Servicemen RETURNS TO BASE Dennis Owen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Owen, Jackson ville, returned to the U.S. Na val Training center, San Diego, Calif., this week after spending 10-day leave with his parents. Owen, who entered the U.S. Navy in August and complet ed his indoctrination training in October, will enter the Na val Hospital Corpsman school in San Diego. Mr. Basin was born in West boro, Wis., on May 25, 1901 and was a veteran of World War II. . - JOY PRITT Funeral services were held recently for Mrs. Joy Sim mons Pritt, 25, of Myrtle Creek, in Norman's funeral home at Chillicothe, Mo. Bur ial was in the Coloma ceme tery. Mrs. Pritt was killed Dec. 26 at Carthage, Mo., in an auto accident. She. was born in Dawn, Mo., on Sept. 23, 1935. Mrs. Pritt was married to JameS Forrest Pritt on Sept. 23, 1951. She was a member of the First Christ ian church of Myrtle Creek. JOHN KUFNER Ashland John Kufner, 145 Manzanita st., Ashland, died in his home Sunday. Mr. Kufner had lived in Ashland for 13 years. He was born Juhe 29, 1883. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Anna JameS, AltufaS, Calif., Mrs. Emma Wirth, Klamath Falls and Mrs. Rose Wirth, Ashland; 25 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. MYRA FRAKES Funeral services for Mrs. Myra Grace Frakes, 56, of route 1, Talent, who died Sat urday, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the Lit willer funeral home in Ash land. She came to Oregon about 10 years ago and moved to Talent about a year ago. She was married to Ernest Frakes on Nov. 5, 1943, in Indianapolis. Survivors include her hus band, Ernest and a daughter, Ernestine, both Of Talent; and a brother, Orvill Martin, In dianapolis, Ind. DONNA DAYLE MOORE Donna Dayle Moore, 14-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Moore, of Talent, died Saturday in Portland. Services were held this aft-1 ernoon in Conger-Morris fun eral home. ILLINOIS VALLEY Club Has Holiday Party By RUTH RAUSCH Cave Junction - The Past President's club of the Amer ican Legion auxiliary Glenn Morrison Post 70, held their Christmas party and the re vealing of secret pals in the auxiliary rooms during the holiday season. In charge of the affair and hostess was Mrs. E. V. Copke, junior past president. A general gift exchange, in addtion to the secret pal par ty, was held. Guest for the evening was Mrs. Gilbert Clayton, president of the aux iliary. As guest, Mrs. Clayton drew the names and distribut ed them for the secret pal ob servance for the coming year. Refreshments of Christmas cookies and coffee were served at the table decorated in sprays of Christmas green ery, holly and tree ornaments. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Knight dined at the Oregon inn in Grants Pass New Year's eve and spent the remainder of the evening at the Cavemen bowling alley. On Wednesday, Jan. 14, there will be an installation of officers at the meeting of Marguerite Rebekah lodge in Kerby. Mrs. Lillie White of Kerby had Christmas dinner at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh White of the Illinois Valley Ranger station. Mr. and Mrs. A. Mr. and Mrs. Fran Baden left this week for a ten-day visit to the Los Angeles area, where they will visit friends and relatives. The Roy Ledbetters, former valleyites, spent a day during the holiday season visiting with friends in the valley. They now live in Marysville, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd E. Farm production of the U.S. has increased about one third the past decade by im proved methods but the crop land area remains about the same. The boy was arrested yest Ofday on a charge of "burg lary in a dwelling." In a sign ned statement, he told how he took the rifle frOm the house of Chester Kezer, 1618 North Riverside avenue. He said a companion, also 13, persuaded him to do it. He told how they had gone to the house to inquire if they could take some copper wire they found in nearbv Huffman's junk yard, had en tered and found several guns. He admitted also taking a pack of cigarettes. Since Kezef's house lies in an area outside the city lim its, Medford police turned the case over to a county sheriff's deputy. The boy was released to his parents. Dr. Bodenwsiser New State Veterinarian Salem -(UPD- Appointment of Dr. L. E. Bodenweiser as State Veterinarian was an nounced today by Oregon Ag riculture Director Robert J. Steward, and Frank McKen non, director-designate of the department. The appointment became effective Jan. 1. Dr. Boden weiser had previously been named acting state veterinar ian. Recognition of New Cuba Said Imminent Washington - (UPD United States recognition of the new Cuban government headed by President Manuel Urrutia ap peared imminent today. The State Department re ported that the provisional government, Which came to power in the wake Of Fidel Castro's successful revolution, has telegraphed the depart ment requesting recognition. Washington - (UPD - Presi dent Eisenhower will not hold a news conference this week, the White House said today. The land, with barns, stor age sheds and administration buildings, will be put up for bid soon, with sale funds go ing toward purchase of the station's new site on Hanley rd. , The entire agronomic re search plant of the station is being transferred to the Han ley site, according to Super tendent Harold White. Concrete Bridges Completed on Road Three small concrete bridges on Barnett rd. near the North Phoenix rd. junction ' have been completed by the county roads department. Traffic was permitted on the structures! this week. Three other bridges under construction on the same route are expected to be completed early next month, according to County Engineer Paul Rynning. The six new 12-foot con crete structures replace Old and worn wooden bridges over irrigation canals. Rynning also reported that many of the department's 150 employees are taking their regular vacations this winter. The vacations are in line with the department's policy of encouraging winter leaves so full crews will be on the job during the heaviest work ing months, Rynning said.
