RICHARDS Staff Writer, The Oregonian ' OCHOCO LAKE (Special) I can think of 500,000 reasons why I should stay right here the rest of the summer. Each is tender, juicy, bright as a rainbow and hungry as a three-year-old, mainly on account these are three-year-olds rain bows. The trash fish were all poi soned out of this blue mountain lake last year and 300,000 rain bow trout planted early in the season. Another 200,000 have just been planted. They are small yet, but fishermen tell me they are taking the limit on a single troll of the deep water lake or in a half day's casting with dry flies. Where they find room to troll I don't know. The lake was whipped to cream by a crop of frolicsome water skiers the Sunday afternoon we made its acquaintance on an Oregonian Oregon State Motor Assn. Knowland Gains Ike's Support Washington -UPD- President Eisenhower has offered Sen ate Republican leader William F. Knowland his wishes for success in Knowland's cam paign for governor of Cali fornia. The President said in an ex change of letters published by the White House Monday that the country owed Knowland a debt of gratitude for his "con tribution of good government and for helping maintain peace in the world." Eisenhower added that he was certain that the people of California know Knowland's "admirable qualifications, fine character, and dedication to duty and want to utilize his services as governor of that great state." Although Knowland has dif fered with Eisenhower on some administration policies, the President said the senator was returning to California "to wage a political campaign on behalf of a philosophy of government in which we both believe." The President also ex pressed gratitude for Know land's "tireless efforts" as Senate Republican leader. He said Knowland had demon strated "the characteristics of leadership, of integrity and de votion in the service of the nation." Jeff Williams is on a trip around the world, which started as hitch-hiking trip. Since he's been in the Middle East, hitch hiking became almost impossible, and Williams had had to travel by other means, mostly by train, some by plane.) By JEFF WILLIAMS Saigon: August 5th. I took the plane from Calcutta here, with a day's stop each in Ran goon and Bangkok. It was a good chance to see those cit ies as it is impossible to get a visa to stay there without waiting three months. There are some of the most beautiful temples in the world here, Bhuddist temples, and I spent each of those days gawking and exploring. The plane arrived in Saigon about noon, and they drove me by limousine to the ritziest hotel in town. Very fancy but I knew it was not for me, or at least not for my thinning wal let. So I checked my pack there and took off on foot to tour the town. I inquired at a number of boats at the dock about pas sage to Manila but no luck. I stopped also at the Harbor Police and got a list of ships, sailing dates and destinations. But as it was Saturday, all the agent's offices were closed. Then I walked around some more and spotted a couple of guys who looked like they were from my part of the world and knew Sai gon. I started talking to them, and they were quite friendly. They are here with the Ca nadian Army as part of the U.N. peace team. We all went off together for a swim and then they took me to the 1 V. -m mmM'Mm&A Mi lit. mile lake is Ochoco Lake State Park, nestled in a thick grove of junipers on a promontory that thrusts out conveniently in to the lake. Here 22 camp sites and picnic sites for hundreds lure waterlovers on weekends. There are a couple of gravel beaches and a couple of floats for boaters. Across from the state park is the Crystal Cor ral Trailer court. Ochoco, by the way, is one of the few places where the fish bite and the mosquitoes don't. The water is blue since the trash fish were eliminated, but warm. This whole country is rock hound heaven, too, scene of many a Rockhound Pow Wow, in Saigon "Bird-Watcher's Club." This is a sidewalk cafe where you can sit and take in the local passing scenery. These guys are really funny, enlisted men, and they kid everybody, waiters, girls, and the hun dreds of pestering vendors. We had a good time, and then they took me out to their camp and insisted I stay there. It was sure nice to have a good bed with :lean sheets and good food. Even the beer and soft drinks are all free, and in the center of each table is a large platter of bananas and mangoes. I should be swinging from a tree with all the bananas I put away each day. When I first got here, I was eating two full meals at every sit ting but now I have slowed down a little. With all these other countries fighting and bickering all the time, it is a good feeling to think about Canada and the United States living side by side for so many years in harmony. Great Encouragement These chaps gave me great encouragement about getting a lift on U.S. flights to the states so I went to see the Major in .charge of M.A.T.S. No luck. All he could suggest was that I enlist here, and then I might get stateside duty and they would fly me back there. No dice, too many mights in that deal. I'd rather finish college first. I . went to three different agents and got possible jobs lined up. One of them goes through the Panama Canal, and if I could get paid for that, I would take it and still have time to fly home from New York. The other two land in San Francisco, but I won't know for two days: Meanwhile, I went over to look at the American post. They really have it nice here, with- a beautiful club and a big movie house. They have free movies every night so my Canadian pals and I stayed for the show. Then we had a cheeseburger for a quarter and all the coffee you could drink for a nickle. Everything they had 'to eat there is flown in from the states ex cept the bread, and sold at cost. Yesterday we took a ride out to the beach on the bus. Ninety cents round trip and excellent swimming in the China Sea. They have a nice resort out there with air-conditioned rooms with shower for about $1.50 a night. By the way, I am dressed quite decently again. I