign news. Sur
viving is his wife, Judith Mc
Cann, costume jewelry de
signer and manufacturer.
They were married in 1940.
McCann had written the
"Foreign News Commentary"
column for the news service,
analyzing world news, since
1954. He won the overseas
press club citation for excel
lence of newspaper commen
tary in 1957.
