14 MAIL TRIBUNE, MeoW, Oregon, Prldey, August T. 1958 Condemnation Actions Declared Costly to Oregon Salem (CPS Condemnation actions have cost the state some $183,000 in the past three years, Highway Com mission Chief Counsel L. The commission deferred action on 133 pending prop erty condemnation actions un til later in their two-day ses sion here. Lindas said about half the actions probably would be settled out of court. The commission granted Lindas authority to split with Idaho $36,042 forfeited by Hoffman Construction Com pany, Portland, which refused to accept award of a contract to construct the Ontario bridges over the Snake river in Malheur county. Rights-of-way agents of the Highway Department would be prohibited from taking out side employment that might Interfere with their state du ties, under terms of a resolu tion adopted by the commis sion; The commission said the resolution was necessary to avoid conflicts of interests. Lindas and State Highway Engineer W. C. Williams said they would make a further study of other conflicts of in terest that might involve Highway Department em- ployees. Engineers are already pro hibited from taking outside jobs. The commission gave pre liminary approval to improve ments of the Oregon-Washington highway in the Milton Freewater area because of ex cessive truck traffic during the nea harvest. They turned down a Hilte boro delegation which had sought a connecting road with the Sunset Highway other than the county road now used. Lack of funds was the reason. 1,400-Mile Course Mapped for Cars Portland Mileage achieve ments of small, foreign make cars, will be established over a 1,400 mile course through Oregon, the run finishing on the State Fair grounds Aug. 29, Sig King, of the Oregon State Motor association, who is logging the proposed course in the official AAA travel car, has announced.
