10B MAIL TRIBUNE, Mlford, Oregon, Sunday, Augutt 17. 1938 i Usi - ted 1 Lu h -4. J z i , , 4 SET TO WASH EASILY and both sweaters dry quickly and never need blocking either. The V-neck slip-on and matching cardigan are in cozy, comfortable "Ban-Lon." Choic of white, light blue, navy, red and beige. Handbags Styled on Clean, Simple Lines Following the chemise and trapeze silhouettes, or extend ing into the long, barrel shape, fall handbags are styled on clean simple lines that emphasize the soft, lux urious look of the new leathers. Decoration, if any, is con fined to almost minute touch es of gold or gilt at the closing. The trapeze and chemise shapes, which are often wafer thin, feature gusseted sides that expand to hold various handbag essentials without bulging out of shape. These are shown in smooth or finely grained leathers for daytime wear, and in smaller versions in silky suedes for after-five. Handles Return Because of the conservative styling, handles are back in the picture bigger than ever. "Wide, over-the-arm straps bal ance the slim, flat handbags and double-strap handbags appear on most of the elon gated styles. Even the envelope bag, shown heretofore without handles, features collapsible handles that disappear into the body of the handbag. The smaller clutch bag, a perennial favorite, turns up for fall in a wide range of new leather colors to match practically any shade. Some' of these have outside pockets held closed by a leather tab and buckle, and others feature a bit of trapunto detailing. . In the general color range, the deep, rich harvest tones are widely featured true reds or those with a slight blue overtone; tartan and olive greens, golden browns, deep browns and basic black arid navy. Papered Ceiling Gives Dramatic Decorating Effect To get a dramatic decorat ing effect, and to create unity between the top and side walls of a room, put wallpa per on the ceiling, suggests the Wallpaper Information Bureau. . Idea for a high-ceilinged dining room is to paper the ceiling with one of the new striped papers, bringing it down the sidewalls about a foot, to resemble a canopy. Paper the sidewalls with a plain or textured paper in a harmonizing color. "Bower" for a teen ager is created by papering ceiling and one sidewall of her room with a floral pattern scat tered bouquets of perky vio lets on a white background, for instance, with embossed white paper for the three re maining sidewalls. Brighten Dark Closet To brighten a dark closet, paper ceiling, walls and floor with a cheery floral, such as cardinal - red roses widely spaced on a bone-white back ground. Lacquer - spray the floor for easy cleaning. For a nursery ceiling, a new wallpaper of clear pink and blue stars on a white back ground can be teamed with sidewall paper in a blue and pink stripe. - When a mural paper is the special feature of a living room, the other walls and ceiL ing can be papered in a plain washable wallpaper to har monize with one of the colors in the mural. A look at the new wall papers will 'suggest many more pretty "papered ceiling" effects. SHAPES OF FALL Trapeze lines ar favored in accessory jackets, while weskits like the chemise line. Fur-print corduroys and mohair-type fabrics are popular for weskits, jackets and stoles. Jf your water heater is too old'.. That sums up the sportswear news. However, any summary can only hint at all there is to see and wear in sportswear this season. From separates to car coats, from knits to leathers, from sweaters to casual dresses, the sportswear fashion news is genuinely ex citing, and the prices are pleasing, too! The excitement begins with mohair and mohair-like wool ens, in looped, spongy tex tures that take readily to color and effectively display such fall favorites as orange, rust, -forest green, purple blues, red and amber. Brown is a well-liked neutral. Setting Pace With mohair setting the pace, color and texture sweep the sportswear field. Basket weave worsteds, jerseys with a printed or dimensional look, alpaca or fur blends, shet lands and Shetland looks, cpen-face tweeds, wide and pin wale corduroys and a di versity of surface-interest fab rics appear in brightly col ored solids, plaids, checks and stripes. Taking shape in these fab- Irics and colors are separates Leathers, Colors Combine for Fall Show Silhouettes New leathers, textures and colors combine to put fall shoe silhouettes in great shape! To point up the elegance of the soft leathers in the new slimmer-than-ever shoes, or namentation often becomes an integral part of the shoe, And when the ornamentation is not "built in," it takes on a conservative touch in tiny off side buckles, small