2A MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Sunday, February 1, 1959 Mardi Gras King Named; Three Princesses Chosen Alfred S. V. Carpenter, Old Stage road, Medford, was chosen Rex II of the annual Mardi Gras ball of Tudor guild. The committee an nounced Mr. Carpenter's se lection last week, adding that since he and Mrs. Carpenter are vacationing in Hawaii, he will reign by proxy. Last year's king was Former Coun ty Judge Rodney Keating. The Mardi Gras ball will be held Friday, Fabruary 6, at Rogue Valley Country club. Mr. Carpenter, widely known for his civic and phil anthroDic activities, is chair man of the building fund of the Oregon Shakespearean festival; Tudor guild is one of the festival's supporting groups. In acknowledging his ap pointment, Mr. Carpenter "is sued a royal decree appoint ing one of his loyal subjects to reign, witn iuu puwci i.u authority, during the Dan. Three young princesses will be in attendance on the King. At 10 o'clock one, determinea by chance, will become queen. The royal couple will be crowned in a colorful corona tion ceremony, followed by the unmasking of the revel ers. Competing for queeniy honors will be Mrs. Richard Hawkins, sponsored by the Crater Lions, Miss Carol Lin inger chosen by the Ashland Rotary club, and Mrsv William Patton, the choice of Ashland Kiwanis club. Miss Noreen Kelly was Mardi Gras queen last year. Merrymakers wearing mas querade costumes will vie for Newlywed Pair Now at Home In Louisiana . Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Griess are making their home In Bossier City, La., following their wedding recently in Tex arkana, Ark. Mrs. Griess is the former Miss Kathy Rayburn, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Ray burn, Texarkana. Mr. Griess is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Na than Griess, 321 North Col umbus avenue, Medford. The Rev. C. C. Balser of the Baptist church officiated at the eight o'clock evening cer emony held December 24. The bride wore a light pink dress and her flowers were carnations. Miss Dorothy S. Rayburn, Fort Worth, Texas, was honor attendant for her sister and Miss Sherril Balser was bridesmaid. They wore light blue dresses. Harvey E. Rayburn Jr., brother of the bride, served as best man. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the Bal ser home; 32 relatives and friends attended. It was plan ned by members of the bride's class. " The couple traveled to Hope, Ark., on their wedding trip. For traveling the bride 'wore a gray-suit. The bride attended Genoa Central High school in Texarkana. Mr. Griess attended Medford High school and is serving with the U.S. Air Force. Family Visitors Arrive in City Valley visitors are Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Ferguson, San Mateo, Calif., and their three children, Greg, Bobby and Sue. Mrs. Ferguson is a sis ter of Mrs. Robert M. Hamil ton, 905 Grants street, Med ford. The Fergusons, who will re main here, tor several days, are houseguests of Miss Helen Bullis and Seth Bullis, Flor ence avenue. The visitors are enroute to Bellevue, Wash., where they will make their home and Mr. Ferguson will be employed by Boeing Aircraft corpora tion. A houseguest of the Ham iltons is Mrs. R. J. Conroy, formerly of Medford and now of Sari Francisco. Mrs. Con roy is the mother of Mrs. Hamilton and Mrs. Ferguson. The San Francisco visitor, who arrived in Medford Jan uary 8, will remain here sev eral more weeks before leav ing for Seattle, Wash., where she will participate in the American Contract Bridge League tournament. The gala costume ball, planned for Friday, February 6, at Rogue Valley Country club, is open to the public. , royal favors in the form of prizes For those not wishing to go in costume, formal dress, or cocktail dresses and dark suits, may be worn. Masks for the early evening are mandatory. They may be obtained at the Cash Davis pharmacy in Medford after Tuesday. In Ashland masks are on sale at the Ben Frank- lia and Sprouse Reitz variety stores and the Park View store. Those failing to procure masks in advance may buy them at the door. Tickets for the ball, which will include dancing, enter tainment features and a hunt breakfast, are on sale by Tu dor Guild members. They may also be procured in Med ford at Lawrence's jewelry store and the Jean Hart store, and at the Shakespearean fes tival office in Ashland. Pro ceeds will go to the guild's scholarship fund. Tudor guild contributes many services to the Shakes pearean festival as well as providing board - and - room scholarships to