' PENNEY'S STREET FLOOR 4 44 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Thursday, February 19, 1939 7k Oregon State Selected For Geology Program Corvallis - The National Science Foundation has se lected Oregon State college to offer a special two-week summer conference for U. S. college geology teachers, June 15 to 27. OSC was one of 19 schools in the country picked to take part in the experimental pro gram of summer training con ferences for college profes sors. It was the only North west college named under the program and the only, one giving work in geology. A grant of $12,100 has been received by the college from NSF to conduct the program. Dr. W. D. Wilkinson, profes sor of geology, will be confer ence director. The summer conferences were organized by the Na tional Science Foundation this year in the "interests of strengthening teachers' mas tery of the newer develop ments in science and towards increasing their capacity as teachers." 19 Conferences The 19 conferences will be held for periods ranging from one to three weeks so that teachers who have summer teaching assignments on their own campuses may still par ticipate. Thirty geology teachers from colleges across the coun try will be chosen to partici pate in the OSC conference. Each teacher chosen will re ceive a stipend of $180 plus some travel allowance. To qualify, teachers must have had at least three years teach ing experience. The two-week conference will be a concentrated course on "stratigraphy and struc tural development of the Mesozoic period of Pacific Coast geology." Five of the nation's outstanding geolo gists will come to the campus to help with training. They include Siemon Muller, Stan ford university; Ralph Imlay and David Jones, U. S. Geo logical Survey; E. J. Eardley, University of Uath, and H. E. Wheeler, University of Wash ington. Much of the work will be done in the field. A one-day field trip is planned along the Oregon coast and a five day trip in Central Oregon and the Columbia River Gorge to study various geo logical conditions and problems. County Students Join Concert Band Corvallis - Janet A. Carter, Medford, Johanna M. Dobrot, Central Point, and Kay L. Mc Corkle, Eagle Point, have been selected as three of the 60 members of t h e concert band at Oregon State college this year. Miss Carter is a junior in the school of business and technology. Miss McCorkle is a senior in business and tech nology, and lives at star route, box 45, Eagle Point. The concert band is com posed of outstanding student musicians, selected in audi tions before music ' depart ment faculty members. This year, the band will partici pate in the annual campus music concert, Feb. 25, and on April 23 will play for the OSC Centennial concert, ''The Face of Oregon." The concert will feature original music and story on the theme of the Centennial. Some 300 students from the college choruses and band will take part. Coronation is no longer a part of Norway's royal cere monial, but King Olav V who succeeded his father, King Haakon VII last year, will head the rare ceremony of the Blessing at Trondheim's June.