crushed bows, delicate leather appli ques or overlays. Typical of the "built-in" styline are such effects as pleating at the vamp, high peaked tongues of stitched or softly crushed leather, insets, draping, designed-in bows and many versions of slim straps which are shown on pumps and sandals for both daytime and dress wear. Throat Treatments New touches also are seen in various threat treatments some are round, others deeply v'd, others have curving pieces that resemble naii-moons. The lighter look continues, in lightweight leathers for round-the-clock wear, with the slim silhouette highlight ed. For dress there are more open shank treatments, deep V-throats. asymmetrical straps and narrow instep straps. Lin ings of gaily colored leather are often featured. For daytime and casual wear, there's a greater use of contrasting leather colors and textures. Silky brushed leath ers are accented with touches of smooth or finely textured leather at the vamp, in small tailored buckles, collar treat ments and strap details. Oxfords, shown with com binations of leathers and rang ing' from two-eyelet to five eyelet patterns, and spectator pumps are popular, and are often seen with stacked leath er heels. Since designs and ornamen tation are simple, color can go on a binge, and does in rich benedictine and brandy tones, new winter greens that vary from blue-green to olive tones, clear, bright berry reds, deep garnet shades, darkened browns and polished blacks. Correct jewelry rounds out the well dressed man's en semble. This Fall's selections include both medium and small pieces in cuff links and tie bars crafted of silver and gold colored metals. Enamels and colored stones add color and eye-appeal. Designs range from modern to traditional. Youlhfulness Is Seen in Dresses , Youthf ulness, ease and color are the dominant char acteristics of this fall's dresses and costumes, with luxury ex pressed in richly textured fab rics and fur trims. Probably never before has there been a greater variety of silhouettes among them the bubble, the chemise, the trapeze and the still-popular sheath and shirtwaist. Newest looking are styles with high - waisted Empire lines and subtle shaping through, the bustline. Very often, fitted fronts are com bined with backs that flare, billow or curve in a rounded cocoon or sickle line with no waistline demarcation. . Both high and low waist lines are popular. When high, for the new Empire look, they are marked by drawstrings, belts, seams and trimmings placed below the bustline. Very young indeed is the "Flapper" look chemise with long unfitted waist and brief pleated 05 flared skirt, the hipline usually marked by a closely fitted band. Among other new varia tions of the chemise are the balloon, with fullness widen ing to the hem often turned under and the tunic chem ise, which falls straight to the hemline, broken only by a flurry of pleats or flounce a little above the knees. Favored fabrics include worsteds, brushed mohairs, printed sheer wools, velvets and jerseys, textured mate lasses and crepes. Sports stockings appear in harvest hues of russet, orange, cinnamon, moss and emerald greens, bold blues and browns. All help to give a one-color look when coordi nated with sports or leisure fashions. RAYON PLAID One sub teen approach to fall is via the chemise, shown here in rayon plaid topped by organ za bow. By Young Things of Avisco rayon. READY FOR ACTION This teen-ager has plenty of free dom in this springy wool fleece outercoat with quilted lining. The knit cap comes with the coat, striped to match knit collar. It's made to "take it." usually styled to skip the nat ural waistline. Intended for matching are demi-chemse and double trapeze skirts and tops. The demi-chemise often takes the form of a long over blouse that closely follows the figure, with slim and straight or slim and flounced, pleated or low-belted skirt. For the double-trapeze, both skirt and overblouse take a jaunty flare and linings preserve the shape. Leading Silhouettes Separates for mixing, too, have a lithe, young look and easy - going ways. Trapeze, chemise, blouson, Empire, scythe all leading silhouettes of fall fashion can be happily achieved by combining sweat ers, shirts, skirts, jerkins and jumpers. Jumpers are especially news-worthy, making a fash ion comeback in 'both chem ise and trapeze styles. One favored combination is the plaid trapeze Jumper with hooded' jersey blouse. Sweaters, bulkier than ever and are very new looking in elongated easy shapes. Shirts and blouses follow every line from the short and bloused to the long and relaxed, and are most often worn outside chemise-look skirts.
