Stringent measures . were taken by the king when it was learned that a coup d'etat was in preparation at the time British paratroopers flew into Jordan from Cyprus at Hus sein's request. Highly author- iative sources said the coup was timed for the day the paratroopers arrived, July 17, and that the British landing nipped the revolt in the bud. Normadic Bedouins, known for their loyalty to the king, have taken over almost en tirely the task of maintain ing security in the Amman area. The country's only arm ored brigade is manned and led by Bedouins. Uncle in Command Hussein's uncle, Lt. Col. Sherif Nasser, is in command of the Amman forces. There are reliable but of ficially unconfirmed reports that Hussein has begun arm ing the Bedouin tribes whose black tents cover the hillsides around Amman. It is believed the Bedouins, who hold town-dwelling Arabs in contempt, would sweep down on the towns in massed vengeance raids if Hussein's opposition moved against him. DR. C. G. VAN VALZAH Dentist Dies Unexpectedly Local Dentist Dies at Resort; Services Tuesday Dr. C. G. Van Valzah. 58. of 15 Geneva st., died July 27 at Diamond lake. Funeral services will be held . Tues day, July 29, at 10 a.m. at Conger-Morris Funeral home with the Rev. D. Kirkland West of First Presbyterian church officiating. Dr. Van Valzah was born Nov. 28, 1899, in Springfield, Ore. He was graduated from SDringfield High school, at tended the University of Ore gon and is graduate of the former North Pacific Dental college. He first practiced m Union, nrior to moving to Portland. From there he lived in Rose- burg from 1931 until 1942 when he moved to Medford. He was a life member of Laurel lodge AF and AM, Roseburg, a member of the Royal Arch Masons and of Ascalon commandery, KT, Roseburg: and also members of the Table Rock council R and RM, Medford, Hillah tem ple AAONMS, Ashland, and the Jackson County Slhrine rlub. He was a member of First Presbyterian church and American Legion, Med fard His memberships included the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the American Dental association, and the Southern Oregon Dental societv. He was married Jan. 1, 1931. in Springfield to Anne I. Gorrie, who survives. Other survivors include three daugh ters, Mrs. Robert L. Nelson, Corvallis, and Jannon and Nancy. Medford. Masonic committal services will be held at Resthaven cemetery at Eugene Wednes day at 11 a.m. Sam Hayes, Veteran Newscaster, Dies San iDego &?D Veteran newsman Sam Hayes, 54, died of a heart attack today as he was preparing his first news cast of the day here for radio station KSDO., Hayes, the original Rich field reporter of western radio fame, joined the San Diego station in recent months. He had been in the news business for 30 years, both as a com mentator and a sports broad caster. Hayes was noted for his fast-talking delivery He is 'survived by his wid ow, Lorraine, and two chil dren. In 1758, Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish biologist, who classified all living things known to him, published a catalogue of 4,236 species. Since Linnaeus' day the to tal has grown to something over a million. New species are being added at the rate of about 10,000 per year, and some biologists believe there may be up to five million. (UPI) A course being offered at Southern Illinois University is designed to prepare prospec tive fathers for arrival of the stork. "One thing is certain," said Mary Wyatt, assistant Drofes- sor of nursing, "when babies or sickness arrive at their homes, the men who complete this course won't be helpless hand-wringers." The course is caller "Survey for Men." "We're not trying to tie aprons on husbands, but now adays, more than ever before, the man of the house shares baby tending duties with the wife," Miss Wyatt said. "And when the wife is ill. ifs up to him to care for her and the children. We feel he should be prepared."
