Students in vocational agri culture are now available to taice ana package sou sam ples when requested. The service not only will help the iarmers, out will nelp in structors teach soils to the Fu ture Farmers of America. The FFA chapters will receive $1 per sample by the Northwest Plant Food Council and the Potash Institute for doing the work, Winters said. As in the past, the county agent's office will receive the results and make the recom mendations. Interested persons should contact the vocational agri culture department nearest to his farm. Byrne, former chancellor of the Oregon state system of higher education, contrasted educational procedures and philosophies of foreign coun tries with the United States at the Alumni-Dedication ban quet at Southern Oregon col lege last week end. He spoke in connecton with SOC Homecoming activities. Drv Byrne, long active in the advancement of Southern Oregon college as chancellor, praised the role of Dr. Elmo N. Stevenson, college presi dent, in promoting the physi cal and academic growth of the college. Recently returned from Ne pal where he served on the University of Oregon team of educators which had been in vited to help set up a system of higher education in that country, Dr. Byrne contrasted the educational procedures and philosophies of a number of foreign countries, includ ing those of Nepal, with those in this country. Basic Differences Citing the basic differences between foreign colleges and universities and those of the U.S., he stated that in those countries it was considered sufficient to provide class rooms and teachers and that living quarters and conditions were left up to the students themselves. "Though much derided by educators in lands abroad," Dr. Byrne said, "it is this very function of making suit able living accommodations available in addition to acad emic facilities which provides our students a better atmo sphere for learning." 'The students who helped Hitler rise to power," he pionted out, "are examples of this very indifference. Much of their off-campus time was spent in beer halls and tav-erns-thus giving impetus to the now-famed Beer hall putsch which catapulted the notorious dictator into nation al prominence." Other highlights of the ded ication program included short addresses by Dr. Stev enson; Douglas McKean, who accepted the Commons and the men's dormitory, Siskiyou hall on behalf of the state board of education; Donald E. Two Returned from Rocky Butte Jail Two men from the Rocky Butte county jail were re turned to. Jackson county Wednesday from Portland by sheriff's deputies. The men were Ronald Har ry Morgan, 21, of Portland, who completed a sentence at the jail for a 1956 charge of burglary not in a dwelling. He was returned to appear on a probation violation charge by local officials. Also returned was Lyle Vernon Doty, 20, of Oak st., Medford, who was sentenced to a year in the jail. He was returned here for further ac tion by the court. Three Named lo Fill Vacancies Three directors were named to fill vacancies on the board of the Medford Young Men's Christian association this week. They are Wayne Struble, Dr. Bill Mayer and the Rev. George R. V. Bol ster. They will serve until the next regular election in Jan uary, at which time they will be renominated for three year terms, according to R. L. Jones, secretary of the YMCA.
