Stringent measures . were
taken by the king when it
was learned that a coup d'etat
was in preparation at the time
British paratroopers flew into
Jordan from Cyprus at Hus
sein's request. Highly author-
iative sources said the coup
was timed for the day the
paratroopers arrived, July 17,
and that the British landing
nipped the revolt in the bud.
Normadic Bedouins, known
for their loyalty to the king,
have taken over almost en
tirely the task of maintain
ing security in the Amman
area. The country's only arm
ored brigade is manned and
led by Bedouins.
Uncle in Command
Hussein's uncle, Lt. Col.
Sherif Nasser, is in command
of the Amman forces.
There are reliable but of
ficially unconfirmed reports
that Hussein has begun arm
ing the Bedouin tribes whose
black tents cover the hillsides
around Amman.
It is believed the Bedouins,
who hold town-dwelling Arabs
in contempt, would sweep
down on the towns in massed
vengeance raids if Hussein's
opposition moved against him.

Scientists Unsure
Of Animal Numbers
Chicago (UPD If someone
should ask you how many ani
mals there are don't feel em
barrassed if you can't answer.
Even scientists who specialize
in animals are unsure.
Counting put the single cell
and subcellular organisms
which live in the fringe area
between animal and plant, bi
ologists still have no answer,
according to the Chicago Na
tural History Museum.
In 1758, Carolus Linnaeus,
the Swedish biologist, who
classified all living things
known to him, published a
catalogue of 4,236 species.
Since Linnaeus' day the to
tal has grown to something
over a million. New species
are being added at the rate of
about 10,000 per year, and
some biologists believe there
may be up to five million.
If you are pressed for an
answer suggest, as the scien
tists do, that the person come
back in 200 years when it is
predicted that the job of sort
