Post Nasal Drip Thousands of people are needlessly concerned over a dripping of mucus in the back of their throat. Many hawk and spit for an hour every morning, try ing to get all of this stuff out. Some hawk until they vomit. A few hundred times when I have sent these people to a good nose expert he has reported that the person had no sinusitis; there was no pus in his nose, and all that could be seen was a little clear' mucus. I would then say' to the pa tient: "Pay no attention to it; just swallow it; in a few min utes after it reaches your stomach, it will be digested and all gone, just as if it had been a little uncooked white of egg." But usually after we have chatted a while, the cat comes out of the bag, and the person has told me why he was so anxious about his post-nasal drip. To begin with, he was the sort of overly-worrisome person who in sists that his body be always 'just-so.' Perhaps he takes, with each meal, a half-dozen pills of several kinds. The minute the slightest symptom appears, he runs to a doctor. But the reason for his tre mendous fear of the mucus in the back of his throat is his belief that it is poisonous, and that if he swallows it, it will So up and injure his brain. This, of course, is pure fool ishness. - Sometimes when I ask the man to explain fur ther why he fears the mucus so much, he tells me his sis ter went insane, and he thinks this happened because she had a post-nasal drip and swallowed the mucus! Obviously, such a patient needs a psychiatrist not a nose specialist. There will be no let-up in his hawking and spitting until someone takes away from him his great fear of the perfectly harmless mucus. England Wants To Be Kinder Jo Sex Variants For years English courts have been inclined at times to jail sex variants. Then, re cently, came the report of the Wolfenden Committee which recommended legal reforms, with a much kinder and more scientific and realistic attitude toward these unfor tunate people. Curiously, the law practically never bothers women who are sexually pe culiar it is only the men who are jailed. Obviously, there is not much sense to such legal behavior. For awhile, the Wolfden report raised hopes that British law would become more rational and more civilized, but soon these hopes were dimmed by the ODDosition of the many conservative persons who, without any real knowledge of the subject, felt that "sin" could never be condoned. Then, the British Medical association, again apparently without much knowledge of the basic and inborn nature of homosexuality, recommended that a bie rjsychiatric clinic be set up for.the treatment of thp sexual variants. I cannot see how a psychiatrist can do much eood. except by letting these people get things off their chest talking out their difficulties. As a homosexual man said to me the other day. "T have SDent thousands of dollars on psychiatric treat ment but to no purpose. I am the way I was born. I am not sure that I want to be different, and now I am abso lutely certain that I cannot be changed into a heterosex ual nerson anv more than you can be changed into a homo sexual one. I have spent months, also, with endocrin ologists, being shot full of male hormone, but that never changed me in the slightest."