broke down and bought a pair of white tennis shoes, a sport shirt and a man gave me a pair of new, very baggy English style sun tans. Prineville, capital of this country, also boasts a sophis ticated Crooked River Roundup each summer, complete with world championship rodeo events, plus Madison Square Garden clowns, buckaroo break fast, semipro baseball, western dances, Indian village, and a fly-in for private aircraft. Prineville is just 148 miles from Portland on Highway 26, one of the main streets of America for visitors to the Centennial next year. Ochoco Lake is six miles east, right on the highway. on Trip dressed friends would laugh at them. But right now they feel mighty fine to me. I still have some money left, but not enough to get all the way across the Pacific, even steerage, so I'll go down tomorrow and see what about that job I hope to get on a ship. Says Goodbye Aug. 9th: Said goodbye and many thanks to my Canadian friends this morning and started checking steamship agents again. At one place I was introduced to a most friendly and interesting man named Mr. Stickles who is head of the Catholic Relief Organization. He knows all the steamship agents quite well and offered to see what he could do for me. In the meantime, he sug gested I share his apartment with him, which was very nice of him and quite a break for me. It has two bedrooms, and is filled with beautiful things he has picked up from time to time in the Orient. His servants prepare our food, and though most of it is quite different, it is good. He told me tonight there is a possi bility of a job on a Norwegian freighter that leaves here Tuesday. One of their seamen got off at Bangkok and if he doesn't return by the time they are ready to sail, I can take his place. If he does make it back, I am shot out of saddle. Two days . to worry about it in, and though I wish the poor guy no harm, I hope very hard that he misses his connections. I had hoped to see Manila, but time is run ning out, and 1 want to get back in time to start the fall term at Oregon! Aug. 13: Hurray! The sea man went mad at Bangkok and they had to keep him there so I get to take his place and will sail at noon today. (Hope this isn't an indication of what I am getting into.) Haven't had a chance to talk to the Captain about what my duties will be, and have no idea but they tell me the food is good. Also, they stop a full week in Manila, several days in Hong Kong and a week in Tokyo. The ship is the Tungus and will arrive in San Frano cisco on Sept. 27. This is the first of two dispatches tell ing what science is doing about it now and expects to do in the fu ture. By LOUIS CASSELS ' UPI Correspondent Washington -UPD- Science is rapidly replacing guesswork in the tricky business of weather forecasting. A long-overdue technologi cal revolution is arming the weatherman with new instru ments that are far superior to the crude tools at his disposal for him to bring you faster, more detailed and more re liable forecasts, especially of serious storms. Ahead lies fully automatic weather forecasting, in which data gathered by hundreds of unmanned robot stations will be fed into a giant electronic brain capable of turning out a fresh weather map every hour. And not too far in the fu ture is the tantalizing pros pest of exerting some human control over the weather. The radical changes taking place in the ancient art of foretelling the weather are demonstrated by an instru ment called the hygrometer, which is used to measure con tent of the air. Built Around Hair For more than 100 years, the standard hygrometer was built around a strand of blonde hair from a woman's head. As every woman knows, hair stretches in damp air. By calibrating the stretch of a given strand of hair, weather men were able to make an ap proximate measurement of humidity. But the hair hy grometer was not a very rug ged or reliable instrument. Today's hygrometer devel oped in the past four years, measures the moisture in the air by determining how much absorption a ray of infra red light sustains in passing from a projector to a photoelectric cell. It is extremely accurate under all conditions, includ ing low temperatures in which hair hygrometers are virtually worthless. Another example is the new Doppler radar equip ment which can "see" a tor nado funnel 70 miles away. The first set was placed in service this year at Wichita Falls, Tex. When a twister bore down on that city April 2, the Doppler radar gave enough advance warning for most residents to find safe shelter. Although 200 build ings were demolished, only one person was killed. With a different kind of radar set, weather stations can detect rain or snow fall ing at any point within an area of 200,000 square miles. They can take time-exposure photographs of the precipita tion blips on the radar screen, measure their intensity with a device called a densio meter" and calculate how much rain fell on a given area. The "instrument" which this technique will replace, when the new equipment is generally available, is a tin bucket with. inch-marks on its side. The trouble with all of these new gadgets is that they cost a lot of money, and the Weather Bureau hasn't been able to buy very many of them so far. But the ad vent of jet-propelled air trav el may change that situation. President Eisenhower's top level Air Coordinating com- Man's Body Recovered From Yamhill River McMinnville. Ore.-(UPD-Re-covery Monday of the body of drowning victim Clifford J. Undseth, 41, from the North Yamhill river seven miles north of here brought the Oregon week end drowning toll to five. Uhdseth drowned Sunday when his fishing boat capsized at the entrance of the river into Carlton lake, according to Yamhill county sheriff's deputies. From their 'vantage point in space, they could transmit to earth invaluable data on cloud for mations and large weather movements in both hemi spheres and from pole to pole. Instead of laboriously recon structing weather maps from a series of "point observa tions" on the ground, meteor ologists could see an actual picture of the world's weath er.
