Th Mollusk'i Shell Is His Caslle They say a man's castle is his home. Here he is secure. The lowly mollusk, living within the shell of his own creation, is also secure in what suffices for his home. Skillfully and beatuifully is it fastened to meet the physi cal requirements of its owner. The outside may be drab and rough or tinted with bright colors, and as shiny and glossy as a minnow. On its outer surface may be de signs and geometric patterns of intricate lines and a veri table labyrinth of complicated figures and hieroglyphics. Many of the mollusks have the ability to move from place to place, carrying their beau tiful homes with them. There are veritable gaping chasms of unknown secrets, regarding the story of mollus ca. Watkins they suspect exist. They have listed about 22,000 extinct species. The total probably will exceed 150,000. Evidence indicates that shells existed in the Paleozoic Era or beyond. Even in this remote time, some had reached an advanced age of specialization, indicating rath er conclusively that they ap peared on the scene much earlier. About 75 per cent of the known species are univalve, or single shell. The snail, whelk, and conch belong to this group. The remaining 25 per cent are bivalve, the oy ster and clam being repre sentative of these two-shelled varieties. The great number of univalves have no fixed place of abode, but possess the power of limited move ment. They are generally classed in a lower order than the bivalves. Flesh-Eaters A great many of the uni valves are carnivorous or flesh-eaters. They are equip ped with a long tongue or radula containing rows of sharp teeth, capable of cutting a hole in the heavy shell of a clam or oyster. They possess a keen sense of smell and fol low the scent of rrteat for con siderable distances through the water. Their hearing is of a low order, but reacts readily to vibration and outside stimuli. The bivalves have two siphons that draw the water and after the tissue and stomach of the animal digest the suspended food, the water is ejected, and the process goes on. It has been estimated that an oyster will strain 25 gallons of water a day. Along with this food are also the minerals that the mollusk uses to build or add to its home as it grows. 15,000 Feet Down Live shell have been dredged from a depth of 15,- 000 feet: indicating that this phylum of invertebrates have adapted nearly all the ocean bottom as their habi tats. Bivalves have been found that weigh a quarter of a ton and are of the great family of clams. Shells have played an im portant part in the history of human race. They have been used as personal adornment, as money, as utensils and as food for people everywhere. They form a definite part of Mother Nature's great master plan, these mansions of the mollusks. Geraldine J.-I am 24 years old and I'm engaged to a man three years older. Daniel comes from a very educated, cultured family and I feel somewhat lacking in back ground when I come up against them. i I have told Dan that I want him always to be frank and honest with me and to let me know if I am not measuring up to what his family would expect in his wife. I didn't go to college and my parenls never taught me some of the things that are so important in better circles. Ever since I told this to Dan he has been criticizing me so much that I am beginning to wonder whether I will ever be able to measure up. Some times he imitates my manner isms or way of speaking and he can be quite sarcastic. I find myself feeling very hurt and angry and I am beginning to wonder whether I will feel this way after marriage. , Daniel S. I am trying to help Gerry, not hurt her. I realized when I start going with her that the difference in our backgrounds might be come a problem, but I figured it would iron itself out some how. I was very happy when Gerry asked me for criticism because I realized that she has the desire to improve herself. This is quite important be cause I don't want my family looking down on her. Every one in my family is in the professional class. I think it is so important always to be honest and that's why I am seriously upset with Gerry's reaction. It is a num ber one rule of marriage to be absolutely frank with your spouse. I certainly won't be able to hide my feelings when Gerry makes missteps after we are married. Gerry should be happy that she has some one to guide her. , The Council: We don't go along with Daniel's notions at all and we think Geraldine ought to reconsider her situa tion very carefully. Daniel sounds quite pom pous and is filled with too many false notions about mar riage. We don't think there are number one or number two rules for marriage, but if there were we would put con sideration and tenderness to ward one's partner at the top. Sarcasm and constant criti cism are not forms of consid eration and tenderness. Daniel likes to see himself in a good light and therfore covers these forms of cruelty in high sounding terms like honesty. He claims he wishes to "guide" his fiance, but some how the result is a wound to her. Geraldine does not sound like a girl who would be hurt by criticism if hurt were not intended. The fact that she asked to be taught things in dicates that she is mature and eager for growth and change. Dan has taken advantage of her suggestion and given vent to an impulse he probably would have kept hidden until after marriage. The fact that Daniel fears his family will "look down" on Geraldine is a very un favorable element in the whole picture. If he were sure of his own love, he would be convinced that his family would see her lovable traits- provided they are goodwilled individuals and not stupidly snobbish. Daniel really believes he i marrying out of his class and he resents it. We think it likely that Geraldine is too good for him and should leave him to his "class."
