October 10. 1951 Bird Hunting Season Opens on Saturday Portland - (tPD - The up land game bird season gets underway in Oregon at 8 a.m. Saturday and at the same time the water-fowl season opens for a 95-day run. The seasons run through Nov. 16 for upland birds and through Jan. 13 for -waterfowl. The state game commis sion said reports from bio logists throughout the state indicated this year would be one of the best for upland birds for a long time. The waterfowl populations in the Pacific flyway also show a gain from last year. West side hunters were Dickerson Lost to UCLA; Barnes Assumes Duties Los Angeles (DPD Coach George Dickerson, 4o, named to succeed the late Henry (Red) Sanders as head foot ball coach at UCLA, was con fined to the UCLA Medical Center today with no hope of coaching the rest of the year. He was readmitted to the Medical Center Thursday night on the eve of UCLA's game with Florida tonight in the Coliseum. Doctors said he must have "complete rest of not less than three months." A UCLA spokesman said Dickerson was in a state of "complete physical exhaus tion" and would be "lost to the Bruins for the remainder of the football season." First Assistant Billy Barnes was named by UCLA Athletic Director Wilbur Johns to take over Dickerson's .duties as head coach. It was Barnes who assum Raiders, Vikings Vie On Saturday Evening Portland - Portland State's tingy pass defense and South ern Oregon's high-powered passing attack meet head-on Saturday night in an Oregon Collegiate conference football game at Ashland. The two teams carry identi cal won-loss records of 1-2 into the fray and both lost their most recent grid encoun ters. PSC dropped a thrilling 31-21 decision to Oregon Tech last week end, while Southern Oregon was routed 60-13 by powerful Lewis and Clark. The Red Raiders, despite being crushed, managed to complete 25 passes for 267 yards against the Pioneers and displayed a wide-open style of attack that could ex plode at any time. Jack Brown, who complet ed 23 throws against Lewis and Clark, handles the key quarterback job and has fa vorite receivers in Larry Mau rer, Larry Yarnell and Jim McAbee. Portland State will combat SOC's fine aerial game with an airtight pass defense that has allowed a slim 130 yards, only 9 completions in 35 at tempts and that has picked off five errant tosses. Sport Jyi 0SCAR FIULIY Parade Jl SETS Milwaukee-flJPD-The World Series was a story of heroes and hams and, ignoring the unusually large herd of goats, you had to give the halo to "Bullet Bob" Turley today. There have been times in the past when they whispered that the baby-faced fast-baller wasn't the most stout-hearted of competitors. And there was no secret that he was in the Yankee doghouse after blow ing the second game of the classic. But it was Turley whose courage, as well as his crafts manship, carried the New York Yankees back to the championship of the baseball world. And, in so doing, Turley had to make as great a come back as the Yankees first and only other team since the 1925 Pirates to trail three games to one and come back to victory. Wins Fifth Gam "Bullet Bob," who mastered a cunning curve ball this year to become a 21-game winner, was flattened in the second game of the series. He lasted only 25 pitches when he gave the Milwaukee Braves two singles, a double and a walk for four crushing runs. But they hadn't seen the last of Turley. The 26-year-old Canadian has spent all but about one year since 1948 behind prison walls, ac cording to Crown attorney Lloyd Goodwin. He was as sured another five years con finement recently when he was convicted of breaking and entering three businesses in the St. Catherines area. Invasions by Add Spice To College Football Menu By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press International Midwestern invasions by Army and Navy, both of them in the role of underdogs, adds an intersectional spice this Saturday to a college football program that will stress an increase in all-important con ference competition. Army visits Notre Dame in what will be their last meet ing at least for several sea sons, and Notre Dame is a highly controversial one- point favorite. Navy, an untested rebuilt- version of last year's Cotton Bowl champions, visits Michi gan, a team that has been in stalled a five-point pick on the basis of its surprise 12-12 tie with Michigan State last week. The Wolverines played most of "that one without backfield stars Stan Noskin and John Herrnstein and will be much stronger if they're back. The seventh ranked Spartans are 12-point favorites. The majority of big games on Saturday will be confer ence contests and the Big Ten is a typical example with five big games. One of these, in which Ohio State's fifth - ranked Buckeyes who are defending national champions are seven point favorites over Illinois, will be nationally televised. Another big game is on tap in the Southeastern Confer ence where Auburn, the na tion's No. 1 team, puts its 16 game winning streak-longest in the nation-on the line as a seven-point pick over a Ken tucky team anxious for a shot at the league title. Here's how some of Satur day's other games shape up: Intersectionals: Duke, victor over Illinois, a six-point pick over Baylor; host Maryland picked by six over Texas A&M; West Virginia expect ed to rebound by 14 over Boston University; California, Fishing Movie Will Be Shown To Waltonians A one-hour sound color movie, "Cheechako," will be shown Monday, Oct. 11 at the meeting of the Jackson Coun ty chapter of the Izaak Walton league. The meeting is set for 8 p sa. at the Medford Gun club. The film shows the fishing adventures of a greenhorn on his first Alaskan trip. , Final action will be taken at the meeting on resolutions the chapter will sponsor for consideration at the Oregon division convention, Nov. 28 and 29 at Eugene. One of the resolutions refers to the ap plication of Coos-Curry Elec tric Cooperative to build a high dam on the Illinois river. Two others refer to commer cial taking of steelhead in the Columbia river. The motion picture is said to be an especially good one and the public is invited to the meeting. The AAA's book for adult drivers, HOW TO DRIVE, lists these six rules that will help you recover from a skid: 1. Keep yourself under control; don't panic. 2. Don't slam on the brakes; it will only make the the skid worse. 3. Keep the clutch engaged or the selector lever in the "drive"" position. '4. Keep power to the rear wheels. Lifting your foot ' off the accelerator suddenly will decrease trac tion sat the rear end. Some expert drivers even accelerate slightly- to help get out of a skid. 5. Turn into the skid; if the rear end skids to the left, turn the front wheels to the left. As the car begins to straighten, straighten the front wheels. 6. Don't oversteer. Coast Schools Like Pass-Run Extra Pointers New York -(UPD-Major col lege football teams in the Midwest prefer the old kick after touchdown method over the new two-point, conversion rule. Pacific Coast schools, on the other hand, appear to be reaching for the newly-found gridiron ' gold mine and are trying to reap dividends with a pass or run after almost two of every three touch downs. A national survey by the NCAA service bureau reveals that most major colleges agree with the Pacific brand of foot ball. A look-see of the first top 100 games played this sea son shows that more squads went for the controversial two - pointers after scoring than the traditional one-point kick. Results, however, proved there were fewer suc cessful conversion efforts even though more conversion points were recorded. Kane had 203 yards on 39 attempts. He also was tied with Larry Maurer of South ern Oregon in scoring with 18 points on three touchdowns. Jack Brown of Southern Oregon led the passers with 35 out of 57. Brown hit 23 out of 39 against Lewis and Clark last week, for a new NAIA single game record. The old mark was set by Andy Mc Donald of Central Michigan in 1951 when he completed 21. John Willmarth of "Eastern Oregon has averaged 45 8 yards on 7 punts to lead that department. Southern Oregon is first in passing as well as total of fense. The Red Raiders have a 317-yard per game total of fense average and 218 in pass ing. OCE leads in rushing with 177 yards.