actors, actress es and technicians of the fes tival 'company. Couple Returns After Cruise In Caribbean Mr. and Mrs. Robert K. Norris, 1900 Hillcrest road, re turned recently from a two months cruise in the Carib bean area' v The Norrises and their son, Robert, drove south to Or land, Calif., where they were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Smith, former valley residents. The group then con tinued to Tucson, Ariz, where they left by plane for the Caribbean area stopping in New Orleans, La., Trinidad, Caracas, Venezuela; and Bar bados, West Indies. Enroute to Trinidad engine trouble made it necessary for the plane to land in Havana, Cuba, just prior to the revo lution in that city. The Norris' son and Mr. Smith returned to the United States by plane while Mr. and Mrs. Norris and Mrs. Smith cruised throughout the area and debarked at Los Angeles. They then returned to the val ley by the way of Tucson. Visitors Attend Dinner, Dance Mr. and Mrs. C. Elwood Hedberg, Portland, were en tertained last Saturday even ing at a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Barnes on East Main street. Square dancing followed dinner. During the many years they lived in Medford the Hed bergs were members of a group of 20 friends who have danced at the Barnes home regularly for a period of more than 10 years. Also a guest for the dinner was Mr. Hedberg's mother, Mrs. Sarah Louise Hedberg. The Hedbergs spent the week end in the valley in order to be present for a reception which the family gave Sun day in Ashland in observance of the senior Mrs. Hedberg's 90th birthday anniversary. Medford Lady Elks Plan Party Tuesday Medford Lady Elks will meet Tuesday, February i, at p.m. at the Elks temple party lounge dessert and an afternoon of cards. Hostesses for the meeting are Mrs. Jack Weddle, Mrs. Ira Canfield, Mrs. Victor Moore and Mrs. G. G. Stagg. All wives and widows of Elks are invited to attend. kfy'- i ft rf'rjf I ' Mrs. William M. McAllister, wife of the chief justice of the Oregon Supreme court, was one of six hostesses for a tea given January 28 in honor of Mis. Mark Odom Hatfield, wife of Oregon's new governo.. The McAllisters made their home in Med ford for . many years before moving to Salem after Mr. McAllister's appointment to the court. Also honored at the lea were Mrs. Kenneth O'Connell, wife of the newest justice on the Supreme court; and wives of members of the 50th assembly of the Ore gon legislature. Hostesses in addition to Mrs. McAllister were Mrs. George Ross man, Mrs. Hall S. Lusk, Mrs. Harold Warner, Mrs. William C. Perry arid Mrs. Gordon Sloan. Mrs. Robert B. Korth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Korth, Pioneer road, was recently elected president of Beta Zeta chap ter, Kappa Sigma fraternity at Stanford university. Young Korth was graduated from Phoenix High school in 1956 and is a junior at Stan ford university majoring in political science. Reception Given For Newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Frank White were honored January 21 .at a wedding reception at the home of Mrs. White's grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Darby, Ross lane. The couple were married January 17 in Reno, Nevada. Mrs. White is the former Miss Anne Darby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Darby,. 727 West Jackson street. Mr. White is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hershel White, 851 Palm street. At the reception Mrs. Billie Carter cut and served the tiered wedding cake baked and decorated by Mrs. Fred Phillips, an aunt of the bride. Miss Jean Darby poured the punch. . Aubrey Evans sang. The young couple both at tended Medford High school and are making their home at 119V2 Portland avenue. Kiwanian Dames Install Officers Mrs. Edward P. Barnett was installed president of Kiwanian Dames at a meet ing held Tuesday at the Girls Community club. New offi cers serving with her are Mrs. Ray Wise, vice presi dent; Mrs. C. William Abbott, secretary and tMrs. Glen Branlund, treasurer. Committee chairmen for the coming year are Mrs. Tom G. Polk, hospitality and Mrs. Arthur M. Savard, pub licity. Committee chairmen for the Kiwanis Kapers were also an nounced. They are Mrs. Em erson Anderson, tickets; Mrs. Keva Hutchinson, ushers; Mrs. Boyd Budge, costumes; Mrs. Wise, make-up. . A gift was presented to the retiring president of Kiwan ian Dames, Mrs. Frank Be nesh. ' After the close of the busi ness meeting the members folded bandages for the Amer ican Cancer society under the supervision of Mrs. Ray Fris-bie. Book.
