PHOENIX Pioneer Program Set By LILLIAN KNIGHT Phoenix-A centennial pro gram will take the place of the regular Grange program to be held at the Grange hall Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m., according to Mrs. Berf Stan cliffe, and Dee Hendrickson. The meeting will honor the pioneers of southern Oregon and will be open to the public. Those attending are urged to wear early day clothing and Grange members particularly afe asked to wear pioneer-type costumes. A fashion show will be pre sented by Mrs. Stancliffe, and other entertainment will in clude Vaughn Quackenbush's barbershop quartet and square dancing exhbiitions by Chris Wolf and the "Blacklighters" troupe. A display of historical ar ticles will be arranged by Mrs. Olen Poe. Members and guests are asked to bring their dis plays to the hall by Tuesday afternoon and to attach cards with name and other data to the article. Pioneer type refreshments will be served by Mrs. Mervin Hixson and her refreshment committee. Donald Korth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Korth, un derwent minor surgery Friday at the Rogue Valley hospital. He came home Sunday and will be recuperating a few days before returning to school. He is a senior at Phoe nix High school. Bert Stancliffe underwent major surgery Tuesday at the Rogue Valley Memorial hos pital. He is now home recuper ating and is able to have friends visit him. The centennial theme was carried out at the PTA meet ing Thursday, Feb. 5, at the grade school gymnasium when Mr. C. Lester Wilson's eighth grade pupils gave talks on Oregon history. Jim Webb was master of ceremonies and girls taking part, dressed in early-day costumes, were Pen ny Simmonds, Dorothy James, Linda Sommers, Laura Grif fith, Connie Patterson, and Darlene Coffman. Their speeches were on sub jects of early churches, schools, Indians, the discovery of gold in Oregon, and the early pioneering of Jesse and Lindsey Applegate. Refreshments were served by the fifth grade mothers. The eighth grade was winner of the room count. The seventh and eighth grade basektball girls will play the Ruch girls Tuesday afternoon at 3:05 in the grade school gymnasium. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Furry are on an extended vacation trip which will take them to Visalia, Cailf., where they will visit his brother and sister-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Furry, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Berger. They will go to Bakersf ield, Needles, and will spend some time at Earp where they will go boating and fishing on the Colorado river. From there they will visit at Los Vegas and then go on to Tucson be fore returning home.
