Thursday, January 29. 1959 fj MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. ORE, j Hatfield Charged ; With Misleading j Campaign Pledge Salem-llPD-Rep. Keith Skel ton (D-Eugene) charged today that Gov. Mark Hatfield had misled the public with pledges of reduced taxes and increas ed services "without inves tigating the feasibility of either." Skelton, co-chairman of the Joint Ways and Mean Com mittee, revealed correspond ence with the State Tax Com mission. Skelton said many new starts involving expenditure of state money were suggest ed by Hatfield in his inau gural address. He said he ask ed the State Finance Depart ment to give him an estimate nf what these programs would cost and was told it I .... t;i WOUld taKe some ume w i.uiu oUt. "Wanted To Allow Tim "Although this answer was itself a confession that when Hatfield made his campaign promises he had no idea of what amount of money was involved," Skelton said, "I waited for some time before making this public. I wanted his departments to have the opportunity to compile fig ures, if the facts were actu ally known. Skelton continued: "It be comes more evident daily that these facts are not known now and they were not known when Hatfield made his prom ise to the people of this state. The Ways and Means Com mittee faces a "great prob lem," Skelton said, because of Hatfield's "vagueness." Hatfield has previously stat ed he intends to come out with a budget program about Feb. 15.
