Grass Burns - Firemen ex tinguished a one-fourth acre grass fire about 9:55 a.m. to day. They said it started from a trash blaze. , Stores Inspected-City Fire Marshal Truman Nelson in spected three mercantile occu pancies yesterday and issued four orders for correction of hazards. The fire department conducted drills in three pub lic schools and in one office building yesterday. Betty Grable Jack Lemmon Marge Champion Fred R. Norton Dies in Eugene Eugene F r e d R. Norton, 78, who was born in Medford, the son of a pioneer family, died in a nursing home here last Sunday. Funeral services wre held at Murphy Funeral home Wednesday. Burial was in Willamette Memorial park, Albany. A son of John G. and Sarah Sargant Norton, he was em ployed by the Southern Pa cific railroad. Mr. Norton had been living in Junction City for 13 years. He was a member of the Corvallis Moose lodge for 30 years. Mr. Norton's wife, Catherine, preceeded him in death in 1939. Survivors include a daugh ter, Virginia C. Lingo, Junc tion City, and one grason. Obituary FRANKLIN McLAUGHLIN Funeral services for Frank lin H. (Frank) McLaughlin, 84. of Jacksonville, who died Wednesday, will be held Sat urday at 10 a.m. in Conger Morris Funeral home chapel. The Rev. George R. V.. Bols ter of St. Marks Episcopal church will officiate. Com mittal will be in Siskiyou Memorial park. Mr. McLaughlin was born in Wisconsin on May 23, 1874. He had lived in Oregon for the past 55 years. For p short time he owned and operated a laundry in Chiloquin. Survivors include a daugh ter, Mrs. Neal Locker, of Portland, and several nieces and nephews. He was born Nov. 13, 1898, in Traer, Iowa. Mr. Mowery was a barber in his home town prior to moving to Portland in 1926. He married Edith Gray, in Sioux Falls, Iowa, Dec. 15, 1925 and operated the Grand Barber shop in Roseburg for 18 years. He moved to Ash land in 1956 where he pur chased the Modern Barber shop. During World War I he served with the Army in France. Mr. Mowery was a member of the Episcopal church, Vet erans of Foreign Wars, Amer ican Legion, all in Roseburg; the Barber's Union and Elks club in Ashland. He is survived by his widow, Edith, three children, John Mowery, Santa Cruz, Calif., Mrs. Jean Miller, Menlo Park, Calif., Mrs. Helen Herald, Oswego, Calif.; ' one brother, Hugh Mowery of Ne braska, three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Christian, Sioux Falls, S. D.; Mrs. Julia Otterman, Waterloo, Iowa, and Mrs. Marcella Esters, Fayette, Iowa, and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. '13, at Lit willer's Mountain View chapel, Ashland, with the Rev. John M. Thompson III of Trinity Episcopal church of ficiating at 11 a.m. The body will be sent to the Mountain View Crematorium. Industrials Soar To Record Highs New York (UPD - Industrial stocks soared to-a new record high in a four-million share session today. Leadership centered oh steels and metals. Real Silk Hosiery made its first appearance since last June and spurted 11 points to a new high. International Business Ma chines ran up six points and Rohm & Haas at its best was up seven points. Gains in the steels ranged to two points with most of them at new highs. Coppers had gains running to more than three points and alumi nums to more than two. Some of the oils perked up with Texas Co. and Royal Dutch the favorites. Electronics issues, some of the amusements, some tires, chemicals, farm implements, and tobaccos moved ahead to new highs. Autos held in a narrow area. Rails ha'd some soft spots which retarded the prog ress of their average. Utili ties moved into new high ground for 28 years. Eads Loses Permit At Northern Cities Salem -flIPD - Public Utility Commissioner Howard Mor gan today revoked the local cartage authority of Eads Transfer and Storage com pany, Medford, in the cities of Eugene and Springfield. The action was taken after a hearing called for by the Williams Transfer - company of Eugene and other com panies.
